There are plenty of tours to choose from, but I opted for the one that took in the graveyard as well as the vaults. Eszter was our guide and she was instantly warming and was a great story teller and interacted with everyone. The graveyard part was interesting as I'd already been on a tour around there (by a different... More

After not receiving a reply from phoning the office twice, we walked there to see person busy on internet then told quite categorically that it was a history tour with maybe a bit of spookiness. We said we didn't want a ghost tour but underground history of Edinburgh which he assured us it was. Firstly, after paying, we had to... More

Very good very atmospheric. You can feel what happened in those vaults. Guide was very enthusiastic. But the place doesnt need dressed up. Its dark foreboding and pretty scary. The claustrophobia only adds to the intimidating atmosphere.

We would like to thank our guide, Anna, who made our visit a lot more fun as she was very knowledgable about the area and very scary (in a good way). She had everyone scared using nothing more than a small torch. She was very professional and the tour was very good value for money.

I'm an Edinburgh local but I love these tours so much I've been on them 10+ times. The Auld Reekie tour of The Vaults is the one thing I always insist that my guests go on when they come to Edinburgh as it blows away all the other ghost tours I've been to in other cities. The stories of Edinburgh's... More

We did the ghost and torture tour. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. A great tour with a mixture of history and the paranormal. Doesn't feel commercial and a few people were genuinely scared at some points. Highly recommended.

Our guide I think his name was peter done an excellent job of telling the history of Edinburgh through the terror room and vaults. He kept the crowd interested and was very punctual throughout the tour. I could imagine many getting scared the further into the vaults the tour goes but our guide reminded our group numerous times to let... More

Booked a graveyard and vault tour for 4 adults and 2 children, we had a great time listening about the ghosts and characters from Edinburgh's past. The tour guide was excellent and had an in depth knowledge of the history of Edinburgh. The tour is not too scary but it has it's moments!! If you are visiting Edinburgh and want... More

We've just been on the Haunted Tour (I think our guides name was Grace?). There was only the 2 of us on the tour which made it feel a bit more 'VIP'. She was very informative and friendly but also gave us a nice fright whilst in the vaults! Would definitely recommend the Haunted Tour, even if you don't believe... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
