Hidden beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh’s deepest secret: a warren of hidden ‘closes’ where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have lain forgotten and abandoned…until now. Visit Edinburgh's most famous Close, which makes Edinburgh's Hidden History unmissable.

Great tour underground just of the Royal Mile. Amazing to think people lived there although it was open to the air then, Daniel was our very entertaining and knowledgeable guide - not the cheapest tour but worth it Not good if you are unsteady on your feet as there are lots of stairs and uneven surfaces Booking beforehand is recommended

This was a really excellent tour of some "old world" Edinburgh. Our tour guide (Pam), dressed in period costume, gave our group a real insight into life in Edinburgh several centuries ago.

The whole experience was a fascinating and eye-opening one. Chris T was an excellent guide who got the whole audience involved, including my six year old. Thoroughly enjoyed this educational walk through an old scottish street and insight into how they lived in the past!

It was an evening visit at around 7pm. Since it all takes place underground then it's ideal for evenings or bad weather days. The tour guide (a young man in his early twenties) was brilliant, he conveyed the history in a meaningful and humorous way. The history and location is indubitably fascinating. My feelings are as follows: the audio visual... More

Chris T made Stephen Boyd come to life. Interesting and humorous adaptation of the lives of people living here 400 years ago.

Our guide Chris T was knowledgeable and amusing on our hour long tour beneath the old town. Well worth a visit.

Done few tours in Edinburgh now and this is by far my favourite to date. Tour guide - Loyd was brilliant. He not only knew his stuff but was also interesting and entertaining. Would defiantly recommend this to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

This is such a hidden gem, really interesting, informative and enjoyable. We had a wonderful Spanish tour guide take us around, who really brought the experience to life. Much better than the Castle!

This was somewhere that I'd known about for years, but have never visited before and I really wasn't disappointed when I did! The staff were really friendly and having bought my ticket, was told what time to go back for my tour. Once inside, we were introduced to our actor guide who (I wish I could remember his name), but... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
