Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Received a voucher to attend a Tapas and wine tasting evening and it was a very enjoyable experience. Highly informative but fun. Definitely looking for other events to attend

A thrice-postponed voucher-based visit thanks to Covid but Justin (the business owner and operator) was very flexible. Most businesses would have just shrugged and said "hard luck, your voucher has expired".
A very enjoyable and informative event of around 5 hours duration. There were around 16-18 of us and our leader for the day - Justin - is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable presenter and guide and kept the course moving along at a good pace. The day began at 11am at the Hotel du Vin in Edinburgh, and consisted of 2 hours evaluating 6 white wines (including a champagne and a "mystery" wine) followed by a 2-course lunch (with wine of course) followed by 2 hours with 6 reds plus a port. The wine measures were around 1/3 of a "normal" glass size and ample for tasting. Honestly, if they were any larger no-one would leave the room upright so just the right size for such an event. The wines chosen are selected from the "mid-price" bracket at around £15 per bottle (a couple up to £20-£25), each available from your usual high street retailers, and were exemplars of different grape types and styles.
The tastings were interspersed with discussions on topics such as pricing, food-pairings, manufacture, the difference between oak-barrelled/"oaked"/and non-oaked (steel vat) wines, reading a bottle label, avoiding marketing "ploys" and what makes champagne "champagne" etc. with plenty of opportunity for discussions.
I left very happy and pleasantly "wobbly". The course would suit beginners to those with a little to moderate knowledge who would like to know more (other more advanced courses are available I believe). The voucher cost £95 which - in my view - is very good value considering you're getting 5 hours of (guided) enjoyment and knowledge, and in a great atmosphere. I will definitely go again.

Such a lovely evening tasting wines with Justin! I learnt a great deal and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! My friend and I felt very relaxed and the COVID precautions were great:
Justin wore a mask while pouring wines; windows were open; lots of hand sanitiser available and socially distanced tables (but not people who came together!). A lot of fun and I would recommend xxx

My husband bought me the Sat Wine Tasting event and we had to cancel due to him working away and rearrange to go last Sat 23rd November and due to having 2 young kids they ended up with a sickness bug which we emailed and text Justin and only got a reply on Monday to say that if we want to attend another date we would have to pay extra ie 50% which my husband allready paid £180. I know its a small business but I feel that it is cheeky to ask for the extra cost. I am very dissapointed and will not be recommending Lothian Wine School. If you do purchase read the small print!

Hi Karen,.
You were booked in to the event on Saturday having already rearranged this event 4 times previously. You emailed me 2 hours before the event was due to start to say you were unable to attend and you'd like to rebook or get a refund. Our terms and conditions, which you agreed to when you booked state clearly that we require 4 weeks notice for a refund, and 2 weeks notice to rearrange the event. We ask for this notice to give us a chance to resell places which in this case we obviously weren't able to do, as you only let us know on the morning. When customers don't attend events it costs us not only the wine samples that have been prepared, but we're also still required to pay for your lunches, as this is arranged in advance. If we allow you to rebook to another event, not only will we have to pay these costs for the event you've missed, but we'll also lose out on £170 income, as you'd be taking up two places on the next course that we'd be unable to sell. I have tried to explain to you why this isn't fair or reasonable, and why as a small business we have to have rules in place to enable us to survive.
However, we actually WERE flexible, and instead of telling you you couldn't rebook as per our T&C's, I actually offered you the chance to attend another event for a 50% reduction on our normal fees. This is far more generous than any other events company would ever offer you. I would still lose money from this, but I wanted to offer it to you as customer service is incredibly important to us. Unfortunately you described the offer as 'completely ridiculous'.
It is also worth noting that on the previous occasions where you cancelled without the requisite amount of notice, we actually did allow you to rebook to a new event at no extra charge.
So whilst I really genuinely hate to see dissatisfied customers, on this occasion I very strongly believe that we really have gone above and beyond to do everything that we can to be accommodating to you.
Thanks,
Justin

Had a very interesting, fun, informative day with Justin yesterday doing the day introductory wine course. Good company, wine and food. Also very grateful that the hotel accommodated my food intolerances.
Lots of new ideas to explore when choosing wine. Thank you for a great day.

We enjoyed a fantastic tasting day learning about wine with Lothian Wine School. Our host, Justin, is fabulously knowledgable about wine but is very relaxed and made the day an absolute pleasure. The format of the day at Hotel du Vin works very successfully and allows you to taste 6 white wines in the morning and 7 reds in the afternoon with a very good lunch (with more wine!!) inbetween.
We tasted lots of different wines that I would not necessarily choose ordinarily and therefore found it a very educational and informative day out. Justin has a lovely relaxed and informal demeanour which although he imparts a lot of really useful information, it is done in such a way that it means everyone is fully involved and thoroughly enjoys it.
Brilliant fun, really educational and very good value. I would thoroughly recommend Lothian Wine School to anyone.

Christmas gift for my wife. Superb day out; held at Hotel du Vin. Justin was charismatic, great fun and very knowledgeable and informative with clearly a huge passion for the subject. Very relaxed day. Tasted some excellent wines that we hadn’t tried before.

I did the introduction to wine tasting lunch. Couldn't recommend it enough. Really enjoyable and learned a lot. Very relaxed atmosphere and not pretensious at all.

Went here on friday for an evening of food and wine paring and it was amazing . Seven wines to try and there was plenty to go round matched with duck , smoked salmon, venison salami, blue cheese, vintage cheddar , crab and ice cream the food totally changes the taste of the wine .
The owner of wlw runs the session for two hours very knowledgeable and passionate clearly knew his stuff .
Session was well organised group not too big . I recommend this event very enjoyable evening .

A group of us attended a session as part of a 50th birthday celebration and we all loved the experience. We all like wines socially but didn’t perhaps appreciate the difference pairing different wines to food can make. Justin was brilliant in taking us through the different wines that match Scottish foods and it was eye opening. Would thoroughly recommend.
