The area

Neighbourhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

This distinguished , formal , Georgian garden square can be found at the west end of Edinburgh’s New Town. It was built mainly to the neoclassical designs of the illustrious 18th century architect Robert Adam , and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The townhouses surrounding the square have elegant facades , and Bute House, the official residence of the First Minister of Scotland can be found amongst them. In the centre of the square is the 30ft Prince Albert Memorial, depicting the Prince wearing a Field Marshall uniform and mounted upon a horse. It was sculpted by Sir John Steell, and unveiled in 1876. Sadly, there is no public access to the garden as all the gates are locked, so you can only peer through the railings. The delicate crocuses are presently peeping out in the park and add welcome colour to the scenery.

This was a pleasant area but, other than the architecture, there was no reason to visit. You might want to stay in Old Town.

This is somewhat plain looking formal square in Edinburgh. The center is a large green lawn, not accessible to the public, with a large nice statue of Prince Albert on horseback.

The surrounding buildings are in Georgian style, but otherwise uninteresting to look at. However, I didn’t learn any of their histories.

It isn’t a place I would recommend deliberately going to see.

This square has largely been maintained as it would have looked in Georgian Britain.
Amongst the elegant old buildings in the square there is one you can look round - note you can enter for free with an English National Trust card.

Designed by famous Scottish architect Robert Adam, and believed by many to be his finest work, Charlotte Square is undoubtedly the architectural high-point of the New Town, which is a World Heritage site.

One of the finest architectural set-pieces in Europe, the square was designed with the town houses on each side of the square as unified blocks, resulting in large and most impressive frontages.

With the attractive gardens in the centre, Charlotte Square is well worth a visit and a gentle stroll.

Charlotte Square is in the "New Town" area of Edinburgh and is just a short walk from Princes Street which is a focal point of the city.

It is a nice square with Georgian built houses surrounding it. There is some nice architecture to be enjoyed if you like that sort of thing. The green space in the area is open during the day but shuts late afternoon.

A nice area to visit if you want somewhere nice to sit down and relax just off the beaten track.
