These walks are designed by best selling historical author and award winning novelist J A Henderson. "The best of Edinburgh’s ghost tours" – Lonely Planet Guide. Combining history, humour and horror, the walk ends inside the Covenanter’s Prison in a locked section of a 16th century cemetery. This is the lair of the "McKenzie Poltergeist," the best-documented paranormal case in history. "Puts the city's other ghost tours in the shade"- Edinburgh Evening News

We booked online for the Double Dead tour with the city of the dead tour, we showed up at the stated time and met our tour guide Katie. This tour was the highlight of our trip to Scotland, the history and stories Katie told us throughout the tour where so interesting and spooky! It was awesome to have access to... More

Went on this tour a couple months back as part of my college trip and loved it! The guild took a small group of us into the most historic and paranormal places in Edinburgh and told the back stories in a brilliant way making puns when appropriate but was also historic. Would definitely do this again.

Our tour guide, IAN, was brilliant! We chose the Double Dead tour and Ian showed us round the underground vaults of the South Bridge and then Greyfriars cemetery. He knew so much about the history of Edinburgh and kept us entertained with funny stories and gruesome tales of Edinburgh's history! I don't want to give too much away but it... More

Went on the Double Dead walk last night with the missus and two kids. Started off in the vaults, it's the underground city of Edinburgh, gives an insight into the living conditions for the poor at that time. Our tour guide was Dave and I thought he was brilliant. Very informative and flung in a few jokes as well as... More

Took the underground vaults tour with our guide Stanley. He was very entertaining with his stories and informative as well. Tours went through a few underground vaults that were barely lit and snug for the large group that was with us. Many on the tour seemed to be uneasy with the dark tunnels, but it seemed pretty tame to us.... More

amazing, hilarious, terrifying! our tour guide Dave was awesome, incredible story teller and very funny. He had us laughing one minute and then screaming in fear the next. I was unsure how this night would unfold as we were a group of around 26 students, Dave had great control over our party and made sure everyone was safe and comfortable... More

I wisited with my friend the "underground city of dead" tour. The guide, Stanley, was funny, well prepared, hold the tour with enthusiasm, and told the facts with humour and drama. The lenght and the information on the tour was just right, in each pit stop/vault came a new story related to the place. For the rest of our holiday,... More

Intriguing historical info delivered through a witty, well-informed and engaging tour guide. I’m not a great fan of “ghost tours” per se, but tagged along on my own on this occasion, prompted by curiosity and the need to fill up some time while a footsore friend recovered from a morning’s trek up Arthur’s Seat. David gathered our group of about... More

My wife and I got a great recommendation from some friends back home (Canada) and so we decided to give it a look. I'll be honest I was skeptical about it, thinking it was going to be some corny money grab. To my surprise I was both informative and exciting hearing about the true horrifying underbelly of old Scotland. I... More

Did this tour tonight with my wife. Suggestion for anyone who wants to do the tour - take the time to book it - lots of people turned up and the tour was fully booked and they were turned away. Did the vaults and the grave yard, it's well worth an evening, when you finish its right next to grey... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
