The Edinburgh Military tattoo is an annual series of Military tattoos performed at the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and International military bands and display teams. This is held during the month of August each year which coincides with the Fringe Festival and International Festival. This really is a must when visiting Edinburgh and really provides for the experience of a lifetime. Dress warmly for the outdoors as the seating in the esplanade is uncovered.

Never mind wearing nothing under your kilt! You can't consider yourself a true Scotsman until you've been to the Tattoo at least once in your life. Still as spectacular and thrilling for anyone else from around the world. But certainly hits a patriotic nerve for...More

I have need to the military tattoo twice and would highly recommend you to visit during this time if you into arty performance. The streets are alive with hints and taste of what is available. Accommodation is booked up early and expensive so boom early....More

Wasn't completely blown away by it. I suppose I expected it to be more Scottish but it was quite British. Makes sense with the military aspect of it. A tremendous effort by everyone involved and it ran seamlessly - as far as I could tell....More

This is an annual event in Edinburgh during the festival, a must see. Highly recommended. Performers from different commonwealth countries. Held outdoors at Edinburgh castle. Make sure you take a rain coat/umbrella, just incase.

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the

Since the seats are not numbered (just sections), is it first come first serve? How early do we need to be there (Monday 9PM show) to get better seats in the main stands? Usually people prefer higher or lower seats?

Hi there. All seats within the amphitheater are numbered and your ticket should have the section, row and seat number which you have purchased. We recommend that you are in your seat at least 15 minutes before the show... More

Hi - looking at going to the Military Tattoo - is it the same show every night? Would you recommend going once or twice? Thanks!

Response from EdinTattoo | Property representative |
Hi Nicolas. The Tattoo is the same every evening with the exception of an extended fireworks display on Saturday nights. While most customers attend once during the month, there are those who come to multiple shows and are... More
