Nestled in the heart of Edinburgh's historic Old Town, the Grassmarket area is one of the most vibrant, picturesque and convivial areas of the city. A paradise of independent merchants, designers and artisans, the Grassmarket Edinburgh is simply bursting with some of the best shopping Edinburgh has to offer. Far more than simply a retail haven, the area is well known for being home to some of the best restaurants in Edinburgh as well as some of the most vibrant and eclectic bars in Edinburgh. In fact the Grassmarket pubs, many with a history dating back to the notorious days of Burke and Hare, are known throughout the world for their exciting, dark Edinburgh history mixed with some of the best traditional food, ales and music in the city! Well preserved cobbled streets, medieval architecture and inspiring views of Edinburgh Castle help to create an atmosphere unparalleled in Edinburgh, Scotland or indeed Europe. With so much to see and do it'

Mostly restaurants and pubs, Grassmarket is a hub of activity. My favorite time to visit is when they have an outdoor market (google schedules). Even if you don't happen to be hungry, it's still worth a visit for the atmosphere, history, and views of the...More

The entire square of Grassmarket is effortlessly beautiful and sits right in the heart of Edinburgh Old Town. With incredible views of Edinburgh Castle and Victoria Street, this is an excellent place to eat and dine with a vast variety of eateries and pubs.

Only visited in the evening. Had many pubs and I distinctly remember a burrito bar in the early hours while very drunk.. it’s a nice location with a vibrant atmosphere.

This is a cute but noisy square with a lot of tourist hotels and restaurants. Very convenient to Royal Mile but not too much character.

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the

I think I missed seeing this in time so sorry for that. Because it might help out others: I have not been there for Hogmany sadly but several tour guides and hotel staff told us the crowds die down and it gets much quieter... More
