Excellent experience for amateur to enthusiast level photographers who want to see Edinburgh from eyes of a professional. James is an extremely experienced professional who has shot rocks stars, sports hero’s, and Anselesque landscape. I’m experienced enthusiast level photographer but learned so many tips and tricks from him. He’s patient, passionate and funny. Don’t miss this tour, educational workshop and experience. I’ll take away many of his suggestions and use to improve my techniques and images .

Booked the Edinburgh Photography tour, wow what a great experience. His knowledge of the city, coupled with his mastery of photography made this both great cultural experience and an outstanding photography experience. He not only showed the landmarks to photograph, he explained the how's and why's of composing a compelling photograph, as well as how to leverage and understand the camera's functionality to a great photo.

As a native of Fife, I thought I knew a little about Edinburgh but James' encyclopaedic knowledge of the best spots in Edinburgh to shoot, and the history that goes with them, put my knowledge to shame. The trip was part photography coaching and part history lesson, sprinkled with fascinating anecdotes of James' time as a well-travelled music photographer. I greatly enjoyed my day spent under James' tutelage, not just because I managed to grab some 5-star shots but also because it gave me increased confidence to get out there and (to paraphrase James) "take some damn pictures!"

James’ gave us the tour of a lifetime in Scotland! We took the 6 night, 7 day tour and it was perfect! We loved the Roslyn Inn and his driving and plans for our daily schedule was great fun and not too slow and not too fast — just right! James was delightful and personable. If I ever go back, he is my first call!

I took Mr Christie's Outlander tour this summer with my two girlfriends: part of a much anticipated tour of Scotland. We were not disappointed! In fact, from Day 1 until the day we left, our expectations were exceeded in every way.
It was clear from the outset that the itinerary of the tour was meticulously planned. This meant that we got to see not just the stand-out locations in Outlander, but also the beautiful scenery of Scotland in ways that made both even more unforgettable. But the best part of our trip was Mr Christie himself. It's one thing to tour a country, another thing to really 'see' it, and James made sure that we did just that! His knowledge of Scottish history, culture and - of course - photography enlivened with week with stories and technical inspiration, and made for a magical experience.
Although I'd describe myself as an amateur photographer at best, James was always patient and respectful in helping me to improve my techniques and get the best from every shot. We all came home with beautiful, evocative pictures that will be memories of a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Thank you for your fantastic review Debbie. It makes me very happy to know that you thoroughly enjoyed your Outlander tour of Scotland. It was very evident that you wanted to improve your photography skills and in the space of just 6 days, the progress was remarkable. You did my Edinburgh Photography Tour prior to the Outlander tour and it was clear, to me, that you had mastered the basic skills of shooting in manual mode on that tour too. I have added more tours to my repertoire, so hopefully we will meet again.
Thank you
James Christie

Just finished the Outlander Tour, in November 2022.
Mr. Christie's tour showed Myself, and Family, Magical Places. With no photography experience, he was extremely helpful and patient with us all. All expectations were met, as Mr. Christie took us to places of such beauty and History, that we left with expectations of visiting again.
Being Fans of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Books and the Series, this tour hit ALL the check marks, as well as some special places. (Chapel where Clarie and Jamie were Wed)
I would recommend the James Christie tour, for a truly wonderful experience.

My family (5 people) and I just finished the Outlander 5 day tour with James on November 6, 2022. We have never been to Scotland and had no professional training with Photography. This was one of the best trips I have ever been on. James was very kind and patient with our lack of photography knowledge. Looking back at our pictures, James was a great teacher.
We are all Outlander fans and the tour did not disappoint. James showed us filming spots that are closed to the public (Chapel where Claire and Jamie were wed). His knowledge of both Outlander and Scotland were amazing and we left Scotland ready to plan out next trip back. I highly recommend James Christie for your tour. You will have a wonderful, memorable experience.

Thank you, Liz, for your wonderful review of my Outlander Tour.
I am thrilled that you enjoyed the locations so much, even tho' a couple were closed due to off-season. Nonetheless, I think it is fair to say, we all had a fantastic experience. You have an amazing family and by the end of the tour, I felt like I was part of your family - so friendly and welcoming. Your Outlander tour was my last one for 2022 and what a way to finish the year!
Thank you again, not only for this fabulous review, but for your custom too. Coming out of a 2-year pandemic has been a challenge for everyone in Scotland, involved in the tourism industry and I can't thank you and your family enough for choosing to book with me. Greatly appreciated.
With thanks
James

CHANGES TO LODGING LOCATIONS
With little or no prior notification or discussion, our lodging type and locations were changed from Edinburgh to Stirling; from Glencoe to Fort William, from Inverness to Dingwall (revised back to Inverness after we objected).
INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR
We arrived in Fort William on Oct 7, for a four night stay at a three bedroom cottage, at which point Mr Christie, to our horror, placed his luggage inside the cottage and informed us he would be sharing our lodging! This is highly inappropriate and unprofessional. We (three women) emphatically stated he could not share our lodging. He responded by saying I was overreacting and tried to convince us to let him stay. Mr. Christie finally left after much protest and found other accommodations. The tension created from this incident remained for the duration of the trip.
POOR PLANNING
I confirmed with the Fort William cottage host that the lodging was booked on Sept 28, 2022 for four people (just four days before our tour was to begin). Yet, we paid a 50% non-refundable deposit in November 2021! Our afternoon tea was to be at the Signet Library however, this was changed due to unavailability. The itinerary was not optimized, resulting in backtracking and eliminating proposed Outlander locations. In total, we saw 55% of the Outlander locations and 75% of the Clanlands locations on the itinerary.
LACK OF ATTENTION TO DETAIL
On multiple occasions we arrived at a location that was closed for filming or we missed the opening or last entry time time because our guide failed to check websites ahead of time. When I discovered that Diana Gabaldon was appearing at an event in Inverness, Mr. Christie responded, “It’s sold out.” It was not sold out and the event was the highlight of our trip, no thanks to Mr. Christie.
SMOKING
Mr. Christie is a smoker which was not disclosed ahead of time. While he did not smoke in the car, you cannot escape it.
SCOTTISH HISTORY/OUTLANDER KNOWLEDGE The conversations mostly centered around himself, his personal life and modern day politics. At Dunure castle, Mr. Christie stated, “read the plaque, it explains it better than I can” and walked away. At Doune Castle, for some unknown reason, he was adamant that we not take the free audio devices, yet left us to wander on our own. I later went back for the device and was delighted to hear Sam narrate the Outlander portions of the castle tour.
TOO MUCH TIME IN THE CAR
On many days we spent half, if not more, of our day driving and/or stopping for lunch with no opportunities for short walks or hikes.
EXPERIENCE NOT COMMENSURATE WITH COST
Our three person tour cost £898 (over $1000) per day, yet we incurred additional expenses that were included in our tour price but not provided. Mr. Christie cut corners, altered itinerary and changed accommodations for his own financial benefit.
GASLIGHTING
The most obvious example is telling me that I was overreacting when he tried to insert himself into our lodging and convince us it was no big deal. He will no doubt, gaslight this review and attack me personally, in complete denial of his own actions. He has already done so in an email accusing me of abusing his kindness and hospitality while threatening to extort additional money from us. He forgets we paid him for a service; the relationship was transactional not that of “friends” vacationing together.
The Scottish Photography Experience website promotes “a once in a lifetime Outlander experience.” In my lifetime, I hope I never experience a tour like this again.

After extensive research, two friends and I booked James’ combined Outlander / Clanlands tour and added two extra days to explore the Isle of Skye and participate in the Dramathon (a race in the Highlands).
Photography: James more than met my expectations regarding photography. He explained the relationship & interplay between f-stop, shutter speed and ISO and talked about the economy of the shot. Throughout the two weeks, I got much more comfortable with my camera through repetition and practical tips on composition and settings. Constructive criticism was delivered respectfully and always helpful. We photographed interesting places from unique perspectives.
Logistics: Unfortunately the logistics fell far short of my expectations.
•What we agreed to and paid $15,900 for:
--14 nights in hotels with full Scottish breakfast
--1 night at James’ home due to a long last day on the Isle of Skye and proximity to the airport when he drops us at EDI for our journey home.
--Transportation to / from EDI on arrival and departure
•What he changed it to (without our prior knowledge):
--4 nights in hotel with full Scottish breakfast - in a different city (Stirling instead of Edinburgh)
--9 nights in vacation cottage that he planned to share with us (unprofessional and unacceptable)
--2 nights at his 1BR apartment (cost savings for James)
•What we received:
--13 nights in hotels or vacation cottages (4 of which included a full Scottish breakfast; 9 of which we purchased our own groceries)
--1 night at his apartment - one of us had to sleep on his couch
Unfortunately, we had to pay for our final night at a hotel, breakfast and transportation to the airport (all was supposed to be included in the price we paid for the trip) because he would not provide it nor reimburse us for it.
Lodging:
•We know that James made at least one reservation on Sep. 28 (we arrived in Scotland Oct. 1).
•We did not agree to stay at his small 1BR apartment for more than 1 night. We were complimentary of his hospitality, polite and flexible but it was a very uncomfortable situation - we were just trying to make the best of a bad situation. After the 1 night, we considered our agreement fulfilled and would never do that again.
•Upon arrival in Ft. William, we learned he planned to share our accommodations with us. We had a direct discussion with James to reset expectations. As a result, he found a separate place to stay - and the tenor of the entire trip changed. One morning we thanked him for the comfortable accommodation. He tersely replied that he had to sleep in a place that housed the overflow for homeless people. Very unprofessional behavior.
Planning & Professionalism:
•My expectation is that James would double-check closures in advance (save time & petrol). On two occasions, we arrived at locations and found that they were closed (either for filming or the opening hours had changed as of Oct. 1). Both times the location’s websites clearly stated closures / hours so my friends and I started checking websites in advance (not our job!).
•We learned that Diana Gabaldon was speaking at a theatre in Inverness while we were there. We brought the opportunity to James’ attention (he said it was sold out - it wasn’t) and asked him if we could fit that evening program into our schedule (we did). This was one of the highlights of our trip. We learned more about the way of life in the Scottish highlands in the 18th century by speaking with people at the theatre who were dressed in period costume and sharing history with us.
•Smoking: James smokes - never in the car but the smell of cigarette smoke permeates. I’m a non-smoker and this really matters to me.
•On several occasions I was extremely uncomfortable with the “oversharing” of information about James’ personal life. I repeatedly steered the conversation back to photography and history.
While the photography portion of the tour was practical and the scenery was BEAUTIFUL, it was outweighed by all that I described above and by the discomfort and tension my travel companions and I experienced on this trip for which we had such high hopes.
Lesson learned - if I take a tour in the future, it will be with an established, professional tour operator with an experienced team behind them.

The tour was all that was advertised. We saw so many fantastic Outlander sites and were able to explore Scottish history as well. I think we saw most of Scotland during the week we were there. Our hotel in Stirling also gave us the opportunity to explore Stirling Castle on our own.
As far as photography, James was very helpful with suggestions about lighting and composition. Seeing Scotland/Outlander sites was our main focus, and that was fine with James. In fact, he used his iPhone so that he could experience what we were doing.

Thank you, Chris, for a fabulous review of my Outlander Tour. I am very happy that you and your daughter, Emma, enjoyed it so much.
It was an absolute pleasure to be in your company and show you not just the Outlander sites, but the overall beauty of Scotland.
I hope you will visit again someday.

Thank you for your enquiry.
The charge is the same for photographers and non-photographers. We have been accredited by VisitScotland, Scotland's National Tourist Board with a rating of "Excellent" because there is significant historically correct content to the tour as well as the photographic elements. Some of the reviews on TripAdvisor state that the reviewer was not a photographer but thoroughly enjoyed the tour for the historic content.
I hope this answers your question.
Sincerely
James Christie
