We went on the Underground Ghost Tour and had Mary Balfour as our guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour especially going underground. Mary did a great job and we liked the intriguing facts and stories she told during the tour. It was our last day in Edinburgh and our third time to the city and we were still surprised by... More

Booked the extreme paranormal tour led by Daniel Defoe at 10.15. The tour took us up the mile, around the back alleys, and through a graveyard with our guide giving the history (and gory details) of life in the old town and the gruesome people involved. Then down into the vault for a look at one of the oldest parts... More

I really enjoyed this walking tour because of the little anecdotes and stories, and also because the guide - 'Dr Knox' - was a good storyteller. The stories were funny and interesting and we got to learn some quirky facts about the city. Don't book this tour if you're looking for something scary, though. The underground bit was actually a... I went on the quarter to 7 tour on the 15th of April. The guide, Vlad showed us around and provided excellent, detailed stories, helping to deliver an overall better understanding of the city of Edinburgh for me as well as everyone else. Very friendly and engaging to those who are from outwith Edinburgh. Highly recommended!

We were shown around by the good Doctor at 22:15 (10:15pm). I am not going to tell you too much about the tour, because I think it's 'fun' not knowing. I also recommend not looking at the pictures before hand, but it's up to you. Was thrilling and genuinely historic. It's not a tour where they "try" and scare you... More

The perfect ghost tour for anybody interested in knowing a bit more about the lore and urban legends of the city. We got to roam around the Royal Mile and to visit the underground city, with just the right balance of creepy stories and historical facts. Our ghostly guide Cassandra was lovely, funny and knowledgeable, and Dr. Knox who welcomed... More

Overall it was a great experience the tour guide was telling us interesting information. So overall it was great however the tour guide wasn't very enthusiastic just wearing a costume and talking about the places we went to which is fine but me and my family would have liked to have seen more enthusiasm. I definitely recommend it

My fiend and I came from Dublin for a short break and we did the extreme paranormal tour on Tuesday night 11/April. Dr Knox was a great tour guide and told us some of the bad history of Edinburgh in an interesting funny way. We went to the grayfriars graveyard which was brill and spooky at nighttime, and then we... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
