It was 40F(4C), extreme gusting winds, raining. I asked about the tour and was the only one who booked. Despite the conditions and me being the only guest, Sue powered on through over 2 hours of very entertaining details through the Royal Mile and into the Castle. It was an experience I won't forget.

Went on the underground vaults tour with tour guide Nora. Very knowledgable guide and interesting tour. I do think £12 was quite alot for the tour as it only lasted one hour.

Our guide was Steve who was great. He was clearly experienced & told some brilliant tales of ghosts, hangings & murder. Personally I would have liked to spends bit more time at different locations before going to the vaults but that's just my opinion. The vaults themselves were interesting, a little uneven underfoot but that was to be expected &... More

Our tour guide Martin bought the stories of Edinburgh life back on our underground ghost tour. His stories were great in detail and made us reallu understand history in a different way. The cost was more than reasonable and would consider this a must see attraction in edinburgh.

Very informative and interesting tour led by Charles. Explores the history of the bottom half of the Royal Mile (the town of Canongate), down to Holyrood Palace. Includes links to the Knights of St John, the Masons, and the royalty of Scotland / UK. Charles is very knowledgeable and a proud Scotsman. Tour around 2 hours

Both tours were brilliant. Dr Knox on the ghost tour was a a great tour guid and very informative. He really dressed the part. Took us through all the haunted spots in the old town from the graveyard to the haunted vaults under the city. Then the following morning we met with our tour guid Charlie who took us on... More

Did The Secrets Of The Old Mile tour with Sue our guide. Very knowledgable and brought the history of Edinburgh alive. From how Edinburgh was the site of a volcano to the way it evolved. 1600s Old Town, with customs of throwing your waste (nasties) out the window after 10.00pm, to sedan chairs to get around, to the witch trials... Went on the doomed, dead and buried tour. Very informative guide Simon and knew when to build the drama and suspense up. Not as scary as first thought but still very interesting and gives insight into what life used to be like!

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
