Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Fantastic fun! I think a lot of people go into this with the wrong expectations and then will not enjoy it or feel offended...

My wife really wanted to take me to this and I didn't understand why - I was expecting a brutally graphic and disturbing history museum about human misery and suffering.

Let's make one thing very clear. This is not a museum or academic experience. Its SO MUCH BETTER!

It's like a live-action, audience-participation version of "Horrible Histories"! Goofy, rude humour from a cast of suspiciously similar-looking historical figures. Lots of spooky jumpy scary splashy nonsense in dark, creepy settings.

Its NOT FOR EVERYONE. You MUST be willing to participate and have a laugh and not take it too seriously. If that's for you, then the experience is really great fun.

I keep seeing reviews about rude staff. I think people misunderstood. Unless theres a good reason to break the immersion of the experience, the staff are always in character and always over-the-top. So they will mock you, insult you and call you every funny historical name they can. Again, if you're willing to have a laugh at the expense of yourself and your friends/family then it's really entertaining and funny.

Just to pre-warn people without spoiling too much, some of the scenes that you pass through are in pitch-black darkness with flashing lights, jump scares and physical effects (like a ghost train I suppose). If this is not your thing or you have very young children, then you might not enjoy the experience. I am not usually a fan of "spooky" entertainment stuff, but I was willing to give this a go and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was brilliant from start to finish. The atmosphere was tense and chilling. The actors were extremely good and spine tingling in their delivery. Awesome tour.

The Dungeon visit was good and as expected but as we have also been to the London, Blackpool and Warwick Castle Dungeons, in comparison we didn’t think this was the best. It’s still a good experience and great to learn about Edinburgh’s history. There were some odd comments by the actors that were not suitable for the younger audience but to be fair, this was to be expected and not a criticism. The interactive elements were great.

Hey Zizziboo, Thank you for taking the time to give us a review. Our Dungeon family in London, Blackpool and Warwick will like no doubt use this post against us later.... We are pleased you enjoyed learning about Edinburgh's grim history and still enjoyed the interactive elements of the show! We allow children from 5 years up into the attraction, however really recommend for 8 years plus, I am interested to hear what the odd comments were that you felt were not appropriate for children, if you have time to elaborate more you can get me at Edinburgh.Dungeon@merlinentertainments.biz Many Thanks

We went to the Edinburgh dungeons on Wednesday, it was really fun and the actors were great. We also went on the drop ride at the end and got a hilarious picture. Angus who served us was really sweet and gave us a free wallet sized photo of the imagine as we couldn’t stop laughing. 10/10 would recommend

A really fun way to spend a few hours in Edinburgh city centre! I am a scaredy cat when it comes to things jumping out and creepy noises but I faced my fears and got through it! The characters are all brilliant and the effects throughout are so effective. The only downfall I felt was the price as there is an additional fee to get photos printed or sent to your phone. I do think a photograph to your phone should be included (we paid £43.90 for two for the tour) as it is likely to be shared on social and will generate more awareness and business for the experience. Overall, we had a great time and I would recommend!

Absolutely loved our dungeon experience. The actors and sets were superb and stories so interesting. Was slightly nervous about the fear factor but it was more entertaining than frightening. Some 10 year old children were there which I thought was too young (but parents will be able to judge how their kids will handle it). Be prepared to join in and laugh when you get picked on to play a part!

Hey Ms_FJT, Thank you for the kind words and the 5 star review. Our tour is designed to try to balance out the scary parts and the fun parts so as not to overwhelm our guests. We are very pleased to hear you enjoyed the experience and were up for playing along. For any parents reading in, we recommend the tour for ages 8 years and up. but allow children as young as 5 years. Some kids love it, some hate it, Like all humans it really depends on the individual.

We thoroughly enjoyed the dungeons.
The actors were brilliant, and we learnt a little bit about the history too.
We also loved how they got everyone participating in the experience.
The only downside is when it’s finished you go into the room to view the pictures they took of you at the start and on the final ride.
They were expensive, but we purchased some as it was our first time in any of the dungeons, but it would’ve been really awkward saying we didn’t want any.
We also had the free ticket when you purchase certain cereals, so we didn’t feel so bad paying for the pictures, however had we not had the offer it would’ve been a pretty expensive experience.
We’ll definitely visit some of the other dungeons.

What fun! Was scary to the appropriate degree for this scaredy cat, I almost backed out at the last minute but then my minor child couldn't go! they did a great job with the back story and acting aspect, engaging all of us in the real life tales of Edinburgh. I opted out of the last thing which was a simulated 'hanging' as they once did in Old Town, but my kid did it and he got a thrill from it. Appreciate that they had us all wear masks still even though the mask mandate has lifted somewhat, thank you. Would do this again for sure. Good job folks!
