A great tour; highly recommended. Actors were captivating and held everyone's interest the entire trek. A variety of writers/poets were discussed with various recitals in between pub breaks. The last pub did not accommodate the group (disappointing as it was a cold night) but the two actors made the best of their scene in an adjacent alley. Overall a great... More

The actors (Ross & Kirsty) really were excellent - engaging a very diverse group and sharing their knowledge of Edinburgh's literary history in a very entertaining way. The pub stops were also much appreciated, and I imagine this is even better in warmer weather. A great balance of a mini pub crawl with a bit more than a taste of... More

I was in Edinburgh last May, 2013, and had the pleasure of taking this tour. The players are superb, the conveyance of literary history spot-on, and all locations visited were fascinating. It's a splendid way to learn a lot and have fun while doing so. Plus, the guides/players created an atmosphere of camaraderie at the start, which broke the ice... More

Had an excellent time on the literary pub tour. The guides were funny and knowledgeable. They recited the poetry of Burns and gave us interesting facts on Robert Lois Stevenson along with other authors. We visited about 4 pubs in all. The last pub was very busy though and we couldn't get it. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

Rick Steves is right, this is the most entertaining way to spend an evening in Edinburgh.Went to some great pubs and leaned a lot about Scottish literature and poetry in a very enjoyable fashion. Both our young "guides" were professionally trained actors and provided a real flair to the literature. We were in a group that included the Tourism Bureau... More

As two Academics we were impressed by the great balance between: historic knowledge & colourful exploits of historic/contemporary artists concerned. The standard of the actors was truly stunning. It gave enough info to wetten the pallete and 'wiki' more info and change reading list. I suggest to other less impressed parties that this was a live performance and therefore actors... More

We had a wonderful tour with Ross (Clart) and Keith (McBrain). SpentTwo hours walking through the streets of Edinburgh stopping at pubs, hearing the stories of Edinburgh literary greats with fun and quirky byplay between our charming hosts. Well done!

This event is not what you think it is; that is the first thing to know. Two actors perform/lecture on the greatest historical writers who have lived in or are from Edinburgh. If you want to know anything about contemporary authors, this tour is not for you. The evening is big on sitting around listening to the actors and really,... More

Today, a Thursday evening in October we wanted to take part in the Edinburgh Literary Pub Tour. We got to the place, the Beehive Inn, in time. First irritation was that there weren't any signs for the meeting point. The waiter in the pub told us to wait in a room on the second floor, which was dark and empty.... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
