Just spent a great Saturday night in this place with a group of mates. Best jukebox I've ever come across. The staff were fantastic and the atmosphere spot on - friendly and a great laugh - no hassles or bad attitudes from anyone in the place - just enjoying a great place to be. I'm now sat back at home... More

If you are looking for hard rock music, this is for you. The prices for drinks were pretty good. The service was good. The atmosphere was not what I was looking for though.

Stumbled across this wee gem on a trip to the capital. Great music and atmosphere and a decent selection of rum. Reasonable prices too will be back on our next trip east

One of the best Dukeboxes ever! Pool table! 1st class beers and spirits! Served up by brilliant bar staff!!! Same again? They know it! Varied characters join together with a common love for Rock and Roll!!! Just make sure you look down as you pass? It's in the basement.

Discovered the Black Bull on our first visit to Edinburgh trying to get our bearings. Could not of asked for a better place to find. Rock juke box, Bourbon menu and a Jack Daniels pool table. Staff friendly, clientele we found to be even friendlier. The cost of a round did vary even though we ordered the same 2 pints three... More

Hi Amy Delighted to hear you had such a great night. Sorry to hear that there was inconsistency with the cost of a round. I'm willing to wager you were drinking either Budweiser or Budvar if you were on pints. If not they may have been hitting the wrong dash button. Either way it's disappointing. If you're ever back in... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
