Neighbourhood: Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.

Open space in the heart of the city
Nov 2020 • Solo
Pedestrian and cycle lanes snaked around the park, with open grass areas for sports and relaxing. Tennis courts and a large play park closer to the Newington side. Exercise equipment scattered throughout the park. Tree-lined paths are beautiful in the spring and summer when the blossoms appear. Popular space for outside gatherings such as BBQs and sports events.

Relaxing On A Sunny Day
Aug 2020
The Meadows in Edinburgh is a great area to relax and watch the world go past. We enjoy sitting on one of the benches, with the newspaper and maybe a take away coffee. Perhaps there will be live music, often of high quality and it is the ideal way to while away a couple of hours in the sunshine. No Festival this year, but several artworks to enjoy as seen in the images. Free entertainment.

My Miniature Poodle and I stayed for a week at a nearby hotel. This was a great place to walk her, a huge expanse of grass and trees.

Good place for morning walk
Oct 2019 • Solo
It's basically in a residential neighborhood and visited by locals for morning and evening walks. Great place to be there just too wind down with a coffee. Nice views of the Meadows and the adjoining park. Not a compulsory visit but do try if possible.

A big ol’ park

The meadows is a pretty great location if you’re looking for a bit of nature amidst the urban sprawl. There’s plenty of space to host all sorts of physical and relaxation activities. Head down for a game of footy or to read a book on a blanket!

Nice park
Sep 2018
The Meadows is a nice open park with lots of grass. There are some trees, mainly along pathways. There is plenty of space to do whatever you want more or less. Children will probably love it, as they can run around to their heart's content. Apart from that, you can play games. If you are planning to set aside time visiting this park, don't, unless you know what to expect. Try something else instead.

A nice place to relax on the grass
Aug 2019
A place, where people come to grill, picnic or walk their dogs. Visit it if you want to escape the overcrowded center for a while and enjoy a sunny day on the green lawn.

Lovely park
Jul 2019 • Friends
Quite a massive park in city centre. Walking and biking trails. Benches, and barbeque areas. It doesn't seem very nicely landscaped but it offers wide open green space with hill background.
