Booked this as part of evening out and thoroughly enjoyed it. The guide was really good. Professional and friendly. Group was small. Only 8 of us but in a way made it nicer and 'cosier'!!!! Definitely worth doing one if these, the history is interesting and also entertaining. Small note, wear sensible flat shoes as bumpy underground and also prepare... More

Stefanie our guide was truely excellent! We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and it was educational, interactive and fun. She was fully engaging and really brought atmosphere to the ghost stories she told. We highly recommend this tour to anyone in for a laugh and a bit of a shiver! Thanks Stefanie, from Vix & Cas ('the last woman'!)

Went on the "Dead, doomed and buried" tour. Our guide, Lydia, was an amazing story teller who was very engaging and made everyone feel very welcome. Best part was the vaults and all in all everything was very well organised. Only downside was it would have been helpful to know that wearing sensible footwear also includes wearing a pair you... Our tour guide for the night walk with underground vaults tour was Mark and he was simply the best. Wonderful to see someone enjoy their work so much! It was like enjoying an evening with a friend telling us his favorite spooky stories in his favorite spooky spot. We actually did 3 Mercat tours during our visit to Edinburgh. All... More

An interesting and entertaining tour of the slightly spookier side of Edinburgh, including the vaults under the South Bridge. Andi, our guide, was excellent and very good in involving members of the tour party. Her script was down pat, with some ad-libs for good measure, which made it more personal. She had plenty of spooky ghost stories, although unfortunately no... More

Hi, Thank you for your wonderful review. If you're visiting Edinburgh you definitely have to do a Ghost Tour at some point. The haunted past of the city is just too interesting. Great to hear that you had fun on your tour. I'll make sure to let Amandine as well. Do keep your ticket for your £2 returner discount and... More

Absolutely loved this. I always enjoy a good scare, as long as I can tell myself I'm going to be ok 😂 I felt completely removed from the real world and I was absolutely terrified! Another person on the tour accidentally grabbed my hair towards the end, and after Marks extremely good story telling, I nearly jumped out of my... More

Went on the Dead and Buried tour with Simon as a tour guide and had a great evening. Edinburgh is the perfect city for this kind of ghost tour which includes a lot of time underneath the streets in the most haunted place in the uk . Tour guide Simon knew his stuff and made it sound fresh and interesting... More

Hi Andrew, Thank you for your 5 star review. Edinburgh is most definitely a great place for Ghost Stories - the haunted past combined with the eerie weather conditions at the moment usually results in a great tour experience. The dark historic tales on Doomed Dead & Buried just add to the atmosphere as well. I'll make sure to let... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
