The area
Address
Neighbourhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

Christmas meal pre booked couples night.
The setting was beautiful and very Christmassy. We had pre booked this as a treat for us both we had driven down from the Highlands to spend time in Edinburgh and this was on our list. When we arrived there were quite a few tables that were free we got placed on the left hand side by a waiter area it was right by the wall and very cramped the table next to us had to keep moving there chairs just so as to not hit our table and the same was said for us. We were like wedged in. The waiter was a very young lad he was very polite but appeared to be his first night there as we had to keep asking if we wanted another drink as far as I am aware you would ask your customer if they wanted another drink when their glass had been empty for about 15mins (that's what I would do in fact before they had finished I would ask does this not generate more business?) The food was beautiful and a good size portion we had chosen to have the Christmas dinner which we cannot fault. We would love to come back but were disappointed with where we were placed and in the service (although I appreciate that everyone has to learn but these are the basics) but would give it another try.

    Nice....... BUT !!
Lovely set up, great food, Pot of Tea ????? Let the show down I'm afraid being an afternoon tea I'd of expected a clean pot being used. Unfortunately there seemed to be a lack of loose tea leaves in the pot, but they were also accompanied with debris which I found whilst stirring the pot to encourage a colour of water that resembled tea and not just hot water, sorry but hygiene should be a priority even if hidden in a teapot, an extra plate for sandwiches and scones would also of been nice.

My friend and I ate in a few restaurants while the Eat On scheme was on. The very last day August 31st we had lunch in The Dome. All I can say is it was the best we had eaten in all the restaurants in August. We had the three course, with Prawn Cocktail, Fish and Chips and Chocolate Fudge Cake and all of the food was presented well and tasted delicious ! Our bill came to £90 (including a bottle of wine) and we received £20 off ! The staff were very hospitable and treated you very special.
We will certainly be back.

A very special setting for dinner. Our meal was very enjoyable although there were a few small niggles which prevent me from giving a top rating. Notable was the haggis samosa which was poorly presented with the samosa broken open on top and hard below. The haggis part was fine so why not just serve that?

Service was excellent with plenty of hard working staff ensuring we were never kept waiting but were also given enough time between courses and to hang around waiting for our sleeper train to London.

All in all this was a very good meal and justified it's high price but I felt it just lacked that little something that would have made it excellent.

The decorations here absolutely take your breath away, there really isn’t anything like it.

The food was also lovely as was the welcome. Unfortunately however, our server seemed less than interested in serving us and this let the experience down somewhat.

Something else to note is that when our coats were taken, they were obviously stacked rather than hung as when they were returned to us, they were wet on the inside which was not pleasant.

I would give the restaurant another chance as hopefully it was just a one off on the service and everything else was very good.

I booked a table atThe Dome for 4-00pm for an early dinner before travelling home after a day out in Edinburgh.. As I arrived I noticed a large que had formed but quickly realised this was for the bar only.. No such waiting for the restaurant though (I wonder why) any way I was taken to a table which was in a good location and wondered at the great Christmas decorations etc; I ordered from the festive menu which was around £50.00 for two courses but decided to pay an extra £25.00 for a fillet steak with peppercorn sauce. All good so far until the food arrived, for a starter I ordered a smoked salmon roulade which was tasty but you could have placed the three pieces of roulade on three ritz crackers with some coulis. The real eye opener arrived with my main course as the fillet steak can only be described as the tail end and the pepper corn source lacked cream and brandy (more like a packet sauce). I also asked for extra vegetables (£5-00) and when they arrived in a ramekin there was only carrots and cubed potatoes which looked like they had come from a frozen pack. I did ask if a jacket potato could be served with my steak but this request was refused. I was so disappointed I decided not to order a desert or coffee etc; and asked for my bill over £90-00 in total which included one large glass of wine.... I can only say the venue looked great and the service very acceptable but the dinner I received fell well short of the quality I was expecting. My review is only my feelings as I would not normally give a poor review only when I have enjoyed a meal in a restaurant would I compliment but I am making an exception this time. 3/10...

Very average Afternoon Tea. Uninspiring, dull sandwiches. The scones were huge and slightly dry/tasteless (and weirdly a bit ‘wet’ inside - I wondered if they had been microwaved). Smaller scones would have been more refined. The worst part was the cakes - a series of wet, cheesecake style traybakes which were sickly, bland and all tasted quite similar. No cream cakes or elegant patisserie.
It wasn’t horrible, it just wasn’t great. There are fare better places to go in Edinburgh.
The room was also packed with the maximum amount of tables they could squeeze in - it felt a bit overcrowded (like a posh Macdonalds!)
The staff were very pleasant to be fair.

Visited a month ago for dinner. Service was appalling and food wasn’t much better. I spoke to the chap who appeared to be the restaurant manager and he was incredibly sarcastic when I told him my starter was barely lukewarm ! I’m wondering if this is the chap re other reviews ! We used to love The Dome but sadly it’s gone downhill since reopening

Whenever we visited the Edinburgh Christmas markets this was a go to bar for a couple of cocktails , this year we were in a queue for half an hour & was taken into a side bar for drinks, apparently you can’t go into the main bar anymore unless you have booked a table. We had friends with us who hadn’t been before & the idea was to have a couple of drinks & to see the beautiful decorations & tree.
Very disappointing that there was nothing to say you couldn’t go into the main bar especially after we had queued for so long in the pouring rain

Very disappointed with our experience here for breakfast. Took three times to get the correct menu that I had to physically go and ask for each time and when we asked about what was included on one of the items the waitress shook her head and said she was pulled into the room to work and didn’t know (but didn’t offer to find out?!). I was served Luke warm tea. My breakfast for £9 was one slice of French toast and was half burnt. There was no warm friendly check ins to ask how we were doing or if we needed anything further. When we were settling the bill we asked for the tip to be removed and we weren’t asked why or apologies for service or any discussion on it which left us with further disappointment and in no rush for come back!

The setting is impressive, the service attentive and the cooking excellent. So why only 4 stars. Only because the lunch offer on our visit had no gluten free option on the menu. I don't blame The Dome as managing to keep everyone happy cannot be easy but anyone thinking of dining might care to phone ahead.

The filo haggis parcel and sauce was full of flavour as was the goat's cheese salad. The neaps and tatties again excellent and very tasty but the mushroom and asparagus risotto could have been lifted by a touch of lemon. Only a minor quibble.

Our server was especially patient and keen to seek any GF dishes available and check whether what was available was 'safe'.

Our return will be for dinner.
