Interesting multipurpose venue. Great for exhibitions and travelling shows. Friendly staff and a good bar area. Many exhibits are ticketed and it can get quite busy depending on the events and time of year. Worth a gander.

An all round amazing experience! A group of us went along last Friday to Summerhall for the start of the weekend's Edinburgh Juniper Festival. I had never been to the new image Summerhall events venue before as I remember it as part of the Royal Dick Veterinary College back in the day. Nor had I ever attended a gin festival... More

Well, the bar staff are friendly enough, but front of house appears to be populated by pompous Edinburgh University students who rather obviously have had no training in customer service at all. Staff are notorious in Edinburgh for being incompetent, and they outdid even themselves on Friday. And the toilets are rank. Still, they do put some cool stuff on.... More

Dave, Thank you for taking the time to leave some feedback. Without it we certainly would not know if our visitors have a less than excellent experience. I am glad you felt our bar team were friendly and I am sorry that you did not enjoy your interaction with our front of house team. Our customer facing front of house... More

We went along to see an exhibition that was on. It was a fascinating warren like place with plenty of things going on. I was impressed that they had stuff for kids, a decent cafe but also had some really challenging art exhibitions. I would definitely take the time to check what's on hete if in Edinburgh. If we lived... More

Tuesday ceilidh is a great fun - keen novices need not worry. Book ahead or you might not get in - it was full the night we went.

There is lots going on in Summerhall......my daughter is on an animation course for kids. The building used to be the vet school which makes it quite quirky. The cafe is really nice. Lots of space, free wifi and great coffee. Not at all expensive. £2.50 for a Flat White that would put Starbucks to shame. Fact that it is... More

Music will get you dancing in a go. All ages and mixed types. Some in kilt and some in gym shoes. Some know the dances and will help you. So much fun to dance that night. Take an extra shirt along - you will be warm and sweaty.

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
