Donated to the National Trust for Scotland, this is a fine example of a well-to-do Georgian's townhouse. Fitted out as it was, you get a real feel for life here, even then a superb location in which to live. And right next door - also NTS owned but not open to the public (might be open to you, of course!!)... More

This most beautiful house was brought to life for us by interactive re-enactments of family life in each room that thoroughly enhanced our visit. Telling the story of John Lamont on New Years Eve, actors moved about through the rooms and we, as guests, followed them and watched. It was absolutely exquisite and we were so touched at the effort... More

I have been to the Georgian House twice. It is an excellent place to visit. It has been restored very well and the films and staff compliment everything amazingly. The volunteers in each room are super helpful and have many good stories to tell, so make sure you listen into them! Will be so exciting when the top floor nursery/schoolroom... More

We really enjoyed our visit here. Arrived just before the doors opened. The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. The self guided tour starts on the 2nd floor with an interesting film. There are several interactive displays up here which are very good for children so they can use up energy and touch and play before going downstairs. All the... More

We were in new town and decided to check out the Georgian House. The house has been restored to show a typical New Town House in the late 18th century. I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. It was very interesting and we learned about the life of a upper class household at the time. There was a volunteer stationed... More

This is a little hokey but give a wonderful peak at Georgian culture. It would be fun for kiddos too, with costumes to try on and very kind volunteer guides

Visited the Georgian house today to find that this weekend and next , they had living history actors. The tour was free and took over an hour and included us taking part in the Polonaise, a fashionable dance in 1815, the date of the enactment. Would strongly advise going next weekend and joining in the fun.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
