Great dip into the belly of Edinburgh - our guide Peter was really well informed and entertaining. The vaults themselves are far bigger than I'd imagined and the stories really illustrate how it was living in Edinburgh back when people lived in the vaults. They're damp and dark and one of the most haunted places in Edinburgh - we did... More

Did the underground vault tour at 1pm. Our guide was Fiona, very pleasant and informative and dresses for the part, although she was frozen. We were taken from meeting point at tron kirk on the royal mile and taken round to the vaults, being given guided tour and facts on the way. The vaults are great and bar a few steps, easy to access... Thoroughly enjoyed the tour, led by Esther. She kept a good balance of the history, and some spooky stories. It was very interesting and also a bit creepy, which is what I was hoping for. I wouldn't like to be left in the vaults alone!

I bought a groupon for the Ghosts and torture tour at 6pm. I learned a bit about life (what there was of it) in the underground vaults of Edinburgh. It was really cool to see the vaults, but I'm not sure that the tour that I went on was the best way to see them. Yeah, it was creepy; they... More

Fantastic tour - the guide (Josh..?) was very knowledgeable and the tour was very atmospheric. No cheap tricks or hidden staff members leaping out at us which were not needed as the tour of the vaults was scary enough... thanks!!

Our tour guide Louis was really good! Good vocal projection and theatrics. Impressed with the stories and how he portrayed 1800s Edinburgh. Enjoyed myself a lot! Would recommend!

Great fun and my 8 & 11 year old loved it, particularly the spooky vaults. Our guide was Esther, a great storyteller and despite their gory nature my children found very entertaining.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
