This was by far one of the best experiences I have ever had. Nory, the tour guide is incredibly personable and knowledgable. Not only did we go and see some of the most amazing landscapes and hear the folklore related to each one, but when every other tour company neglected the Fairy Pools because of the snow Nory still took... Words cannot describe how amazing this trip was. Nory the tour guide really makes the entire experience of the Highlands magical and unique. There isn't a story he tells that you can turn away from. The whole experience seems surreal because of how he runs the tour and really immerses you in the history and folklore of the Highlands and... More

The Highlands are an incredible place to visit and the experience is once in a lifetime! It was an amazing trip and Nory's knowledge about the land is incredible! His stories were described in a very unique way and narrated beautifully whilest we were watching the monuments, the lochs, the castles and building the stories in our heads! He was... More

The tour was gorgeous and thanks to Nori's stories you are assured to get the best of the historical/mythical Scottish Highlands history. Even if I knew no one on the trip, in three days we were all friends ! I would recommend this tour to anyone who loves nature and breathtaking sightseeing !

I went on a two-day tour with my study abroad program that was condensed especially for us. Norrie went off the itinerary he was given in order to show us the best of Scotland. I feel like I made a friend in him, he is without a single doubt the best tour guide I have ever had. His personal touches... More

What a fantastic trip. Norey is passionate and very well informed about his wonderful country. With a good sense of humour and endless stories to keep us entertained. I would highly recomment this trip for anyone wanting to travel to Skye with a small group. We had some amazing adventures. Thanks Norey, you're a legend!

The highlight of our 10 trip to Scotland was positively the four days we spent with Nory and "Hamish the bus" visiting the Highlands and Isle of Skye. As an intrepid group of 11 teenage girls and 2 leaders I can say with all honestly that Heartland travel met the needs of every one of our traveling members. Nory's love... More

I took my ten year old son on the four day Classic Skye/Inverness tour after spending two weeks in Edinburgh during festival season. We departed Edinburgh and Nory began to weave the history, folklore, music and the very heart of Scotland into a web of spellbinding storytelling magic so captivating that we hung on his every word. When words would... More

We went hitch-hiking in Scotland and ended at the waterfall nearby Portree. We where in the middle of nowhere and a bus of heartlandtravel took us with them! We where suffering from so much muggies and Nory asked us "where are you guys going to" we said: "Anywheere! Take us anywhere!". In that way we had a 20 minutes free... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
