Very interesting to see how gentry lived when the new town was first built. Lots of info to read, room guides very knowledgable. Impressed that the house has only had about 5 owners since it was built. Rooms set up as they would have been regarding furniture, carpets etc. You can really imagine how life would have been for the... More

A charming house museum which gives visitors an idea of what life was like for New Town residents in the Georgian Era. Beautiful interiors, informative guides. Don't miss!

New Town is the area of the rich, therefore the Georgian houses that you see there, are simply fantastic and impressive.

If you are an NT member it's free, great news. Well worth the visit, with lots of information and interaction. Quite a few stairs though, which you would expect, but be prepared.

We was lucky to view this National Trust house as a free attraction last weekend whilst we was at the Edinburgh Christmas Market, the house is original and in keeping with the Georgian period, staff are friendly and knowledgeable and we all learnt something new. There is an area for children to dress up in period costume. Please note there... More

We visited the Georgian House on the 26th November and left the place beaming. This was not a planned trip but we are super glad we went in as we were greeted with live actors that took us on a tour of the house and it was as if we had stepped back in time. The actors were very informative... More

Donated to the National Trust for Scotland, this is a fine example of a well-to-do Georgian's townhouse. Fitted out as it was, you get a real feel for life here, even then a superb location in which to live. And right next door - also NTS owned but not open to the public (might be open to you, of course!!)... More

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
