Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

- Michael V1 contributionYour great drink poorThe tour was great and the guide Caroline was very informative. However we decided to have a coffee with a wee dram in it while we were waiting for our tour to begin (15 minutes). We had to ask if it was coming as the tour was now being called and then it arrived in takeaway cups it was cold??Hello, Thank you for sharing your review with us. I would like to start by saying we are delighted that you enjoyed the tour of the close, in regards to the coffee I can only sincerely apologise for this and will pass this on to be reviewed, we appreciate your feedback. - Max E1 contributionMatt the GOATIt was incredible, Matt guided us through the eary underground streets with perfection. He was a very well spoken guide, with immense historical knowledge. To top it off the harmonica playing was surprising yet pleasurable. P.S his laugh is top notch (hidey hidey hidey hidey)🤪Hello Max, Thank you for your kind review. - Rachel D4 contributionsNice tourStaff were lovely and full of knowledge. It was very interesting to see the actual place and what it was like. I do think it was a little overpriced and only lasted an hour or so..then you get your photo taken and its another ten quid. I appreciate theyre abit limited with what they can do down there and let you see but then i think the ticket price should come down abit because of that. Lovely gift shop and lovely staff.Hello, Thank you for sharing your review with us. We are delighted to hear you found the staff pleasant and helpful, I will be sure to pass this on to the team. we appreciate your feedback regarding the price. Thank you for visiting! - Adele P11 contributionsGood ExperienceOur guide Zelda was great, she seemed knowledgeable and stayed in character throughout the experience. I found it quite hard to get my head around the lay out of the close if that makes sense, I expected a long street with various houses and so on on each side, however it felt like we were in cellars more than anything, which all lead onto each other and it was a bit confusing. When we did go out on to the actual close, it was cool to see, and was more of what I was expecting! Sadly a couple of the points of interest including the Chesney House were out of bounds due to the condition of them, however we could peek through the door. I did expect more given the price of the tour, however it was still enjoyable and very interesting.Hello, Thank you for sharing your review with us, I will be sure to pass on your kind comments to Zelda, we apologise the tour was not quite what you expected, we are glad however that you enjoyed learning about the history of the residents. - Crazy_Jim_83London, United Kingdom1,161 contributionsActed tourThe tour is acted by someone playing the part of a 17th century local. Adds some colour to what would otherwise be a slightly pointless walk around some subterranean rooms. Not much has been preserved of note but there’s a few interesting tales. Wanted to enjoy this but in the end just felt a bit flat. £19 for a ticket. It’s ok I suppose.Hello, Thank you for sharing your review with us and we are sorry to hear it did not meet your expectation. Thank you for visiting! - DrMMeshaalEdinburgh, United Kingdom32 contributionsEnjoyable interesting placeWe highly enjoyed the tour and the historical background of this interesting hidden place. Our tour guide, Daisy, did a great job as she brought life to the stories, fun to the tour and was lively throughout. The whole staff were so nice and helpful. There are a couple of things in my opinion led to 4 rather than 5 stars rating for me: 1) It would be really helpful if they put a a map of the close and your path through it and maybe a small map in each area to note where you are in relation to the whole place. As you move in the relative darkness between a variety of rooms it is difficult to appreciate the structure and orientate yourself in connection to the whole thing. It was only at the end when you get to see the remaining part of close and appreciate it. 2) I felt the price was quite expensive for what you get as there isn't much really to see in the underground. The main entertainment comes from the tour guide bringing life to the history of this place. Still, overall we enjoyed the tour!Hello, Thank you for sharing your wonderful review with us, I will pass this on to the time, and am delighted to hear you found everyone helpful. - Janne ZEdinburgh, United Kingdom15 contributionsFun and informative!Enjoyed a really fun lantern tour, guided by Katie! She gave us loads of information and fun trivia, while other characters brightened (and frightened) the experience, such as Sara the witch hunter. You get a real feel of what it was like to live in a close in Edinburgh in the 17th century. Highly recommend!Hello, Thank you for sharing your review with us and for the four stars! - Jimb0d1Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom37 contributionsPoor valueThis is a straight tourist trap. Don't book. Redirected to gift shop before and after. No offers online. The guide French Sarah was decent but there's simply not enough to see or do here to justify the asking price, especially if you have any knowledge of the plague already. Have been to free museums that impart more information in 5 minutes using traditional exhibits and paid a similar amount for much more engaging interactive live experiences. (Dungeon is an obvious competitor but Alnwick castle, alcotraz, escape rooms, ghost tours etc all comparatively priced or cheaper) No photos allowed (unless you buy one for £10 that you could take for free on any other close). Would like a refund. Most of these reviews completely baffle me.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2023
- DVETheKNorth West England, United Kingdom626 contributionsDON'T avoid like the plague! We were out for lunch with a resident of Edinburgh who recommended it as "the best thing to do" in the city. So off we went. I do like a bit of Urban Exploration of abandoned sites generally so this tour appealed given the nature of the former street and buildings. Very interesting talk by the young guide. Without wishing to sound picky or pedantic, my old secondary school teacher would have had palpitations by the words "where you are stood"...as opposed to "where you are standing". Maybe that was correct though all those years ago. Dunno, I wasn't there! It's getting 4* because it was a touch pricey for what it was. One young person taking a group of 15 or so people around for an hour for £21 a head. Nice work if you can get it. Multiply that for a full day of tours! Enjoyed it. Would recommend despite the grammar and cost.Hello, Thank you for sharing your review with us, it is wonderful to hear you decided to visit our site and that it appealed to your underground interests! Only disappointment is the insistence that anyone over 15 is an adult. Adults are 18. It was really entertaining, Zander has a true gift of making a simple tour seem just like a complex theatre play.

Great experience for the evening. Amazing to hear about all the goings on of the 17th century. Erin was amazing and definitely would recommend coming here if you’re in the city for a couple of days.

Girlguide trip to Edinburgh. We had a great experience doing the Marys close tour. We all learned many new facts about life in the closes. Best part for us all was the extra part we added on of Dr Arnotts sampling class. The girls had a great time and leaders did too learning about medics in this time period. would fully recommend to other units visiting the capitol

We are just home from spending a fantastic few days in Edinburgh. We did the The Real Mary King's Close on Sunday morning which we all really enjoyed. It is mostly underground so we missed a shower of rain while we were doing the tour which was a bonus. Zelda was our guide, she was very friendly and gave us lots of very interesting facts and history of what life was like in the labyrinth of alleys in the old town of Edinburgh. The tour is on the Royal mile and lasts one hour so short enough to allow you plenty of time to explore other fabulous attractions and shopping. Worth a visit

Enjoyed this attraction with some girl friends! Super interesting to see how people lived and how the city has evolved! Pretty chilly/drafty down there too! Didn't see any ghosts...;) Our guide was very good, engaging and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this experience if you're in Edinburgh!

A unique experience in Edinburgh.
A wonderful tour with Mika, who kept us entertained while telling us the history of the Close.
If you're looking to do something other than the usual tourist attractions this tour is not to be missed.
I really enjoyed this experience and found it very informative

Really interesting and fascinating trip. Our guide Beth was excellent. Unfortunately due to a fire we had to evacuate, but Beth led us calmly to safety.
Plan to go another time to finish the tour.

How far underground is Mary kings close

It's not too deep but i wouldn't recommend it if you are even a bit claustrophobic.

Can anyone please advise me as to the best time to visit this attraction?
Dear Debbie,
you can visit as anytime, our tours are underground so they are not dependable on sunlight hours. We find that our early tours might be less crowded on occasions. I hope you find this helpful.

How scary is annies room and the ghost story told in there? Do you have to go into the room?
Hi Donna,
Thank you for your interest in The Real Mary King's Close. The ghost story element of our tour is one of Edinburgh's first recorded ghost stories, which took place on our Close, and is very much a part of our history. It is not scary but some guests might find it a bit chilling. It is just a room in a preserved household, full of toys that people left for her. I hope you find this answer helpful.

Hi,
We have booked a vaults and ghost tour is this a different part of the city or showing the same vaults?
Kind regards

There are a series of Vaults in the Old Town, the most famous of which are Blair Street Vaults and South Bridge Vaults. Mary King’s Close is completely separate from these vaults and is the only underground Close in Edinburgh.

Does anyone jump out at you here or do you have to walk past many waxworks
Holly
Surrey, UK7 contributions
No one jumps out at you at all. There are one or two scenes with waxworks but you can easily keep your distance/they’re in beds so you don’t see much if you don’t go up close. My sister hates waxworks but she was fine, she didn’t find it scary :) it was so interesting and would really recommend!

I’ve booked this already, but I am consider a late night ghost tour or Vault tour aswell, but I don’t want to “double” over things.
Are you pretty much the same as the other vault tours and ghost tours, but obviously yours is better
Or is it totally different area’s they tour

Hi there, we are not a ghost tour, but a social history tour and show you around our uniquely preserved historic site. We look forward to welcoming you!

Hi. My husband has an artificial leg. I'm not quite sure if it may be too steep for him. Are there handrails. I've been down many times. Twice before it was opened to the public, a retired schoolteacher showed us around. I don't know if there are handrails up now as some parts are quite steep. Thank you

There is handrails in place for steps and steep inclines. Best wishes from The Real Mary King‘s Close Team!
