- JacquiandDavePortsmouth, United Kingdom128 contributionsThe BEST customer servicei took the tram to and from the airport as i was visiting my Aunt both trips were excellent. The assistants checking the tickets were well mannered and polite. The trams were comfortable and clean. However, I would like to congratulate you on having a colleague with the most wonderful customer service skills. His name is Omar and he was working on the 30th Jan. He was smiley and friendly. A chap had a problem with a ticket and he dealt with it efficiently. He helped an older lady who was pushing a wheelchair (i presume it was her husband who was in the wheelchair) He had a bit of banter and a laugh and a joke with the customers. Brilliant customer service. Give him a promotion or a pay rise he is a credit to you!!!Hi JacquiandDave, Thank you for taking the time to leave us your positive review and for your kind words regarding our colleagues - it's really appreciated! This enabled us to get to our hotel which was a 2 minute walk from the tram stop. We also visited the Royal yacht Britannia by tram, so convenient. We thought it was excellent value for money & loved looking out of the window at all the sights that we will hopefully visit next time.Hi Marion C, Many thanks for your kind words about our service! - Daniel S211 contributionsEasy to use, frequent servicesWe had a family ticket for 4 days, prepurchased about a month beforehand. This process was very straight forward and we had an online ticket (via PDF) within minutes! The tram goes from the Airport (at a surcharge) to Leith, servicing a lot of stops along the way. We were able to get the tram from the airport to a stop near our accommodation with little fuss. Plenty of bag racks too (we had 5 bulky suitcases that were stored with no issue, along with other travellers). There are ticket inspectors on each tram, or at least all the ones we caught. The tram service is frequent, and we never waited more than 10mins for a tram to come along. We used it extensively for our time in Edinburgh.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 April 2024

As a senior, luggage handling can be an issue, however the porter on board tram made this a non issue and he took care of my luggage, and made sure I knew when to get off. We were staying at the Premier Inn near Hermiston Gait and the journey to the city centre was only around ten minutes and the trams were every 5 to 10 minutes. Ticket machines at the tram stops were easy to use, but make sure you buy your tickets before boarding the tram as they do have ticket inspectors on board.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 May 2024

- Langtoon3Kirkcaldy, United Kingdom493 contributionsSunday TramGetting into the town centre is really easy. We parked at Ingleston Park & Ride and then got a day ticket each (£5 each) which got us around. It takes 30 mins to get into Princes Street. The Trams are busy, which shows there is a need for them. Getting back on, we used the stop at St Andrews Square - the tram was already packed at this point. We had forgotten the trams now ran all the way to Newhaven, which meant there was already a lot of passengers on board when the Tram arrived at our stop. The trams are functional, on time. Can't fault them. Gave us free parking for as long as we wanted to be up town too. We did gift our day tickets to another couple who had just arrived at the station as we headed back to our car. Probably not meant to do this, but it's nice to be nice!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 August 2024

Took the tram with my 8-year-old son today from the Gyle emit Haymarket. I’d taken the tram before pre-COVID but was surprised an adult return is now £3.80. So total price for the 2 of us was £5.70. Both journeys were late and both were overcrowded to the point of being dangerous. There is supposedly a conductor on board but no one was stopping people from cramming in the doors. Add to that the horrendous temperature and the fact there’s people chugging beer like there’s no tomorrow and we didn’t have a good journey at all. Gif home and saw we could’ve travelled by train for a total price of £3.35 from the nearby Edinburgh Park station. Will definitely do that in future. To top it off had to wait 20 mins for our tram home despite supposedly the trams running to a 7 minute frequency.

Hi Stephen W,
Many thanks for taking the time to review us.
We do run a service from every 7 minutes, although due to road congestion, particularly during the festival period, this may affect the frequency of service.
We apologise for the inconvenience and we hope to welcome you back on board soon.

The Edinburgh Tram has one terminus at the airport and another near the port. I used it on the second leg, from the center to the Britannia ship. You buy the ticket at the machine on the sidewalk, paying attention to the various fares. Once on board you don't have to stamp the ticket because a boy comes by to check. It is a comfortable and silent means of transport. Obviously, traveling by rail is also very punctual.

They spent all this money (reportedly £780 million) and got this? OK it's a tram where previously there was none but given how long it took to finish the project you'd think they would have worked out that they need to install a non-slip floor. Once it has dirt on it, it is close to lethal, especially when wet. And a strip of paper as a ticket that is then checked on the tram by a conductor with a pink pen? But only one way? Nobody bothered to check it on the way back even though there was a guy standing talking to the driver all the way.
And why are the instructions for tickets and all the announcements only in English? Does Edinburgh not expect to get any overseas visitors? Tickets only valid on the Tram - no exchange with buses or trains as you do in virtually every other city.
The weirdest thing of all was that the tram had no priority - it waited at traffic lights for buses and taxis. And boy does Edinburgh have a lot of large smelly diesel buses sitting on Princes Street.
It's a great idea of course and compared to paying for parking in the city, a very much better deal, but as an experience, hmm. Not frequent enough, will get very crowded at peak times.
Like everything else in Edinburgh, big expectations, poor delivery.

Hi lordofglencoe83662,
Many thanks for taking the time to review us.
I just wanted to touch on a couple of the points made in your review.
1. All our trams are equipped with non-slip flooring. We also put out special messages advising customers during adverse weather to take extra care when walking on the tram or on our platforms. Never the less, I will make sure to pass your comment on to our Operations department.
2. Depending on our staffing levels, there may not be a Ticket Service Assistant on board for the entire duration of the journey. We also have a number of trainee drivers and their 'minders' out on the line, which I suspect may be the case on the tram you were on, who must stay with the driver in the unlikely event that there is an emergency on board.
3. While our announcements are in English, each tram displays the current, next and last stop on our overhead displays. Moreover, we have screens and a full route map in each cab, alongside pictures, to aid passengers with their journey.
4. Certain tickets such as a Single, Return or Multi-Day are tram only but we also have a variety of tickets which can also be used on our sister company, Lothian Bus. These include, Day tickets, Ridacards and City Smart Cards. When purchasing train tickets and travelling to and from the airport, the likes of Trainline offers a combined Tram and Rail ticket. This can only be done as an add on when purchasing a train ticket though and not vice-versa.
5. When in the city centre, the tram line is on a public road and as such we must follow traffic laws to maintain the safety of all road users. While we have our own set of signals and traffic lights which recognise when a tram is waiting, to help maintain traffic flow, other vehicles may have right of way.
We look forward to welcoming you back on board with us soon.
Kind Regards,
Edinburgh Trams

Poor Customer Service, Avoid and Choose Another Form of Public Transport
We arrived by train from Glasgow and boarded at Edinburgh Park (five tram stops from the airport).
When we arrived at the tram stop, one of the machines was out of order, so we had to go over to the other machine.
There, we purchased two tram tickets labeled "Adult All Day Ticket," thinking everything was in order.
When the tram arrived, we boarded and were then met by an inspector who told us that we had purchased the wrong tickets. We needed the "Adult Airport Single" tickets, which meant we had to buy two additional tickets onboard the tram. The inspector then told us that we could simply contact Edinburgh Trams, and they would refund the incorrect ticket purchase.
When we contacted customer service, we were met by an arrogant customer service representative with a condescending tone, who explained that we should have known better and that it made no sense for us to have purchased the tickets we did. These could not be refunded according to the company's current policies.
After some discussion, "David" escalated the issue to his immediate supervisor.
A day later, we received an equally arrogant response from "Alice" as we had from "David."
It is entirely obvious that the wrong tickets were purchased, but the way this was handled by Edinburgh Trams shows poor customer service and little willingness to resolve a simple mistake.
This could have been resolved by us paying £5 extra onboard the tram, or by refunding the "All Day Tickets."
I work with customer relations and customer service, and I find this service utterly dreadful. Such a customer-unfriendly company is a disgrace and reflects poor management, in addition to arrogant customer service.
I recommend everyone who plans to use public transport in Edinburgh to consider other options like buses, trains, or taxis, because if you make a mistake with the best intentions, you will be met with zero understanding and will be left feeling swindled.

I rushed to get on the tram at Haymarket, was buying the ticket online but the app kept crashing or having issues with my payment, as apparently you can't buy just one ticket, you need to spend at least £4 for no reason at all.
Rushed on, asked the extremely rude conductor if I could buy a ticket and she replied that on board it's £10, or I should get off at the next stop, in the middle of nowhere.
I rushed to the stupid tram to arrive early at work, but arrived late thanks to this ridiculous scam, as I obviously didn't want to gift them £10 for nothing. The conductor also told me "you were literally standing close to 4 tickets machines", while I just managed to get on the tram on time, as I was running to get on it, I definitely wasn't standing anywhere near them, and if I had, I wouldn't have had time to get the ticket anyway, as the tram was about to close its doors.
There is no sign at the stop saying that you can't get a ticket on board, or at least if there is, it must be unnoticeable, as I didn't see any while rushing on, and in a city where you buy tickets on all other buses and trains, this scam is quite unexpected.
It should be illegal to do such a thing. Next time I'll wait for a bus.
I'll never get on a tram again.

Hi Trail67614400660,
Thank you for taking the time to review us.
Like other light rail operators, we operate a 'buy before you board' policy. Although, we do give passengers the option to disembark the tram and purchase the correct ticket to avoid the on-board fare where possible. This is to ensure that all passengers are travelling with valid tickets. Information on this can be found on our ticket machines as well as tram stop informational posters.
Our trams run from every 7-minutes which, can give our customers peace of mind that they can still buy their ticket before boarding a tram, without the need for rushing.
Nevertheless, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Kind Regards,
Edinburgh Trams

We had a terrible experience with the Edinburgh tram system. My husband and I purchased two tickets to travel from the airport to the city center, paying £7.50 each. However, we mistakenly got off at the wrong station, which we thought was City Centre but turned out to be something like Park Central. Realizing our mistake, we quickly boarded the next tram. On that tram, the ticket inspector checked our tickets and told us they had already been used and we couldn’t use them again. We explained that we had gotten off at the wrong station and were not familiar with the area. Unfortunately, he was extremely rude, refused to listen, and told us to get off and buy new tickets.
This was, without a doubt, the worst experience we’ve had in Edinburgh. We’ve traveled to many countries, always paid for our tickets, and followed the rules, but we’ve never encountered such rude behavior. We’re really disappointed

A wide range of stops from Edinburgh Airport to New Haven. Daily tickets are very cheap, easy to use and a fantastic and reliable way to visit various landmarks in the city on a jump on jump off basis. The tickets can also be used on local buses. We saved a fortune on taxi and bus fares. A great service, great fun and highly recommended!

What a difference the trams make to visiting Edinburgh!
We have always stayed in Leith so it was great that the trams are now fully operational down to Newhaven. The tram is now a no-brainer way of travelling into and out of Edinburgh.
An all day ticket for £5 means you can travel on any tram or bus in the city area (only excluding the airport) so this was a cheap and convenient way to see the city. The trams run every 7-10mins, very clean, comfortable. You no longer need to drive a car to travel into the city centre and worry about the cost of parking.
Every city should have a tram service like this. It was also good to see it so busy with locals as well as tourists.

It hardly ever seems to run on time in busy periods making it no more reliable than a bus to get to work. It's often overcrowded, slow and is expensive.
Reduce the price and run on time and it would be a viable option.

Taking the tram from and to the airport is probably the easiest way. Takes about 35 minutes, costs 7.50 GBP one way, bus costs 5.50 but the tram runs smoother and more pleasant. Train means a change

Hi Ann H,
Many thanks for your question regarding Lothian Buses. Mobility Scooters are unfortunately not permitted onboard the bus unless they can be folded safely and stored on the ground in the wheelchair space against the “ironing board” back rest.
We do however have two spaces available on each tram for mobility scooters!
Customers must hold a valid mobility scooter permit to board our trams. If you would like to apply for one, our Customer Relations Officers are more than happy to help you with this. For information on how to contact us, please visit our website.
We look forward to welcoming you on board soon!

We bought an open return ticket on 27th October assuming that meant we could use it to return to the airport twice days later. But then we saw adverts for multi day tickets? So what is an open return ticket?
Written 28 October 2019
Hello Hettys. Brian is correct, an open return is valid for two journeys only, from and back to the Aiport, while the multi-day ticket gives you unlimited travel on the tram network.

Hi: we are flying into Scotland in September and wondering if the Tram will quickly get us to Gateway to catch a train to Inverness. We have not been to Scotland before, and wondering if it will be easily marked at airport and then easy to identify when at Gateway to get off tram? Should we buy tickets in advance, or is there normally enough open seats on trains and trams that tickets do not need to be purchased in advance? Sorry for all the random questions, but any advice is welcome.

Hi, You can easily buy tickets from our staff or ticket machines at the tram platform which is a short 3 minute walk from the terminal building. Trams run every 7-10 minutes, they carry up to 250 passengers and the journey to Edinburgh gateway takes 8 minutes. There are signs and announcements on the tram at every stop. I hope ypou enjoy travelling with us.

I am planning on commuting to Napier university via tram from Ingilston park and ride to Bankhead. Are parking spaces readily available at 8-8.30 am.
Or will everyday be a risk of possibly not getting a space.

Hi Clojoe, the park and ride is not managed directly bu Edinburgh Trams, but you can call the front desk at 0131 555 6363 who have a much clearer picture of traffic flow. In my experience, it gets busy on weekday mornings, however you should be able to find a parking space.

Hi my wife has a small mobility scooter , and a small dog (cairn terrier ), is it possible to get on and off the trams, can she stay on her scooter on the tram ? And are dogs allowed on. We are planning a trip in April and the trams look like a great way to have a look around. Regards Keith and Jayne Payne.

Hi, I am travelling to Edinburgh with 17 & 11 year old sons for 5 days. On a budget.
Will need to get from the airport to the centre then travel around sites and attractions. Castle and Zoo are top of the list. Any suggestions welcome :)
Is there a family ticket for bus/tram?
Thank you

Hi Pauline
As others have mentioned there is a £8.50 Family Dayticket covering 2 adults and up to 3 children aged 5-15 which gives you unlimited travel on trams and Lothian Buses excluding the Airport.
However, to travel from and back to the Airport you will need individual single or open return tickets (the latter offer much better value.)
If you are staying in the city centre, you will see that most attractions are within walking distance, so you might not need additional travel every single day. However the Family Dayticket will be perfect for visiting the zoo or venturing further afield.
