Neighbourhood: Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighbourhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

- MYDOGISFINNEmsworth, United Kingdom839 contributionsA VERY PRETTY AREAWe walked here by following the river from the Scottish Modern Art Gallery. The river walk is very tranquil and one comes out in Dean Village whcih has a rather Alpine feel to it. Well worth a detour.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 September 2023
- Thomas GAmsterdam, The Netherlands1,870 contributionsLovely area in EdinburghDean Village is a lovely cute area in the sometimes busy city of Edinburgh at 20 minute walk from the centre. Have a stroll around the river and have lovely views. Dean Village is not a real hidden gem, but way less crowded with tourists than the city centreVisited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 September 2023
- nin6Germany221 contributionsBeautiful photo motifs, highly recommended in the best weatherThis destination is an attraction, which is characterized by very beautiful photographic motifs. The walk there from the city center is also worth seeing. There is not much else to do around it. If this appeals to you, I would like to recommend this attraction. See my pictures.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 October 2023
- Nicola W2 contributionsBeautiful Dean Village ❤️We were so so lucky to book a beautiful apartment, on the river, for a short break. Truly beautiful and magical village! Lovely walk from Dean Village to Leith spotting the 3 herons on our walk. Please visit If you get the opportunity.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 December 2023
- The Trusty Trip Gal!England, United Kingdom243 contributionsPicturesque Village But Narrow By The Stream!Dean’s village is a very picturesque little village! It’s very pretty and lovely to have a walk around and take photographs but there isn’t actually much there! You can have a little walk by the stream but it does get a bit busy, crowded and narrow along parts of the stream! It is definitely worth a visit if you like peace and exploring!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 December 2023
- HHBAlex6927Manchester, United Kingdom4 contributionsnice spot in EdinburghA very peaceful and cute little village with a river flowing through it, where you can take many beautiful photos. There are many tourists, but everyone is very disciplined in maintaining the tranquility of the village. It is highly recommended if you come to Edinburgh.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 April 2024
- Paul BChirnside Park, Australia1,051 contributionsNice Village but River Leith walk is fantasticA decent walk from Edinburgh train station, and the village is small and can only be viewed from the outside. But well worth to the walk along the river which was amazing. Make sure you plan as there are no toilets close by. We stopped at the west end bathroom's at Princes Gardens first.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 June 2024
- MarkSheffield, United Kingdom705 contributionsPrettyFirstly, be aware these are people's homes and so treat the area with respect, it does have some history but most people simply appear to take pictures and go into places they shouldn't. It did tick a box off my list of places to visit but once you have your pictures take a stroll following the river down to Stockbridge, its a lovely walk, and on a hot day offers plenty of shelter. In all a lovely location and remember it won't have your traditional tourist facilities , it's a pretty residential location, imagine if it was your home what would your expectations be from the visitors.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 June 2024
- KeokagalTopsham, Maine17 contributionsPretty quiet village in Edinburgh makes a change from the bustleUnexpected beautiful village within 15 minutes walk of Edinburgh Waverly. Lovely river walk even on a rainy afternoon. Tree canopy offered peaceful protection from rain.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 23 June 2024
- Cheryl D48 contributionsBeautifully quaintA walk of around 20 mins from Waverley, takes you to Dean Village ... a beautiful peaceful oasis within the hustle and bustle of the city. This is a residential area, that happens to be very picturesque, so disappointed by the previous reviews unhappy with the lack of amenities (especially as everything you need is only a five minute walk away). Rather than a tourist trap, this is simply a lovely walk with lovely scenery 🙂Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 August 2024

This is a beautiful part of Edinburgh, as many others have described below. We went first thing in the morning and admired the view off the bridge up and down the Waters of Leith, but there were lot of other tourists about. Someone living nearby walked through and muttered something about “Disney Land….”
It’s always important to respect the rights and privacy of the people living in the areas we visit!
I returned a few nights later. It was rather cold, so there was no one else about, and I had a chance to admire the view and listen to the stream in peace and quiet.

When I think about Dean Village, I think about a place that, although situated in Edinburgh, gives you the impression to be in a different place. That is because, it would seem unlikely to anyone that just few steps away from Edinburgh city center there is a village with a waterfall (human-made) and away from the crowd and the traffic. The place remains untouched by heavy human work and the houses of the few lucky residents are colorful, cute and cozy and look like they have just come out of a fairytale. If you think that in the middle of the village, there is a long river that arrives almost at the opposite site of the city, Dean Village is the perfect place to be for an afternoon stroll. Make sure you bring your camera, as you do not want to miss taking a picture of this beauty, from many different angles

Just a walk from the new town is this extremely picturesque village. It’s small so allow only 30 mins or so to wander round but it’s well worth the visit. The old buildings are amazing and there’s plenty of photo opportunities there. Stunning architecture.

What a charming little village built out of stone using the ancient Ashlar method of masonry.
Seemingly built around the river, one can assume that the buildings which are now houses were once probably home to a water mill used to make flower from crops grown in nearby fields.
A charming little village and well worth a walk around.

Having seen lots of photos of Dean Village I was keen to visit, and the view of the waterside cottages from the bridge is lovely. The village has the peaceful ambiance I'd hoped for and I was pleased to note that this is a genuine village, with ordinary folk living there, as opposed to just some tourist attraction. I particularly liked a couple of apartment complexes where the designers had incorporated poles and clothes lines in the courtyards.
The river is very pleasant here and we enjoyed a very nice stroll to Stockbridge on our route back to the city centre.
Highly recommended.

From Dean Bridge look down and see the statue in the small wood shaded river.
Follow the river past the mineral spring tower to the village itself.
The most impressive building was built as community housing by the then proprietor of the "Scotsman" back in the 1880s.
Be prepared for steep slopes and steps.

This is a lovely "village within a city" by the Water of Leith just a short walk from central Edinburgh.
Mainly comprises period looking buildings formerly mill type premises now residential & community buildings, all centred around & both sides of the river & walkway which makes for a very picturesque setting. A good vantage point is the main Dean Bridge which gives a good overview before you walk down the cobbled streets & lanes. Some of the routes up & down are quite steep.
A section of the Water of Leith walkway appears to be currently closed (November 2021) & there is a fair bit of road/lane maintenance going on but doesn't spoil things too much & is well worth a visit or gentle stroll around if staying nearby

My second time taking a stroll around this picturesque (like much of Edinburgh) neighbourhood of the city. Standing in the middle, I could be in an old city across Europe. It is so beautifully quiet and unspoilt, despite the tourists and a great way of getting away from the proverbial hustle and bustle.

The sunny morning encouraged us to take the short walk off the major road to the village. There is a steep road down with a handrail to support those who may not be the fittest. An attractive residential development is set back on the right going down and challenges the reality of being in the city.
The buildings take you back to a distant past and your breath is taken away by the quaintness and as you walk down, the banks of the river are to the right with the occupied buildings looking down towards the river. A couple of the residents commented about the beauty of the location, and it was obvious from the flowers displayed that care and attention is paid to maintain this as a tourist "trap".
Although we did not follow the path into Stockbridge, it was well maintained and would be a natural extension to a walking adventure.

Very pretty village located in the centre of Edinburgh. An oasis of peace and calm right in the middle of the city. Quaint and picturesque buildings, right next to the River of Leith, lots of greenery and nature walks right next to the village.

We've booked an Airbnb in August for 4 nights. Can anyone recommend the best place to park? All the park and ride places I've found are a 3 night maximum.

I live in Dean Village. It's a 10 minute walk, max, from the west end of Princes Street ( where Princes Street meets Shandwick Place). Easiest way from town is to walk down Queensferry Street and then down Bell's Brae.

There's a weekly market in Stockbridge which is very near to Deans Village. I recommend it. Glouchester & Kerr Streets.
Great local food and street eats.
And if you're a fan of cheese then stop in here IJ Mellis Cheesemongers - best grilled cheese ever!

Noi avevamo albergo ad inizio Princes Street, dal lato del ristorante Ryan's...si arriva a piedi in 5 minuti, praticamente Dean Village è una specie di borgo, molto caratteristico comunque, merita di sicuro la passeggiata
