- Aditya MWinchester, United Kingdom7 contributionsMusic, Whisky and A Good TimeGo there for an amazing atmosphere, a good selection of whisky and great live folk music. It's not a large pub which makes it feel all lovely and cosy. The people behind the counter and some of the locals are nice. Always worth a stop on a night out in Edinburgh.Visited December 2022Written 20 December 2022

The bar staff are all first class, fast, efficient and friendly. Great music enjoyed by locals and vast numbers of tourists from all over the world.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 May 2023
- Lizzy BAtlanta, Georgia4 contributionslocal experience, affordable pints and whisky, kind peopleWhat a special experience - the kind you hope to have when traveling somewhere. We were 3 Americans on a Monday night looking for a post-dinner, local experience. When we walked in to see gray hair tucked into an alcove, which turned out to be a dozen locals playing simple folk music... we felt like we had hit gold! So many instruments, they kept pulling them out of the basement... stopped the music to have a visiting Irishman sing an acoustic folks song. We were charmed beyond belief by this magical and friendly place. I almost didn't want to review it, worried it would be flooded with tourists, but it's a special, kind place and deserves your business.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 November 2023

Popped in with friends before going to an event across the road. To frankly be told it wasn’t our vibe and we then were refused service. Being a publican of a folk based, cask ale house I actually wanted to see what was on offer and dragged my friends with me to have a look. The barman was extremely rude and judgemental and definitely not an example of a good host.
Such a shame as I got recommended this place by a friend.

A small cosy pub with great selection of drinks. Went on a Thursday. Atmosphere was laid back, and there were a couple of people playing folk music. Definitely recommended!

Give the staff lessons in customer relations, I was with three other friends tonight 14/07/23, we were served a drink at 12.45am, then at 12.50am we were told to drink up our f**King drinks and get out by the rudest bar "lady" I've ever met. When challenged she said she was in charge so " drink up and get f**king out" in my opinion she had a serious mental problem. After I finished my drink she told me I was barred. I replied, it was not an issue as I or my friends will not be back. My advice is to avoid this place...

We had a really bad experience with the young barman. He was rude with really bad manners without a reason. A threatening look. My friend doesn’t know English and was recording a video and the barman told him not to take photos but my friend couldn’t understand. On the other hand the barwoman was really kind and helpful. I am wondering how a barman like this can work in a place like this. The beers were fantastic.

A disappointment. We went to hear a session and it was inaudible because of people talking loudly over it. The staff asked people to quieten down but it made no difference. It was busy but didn't feel very friendly. I don't know why people would go to a folk session venue to talk, rather than listen to folk music- there's plenty of other pubs you can yak in.

Less of a pub, more of a social club for a clique of local "musicians". Went with some out of town colleagues and was shocked at how unfriendly the staff and the punters were. I was actually embarrassed at being their hos., How this consistently makes the list of top 10 pubs in Edinburgh I'll never know. Should be in the list of Top 10 places with miserable, pretentious folk musicians. Go somewhere else, where the people are happy.

It’s a shame this used to be a great wee pub, first time I’ve been in for a while and the bar staff were rotten, rude, ignored non locals. Waited ages to get served whilst they chatted with their local pals.
