Neighbourhood: Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.

You can’t visit Scotland and not hibe a nod to Johnnie, especially if you enjoy Scotch. Visit the rooftop bar on the 6th floor if you get a chance and the tasting tour is very good as well.Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten 31 December 2022
- matsrosscoGlasgow, United Kingdom6 contributionsNot for whisky drinkers, aimed at touristsAimed at tourists, not whisky drinkers. Slick tour with no substance. 1.5 hour tour with 2 of 3 drinks provided in the last 10 minutes, which doesn’t leave enough time to drink longer drinks, even with the lovely Patrick providing a 4 minute countdown!! Very disappointing, would not recommend.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 January 2023

- LouEdinburgh, United Kingdom23 contributionsRestaurant Review: Delicious food but disappointing service. This review is for the restaurant only, we didn't do a tour. I can see the tour aspect is very highly rated. Overall the food is very good, but the service we received really let us down. We ate last night for a birthday meal. The evening got off to a good start but we felt mostly abandoned and a lot of our evening was spent waiting around and trying to get the attention of one of the waiting staff. The restaurant wasn't even that busy, there were about 3 or 4 empty tables. Between our starter and main, we weren't asked if we wanted more drinks, so we didn't receive our chosen bottle of wine until we had started eating our main. After our main was cleared we were waiting for 25 minutes until we managed to get the attention of someone to see the dessert menu. I'd like to highlight that we were the ones who had to flag someone down, if we hadn't I have no idea how long we would have waited. Once we flagged that we had been waiting for a while the service dramatically improved, but again once the dessert had cleared there was a very long wait to get the bill. Overall a disappointing first visit. I will reiterate that the food was excellent, but the lack of attention was enough to leave a bad taste. We paid a lot of money for meal and I just don't understand why such an iconic establishment has such lacking service. The staff were all polite to us, but guests shouldn't be the ones trying to flag staff down with such long waits. Another point to mention is that the table was so small, we struggled to fit our drinks and plates on it and it just made the dining experience a little uncomfortable. I notice that this was flagged in another review in January 2022 and the response said this would be reviewed but it doesn't look like it has. For food, our table had the flat iron steak and rabbit. This was all excellent and very tasty. We had all the dessert options and have no complaints there at all. I had the pulled pork doughnut as a small bite and it really is small, very tasty but just enough for one person. Overall we were happy with the food, but the lack of attention and poor levels of service was disappointing.Dear Cara O, Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent visit to the 1820 bar at Johnnie Walker Princes Street. It is only through feedback such as this, that will help us to reach our goal of becoming a world class visitor attraction, offering exceptional food and drink experiences. In reading your comments, I was disappointed to see that this was not the case on your visit. I can see that there are certain areas in which we can improve, and I have passed your feedback on to my Food and Beverage Managers for their review. Please rest assured that positive corrective action will occur to ensure that we consistently provide attentive and proactive service to each guest. After newly opening our visitor attraction in September of 2021, we have actively reviewed and worked on the feedback that we have received, one of which was changing the layout and furniture in the 1820 bar this past May. I understand that there are still some areas in which we can improve, and we will take your feedback onboard to see what more can be done. Thank you for your kind words on the food, I am delighted to see that you found the offerings to be excellent, I know that our culinary team will be delighted to hear their hard work has been recognized If there were any more information that you would like to provide about your recent visit, please feel free to e-mail us at JWPS.F&B@diageo.com so that we can further look into how we can improve. - TartanjohnOlney, United Kingdom164 contributionsEnjoyable experience - without the Experience!Visiting Edinburgh and being a whisky enthusiast, we just had to take in the Johnnie Walker Experience. Time was against us so had to settle for a visit to the Skyline bar rather than taking the tour. Approaching one of the staff at ground level, we asked if we could simply have a drink and he pondered the question before saying, he would fit us in (not sure if this was a ploy but if it was, he certainly didn't make it seem like one - left us feeling we were being given 'special treatment'. He directed us to the lifts and told us to mention that we had been given the ok by the shop and up we went. Met at the door, said the magic words and were taken to a table. Spent almost an hour having a wander round the drinks menu. At one point, in animated discussion with my daughter in law, I knocked my drink over losing a fair amount of it. Staff were quick to help clean up the liquid but I must admit, I was more than disappointed not to receive a replacement. Knowing the industry fairly well, the cost of the 'loss' was miniscule to Johnnie Walker but the PR and customer respect is massive. A real disappointment. The views from the viewing gallery were superb and I guess the next time I am up in Edinburgh with some time to spare, I would hope to visit and go on the tour.Dear Tartanjohn, Thanks for taking the time to review us here on Tripadvisor! I'm glad to hear that your welcome came across as special, and that you enjoyed the views from our 1820 Bar (the pics are great!) I'm sorry to hear that your drink was not replaced on this occasion and I would like to assure you that your experience is not the kind of service we are offering to our guests. I hope that we get another opportunity to showcase our World class service to you sometime soon! - Mtttt11 contributionsExtremely Rushed exoerienceCheck in staff were extremely helpful and pleasant and the venue is well presented. The storytelling part at the start was very good but rushed. My husband has a hearing problem so struggled to keep up with the pace of the presentation. The first tasting session was good and at least if you hadn’t finished your drink you could take it on to the next part of the demonstration. It is a strict time of 90 minutes and we felt the staff were constantly rushing us from one thing to the next unlike the 2-3 hours mentioned on the website. The second tasting session we had around 15/20 minutes to drink two whisky cocktails and weren’t allowed to move to another area in order to relax and finish our drinks which totally spoiled the whole experience. Having been to other drink experiences like the Guinness factory and Heineken Experience in Amsterdam customers are allowed to relax for as long as they wish and enjoy their drinks. I also think the experience would have been so much better if customers had been able to ask questions but they obviously didn’t ask for questions as they would have ran out of time. If you are not wanting to drink whisky the alternative non alcoholic drinks were the soda water with a flavoured syrup so in essence the same as what was in the whisky hi-balls but without the whisky was quite unpleasant, no options for sodas, fresh juices etc. It must have been very difficult for foreign visitors with limited English language to follow at the pace they were going at. Definitely not good value for those not drinking the whisky.Dear Mtttt, Thank you for taking the time to write this detailed review with your feedback. We are glad to hear that your welcome into the building was pleasant, and that you enjoyed the storytelling section of the tour. I am unsure where you have read the 2-3hr runtime of our Journey of Flavour, as our website states that this is a 90 minute immersive experience, which does involve some structure as we guide you from room to room. I appreciate your feedback regarding hard of hearing/foreign guests. I would like to assure you that we are currently working towards implementing translation devices on the Journey of Flavour for a variety of languages (including English) in the near future, and are developing a BSL translated whisky experience. We currently offer documents in several languages explaining the rooms for guests to take with them on tour to assist with this in the meantime (on request), and are proud of our multicultural/multilingual team who can also help guests with English as a second language. I'm sorry you felt that there was not enough time to ask questions during the experience with the timed sections of the tour. We encourage our guides to use the time in the tasting areas to take any questions as required, as those rooms have a more flexible structure. Our guides also make themselves available in the retail space, where the tour ends, to pick up and answer any questions at that point if they were unable to while on tour. Your thoughts and concerns are certainly appreciated, and we will make sure to take all constructive feedback on board as we continually develop our experience. I hope we may be able to welcome you back sometime soon, perhaps to our rooftop bar, where the mocktail options will be more plentiful outside our core whisky experience if you do not wish to drink whisky. However we were greeted right away and asked what our intentions were . Reservations? No problem- they radioed upstairs and we caught a lift to the top floor . Beautiful setting with the best view in the city . Bar was amazing but the best find was Conner behind the bar . This young man not only knowledgeable but truly passionate about his craft and made us feel so welcomed. Was our pleasure to meet him.Dear 20robynk, Thanks a lot for taking the time to write a review for us! I am pleased to hear that your arrival/lobby experience with us was swift and efficient, and that we found a space for you upstairs in the 1820 bar! - The Bear86 contributionsSkip the show, drink in the barBooked a 90 minute review. The show is just too fast / slick with way too many lights, and too much corporate soundbites. Totally aimed at tourists. If English was not your first language , I feel you would struggle as the pace is very fast, and talking is to a circular audience at times and gets a bit hard to hear most of the time. It’s overpriced for what you get, trying to dazzle you with lights to cover light substance. If you want to know more about whisky- do a distillery tour. On the positive side we did eat in the bar on the roof afterwards ; fabulous views and you can walk around the building. Overpriced food and drinks again… but we felt you get less ripped off because the location here is worth it. So maybe drink/eat on the rooftop and ignore the exuberant show. It is after all, only a drink !Dear The Bear, Thank you for taking the time to review us here and share your thoughts on the tour. We certainly do try to immerse and engage our guests in the world of Johnnie Walker with lights and sound to accompany the information we share about the history of the company, the whisky making process in a slightly more accessible way, and a little about blending. I appreciate your concerns in terms of accessibility. We are currently working on developing ways to cater for guests with English as a second language, including our multicultural team able to speak a variety of languages, information sheets in different languages when required, as well as a language translation device system that we are looking to implement very soon. On top of this we are also pleased to be working towards offering an experience in BSL to cater to guests with hearing difficulties in the near future! I'm glad you were able to visit our rooftop bar and enjoy the great views we have up there! I hope we can welcome you back sometime in the future, perhaps on one of our focused, guided whisky tastings with one our of whisky experts where we let the liquid speak for itself a little more, sat comfortably in our rooftop Bothy Bar, or our Whisky Makers Cellar. - DowndieEdinburgh, United Kingdom80 contributionsWell scripted for touristsWe were given 5 whiskies to taste with the final one being Johnny Walker Black Label but the four previous whiskies (which were not great) were cleverly picked to make the final whisky taste wonderful. All carefully scripted for the tourists but for Scottish whisky drinkers it felt like a bit of a con to make you buy from the overly expensive gift shop. I’m sure the tourists lap it up but definitely not for locals.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 April 2023

They give you a history of Johnny Walker and his family. One of the exhibits is live person which is very well choreographed. You are allowed to do tasting after taking quiz of what they think you would like. At conclusion, you visit gift shop and can buy whiskey, etc.Dear GatewayTraveler2015, Thank you for taking the time to leave this review, we're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your experience with us. Went along with some friends not knowing what to expect! I’ve been on many distillery visits over the years! This was absolutely not what I expected!
More Harry Potter than Brigadoon!!
Without a spoiler alert, Julie who entertained us with a fantastic visual show, gave a presentation that was memorable!
Added to that, the mixology and attention to detail was terrific! Would highly recommend the Johnny Walker experience!
If intending to stay and experience the rooftop bar, I’d recommend booking!

My wife and I highly enjoyed our Whisky Explorers at the Explorers' Bothy tasting to experience a range of different whiskies and learn and how they're incorporated into the various blends, and separately loved the 1820 bar experience. The banana pesto w/ the blonde whisky was quite amazing

Did the Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour which gives highlights of the journey of the brand from the start to present day with tasting opportunities, great for if you are not a hard core whisky drinker. Presenter Xian was great and kept us interested all the way through. Great venue, great tour and we loved the tasting rooms where it showed you how many ways to drink JW! The staff around the building and in the shop are friendly and there is no pressure to purchase, and they will chat to you to ask what you thought of the tour, the drinks and whether its changed your mind. A great experience all round.

From start to finish, the customer service was outstanding. In particular, Chris, Des, Matty, and Russell were all amazing. Matty as a tour guide was interesting, engaging and funny. Russell gave a flawless performance and made us even more interested in Johnnie Walkers history. Chris and Des made us feel extremely welcomed and absolutely made our visit. From asking if we wanted our gifts left at the till while we carried on looking round, to going the extra mile and letting us try the blue label Umami, even though they knew we wouldn't be buying it. Our experience at Johnnie Walker left us smiling for hours!

This was a great tour! We had an amazing guide named Thomas. He was great to watch and listen to kept everything exciting. The history and magic behind the whiskey is great and the rooms they take you through are visually great and keep you listening. Sarah who does the story telling about Johnnie walker is really good at her job and watching her sing and dance was a great show

They have a tour which lasts 90 minutes and is £28 and a tour for 60 minutes and costs £35. Please can someone tell me which is the better tour between these two tours?
Thank you very much

I recommend the short tour unless you are a Scotch fanatic. Essentially, the longer tour features a "special" tasting in their better tasting room which takes a bit more time. Arturo

They give you the history of Johnnie Walker and how the flavor profile works. You get 2 tasting in the choice of mixed, highball or straight. They make accommodations for non-drinkers. There're no snacks.

Yes. I went up before my tour to do my own tasting. I think there was an opening time or maybe it was a lunch opening time. When I got there I was the only person and it looked like they were setting up, but they let me in!
