About
This enchanting mural in a Victorian railway tunnel was created to bring visitors to Colinton and to make people smile! The talented art team, led by Chris Rutterford, transformed a dark and scary tunnel into a safe and welcoming home for Scotland's largest historical mural; celebrating the industrial, social, artistic and literary history of Colinton's community. On the walls, there is a poem written by Robert Louis Stevenson - 'To a Railway Carriage'. The poem itself is a visual description of the delight of a child’s rail journey through fast-changing countryside at an exciting pace. The poem’s phrasing echoes the cadence of a fast-moving train and the poem itself has a special extra resonance with Stevenson’s own close connections with Colinton Village as his grandfather used to live there. The words of the poem (along one side of the Tunnel) are complemented by the images contained in those words, all drawn from different parts of Colinton and Water of Leith history.

On a bus route and a 10 minute easy walk. This used to be a dark and dangerous place. The words of a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson have been used to decorate the tunnel. Words on one side, art on the other. Amazing, no words to describe it! Free but donations appreciated to maintain it.

I thought it was just going to be stylised graffiti, but the art work is fantastic. We were all amazed and quite moved by how beautiful it was. Well worth a visit.

I found myself in this tunnel in late afternoon and I'll admit that I was a little creeped out. I looked for side exits but the only openings were the front and back ends of the tunnel. BUT, there are lots of lights. I found myself getting a bit more comfortable along the walk and the graffiti took me in.

Been meaning to come here for ages and made it on a dank day. This art is extraordinary and lit up the dark space on our dog walk. Could while away hours admiring the true art, professional and that of local schools. Lovely 3D effects also.
Will visit again and again.

What a brilliant idea to bring an old tunnel back to life with a lot of colour. I liked the Robert Louis Stevenson drawings the most. Some wonderful colour. It’s just a shame Edinburgh destroyed its wonderful network of trains in the city. Ah well …. Plenty of parking too. Right next to the river. A really pleasant place.

An amazing experience especially as created by local people, artists and school children. Beautiful artwork set in a fantastic natural surrounding with forest and sounds of the river. It is a pity that the bridge is awaiting repair as being able to cross over would have added to the experience.
Obviously well used facility by local people. I only happened upon it by chance - perhaps needs more publicity. It is child friendly and most definitely inspiring as community based.

I was blown away by the amazing job that the artists have done on the murals in the tunnel! The ‘From a Railway Carriage’ poem has now been completed and it looks great. Chris Rutterford and all of the volunteers that have worked on the tunnel have done a fantastic job. The tunnel is bright and vibrant and great for photos. While there are locals who walk and cycle through the tunnel, it is not very busy with tourists. A great little find away from the city centre and in the heart of Colinton.
