Popped in for a quick light lunch - the menu generally consists of toasties and soup - I had a toastie. It was fine - nothing special but nothing wrong with it! Tiny little place, quite a few tourists in there but it had a nice atmosphere and an open fire. I wouldn't necessarily go there again, but it's a... More

Just off the royal mile and near to Edinburgh castle is this nice little pub. It has a decent selection of ales and a very large selection of gin and whiskey, so should suit anyone wanting a traditional type of drink/break. We didn't eat here but as a 'stop for a drink' kind of place we were very happy. The... More

We found the Jolly Judge down a small alley and were very happy we did. While all the pubs on the Royal Mile were very busy with people, although busy we were able to get seat and order our drinks and food very quickly. There is a good range of beer and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. We... More

As always, we had a great time at the Jolly Judge. Barstaff, David and Tim were super nice and go above and beyond. For anyone looking for a few drinks right off the Royal Mile, it's the ideal spot. Looking forward to next time!

Cannot rate this pub highly enough. Second trip to Edinburgh within a year and spent each evening in the jolly judge. Love the atmosphere and vibe of this pub, it's small in size and very cosy with their open fire. The staff were friendly and helpful as ever, especially David. They've a nice selection in both whiskey and draught options.... More

We visited the Jolly Judge Pub on a cold winter's night. It was very much 'the real deal'. Small, partially underground, an open fire and a very relaxed friendly atmosphere. There was even a Scot in his traditional tartan enjoying a pint.

Saw the pub on a sightseeing tour of the Royal Mile and the guide actually recommended it so I stole back later in the day for a quick half hour. The pub is tiny but had a good range of ales and ciders and a pretty large whiskey range including most of the favourites. It has free wi-fi and a... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
