Great tour from Mel, good 5 story depth of knowledge about the mean dark streets of Edinburgh. Made for a good day out. #PengestHistory.

Good tour, good history, good day. Mel was a great tour guide and the jokes were cheesy but top class. Thanks for a great time!

We wanted to experience what Edinburgh was really like during medieval times and this tour did just that. It gives an overview of what day to day life was like for the inhabitants of Mary King's Close. Very informative!

We liked the close, but didnt actually get to see too much of it. We were given a good guided tour around and shown various rooms with some history behind each. I personally believed we'd get to roam around some of it, obviously supervised, but this was't the case. While it was good, it wasn't absolutely amazing for us anyways,... More

Felt a bit expensive but I learned a lot about social history of Edinburgh's historical centre. The guide was amazing and so entertaining! It's great learning more about everyday people and their woes rather than royalty for a change.

I cannot understand how this place is so busy and so many 5 star ratings - it wasn't scary, it wasn't funny, it wasn't informative, it wasn't interesting, it wasn't entertaining - it was just a mediocre and bland waste of 15 quid. The rooms are empty of props or actors which to me just seems cheap and lots of... More

We went on Sunday the 19th and in my opinion it didn't live up to the hype, most of the rooms look like old pub cellars and it's not until you get to the end of the tour that you get to see the full close, almost as it was, which is amazing! Then they take pictures which you can... More

We are sorry to hear that you were very disappointed by your visit. The one hour fully guided tour takes guests through streets and houses that have been uniquely preserved beneath the City Chambers and our character guides tell stories of Mary King's Close covering over five hundred years of history. While some props and mannequins are used over the... More

Visited here during February half term with children aged 8,10,12 & 13. Thought there would be more interaction with actors bringing the theatre of this 'underground way of life from 1650's' to life. If you have no imagination, you may struggle to see the point of this. We had quite a 'dry' guide, and I guess this can make a... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
