Our last day in town and we decided to check out this 19th century Georgian House. What a great surprise destination. A short film gave us insight into life in the early 1800's in Scottish society. We had a chance to see all teh rooms, the kitchen, servant's quarters, dining room, etc. A lot of fun to see how they... More

This was a fantastic georgian house, which is well laid out and extremely friendly and informative guides who are very quick to engage and talk about the items and rooms in the house. It's well priced at around £7 entry but if you have national trust membership it's free. The house is another gem that allows you to build the... More

It has been many years since my first visit to the Georgian House. It is a real treat to see how the House has been expanded into parts of the house as those parts become available. The room guides are knowledge and helpful without being intrusive. The history of this New Town home is fascinating and well conveyed. The next... More

Very interesting to see how gentry lived when the new town was first built. Lots of info to read, room guides very knowledgable. Impressed that the house has only had about 5 owners since it was built. Rooms set up as they would have been regarding furniture, carpets etc. You can really imagine how life would have been for the... More

New Town is the area of the rich, therefore the Georgian houses that you see there, are simply fantastic and impressive.

If you are an NT member it's free, great news. Well worth the visit, with lots of information and interaction. Quite a few stairs though, which you would expect, but be prepared.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
