The visit to Gilmerton Cove was the best thing I did in Edinburgh. The origins and purpose of the underground chambers and passages are conjecture, mainly due to lack of funding for a comprehensive investigation. They could be a couple of thousand years old. Some...More

If you are in Edinburgh, book a tour for Gilmerton Cove. A hidden (who knew what was behind that old cottage door) gem in the southern outskirts of the city. We booked just a couple of days ahead by email and it was no problem...More

This place is a must-see when in Edinburgh - although the journey to it can be a bit long from some hotels, it is relatively straightforward and the tour guides are very amenable to booked guests. If you don't get an answer on the telephone,...More

Gilmerton Cove is a very little known historical site on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The tour needs to be pre-booked which is easy enough via the site's website and is well worth the pennies. The Cove has a very mysterious history and work is underway...More

It was a fascinating and totally unique experience and our guide Margaret-Anne was the best: extremely knowledgeable and friendly in explaining the various theories about it's origins and possible usages throughout the centuries. Loved...More

This place takes a bit of finding. Well down Drum Street there is an unassuming whitewashed cottage with a notice in the window. It is clear that nobody knows the truth of the subterranean oddity and the 'history is little more than anecdotal rumour. It...More

I would say around 20 steps. Once in the cave it is flat but the ground is a bit uneven.

Not at all. It is small with low ceilings (not an issue for the wee ones 😁) but not done as a "scary" tour
