On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the town's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews - the focal point of the Church in medieval Scotland. Today explore the underground 16th century siege mine and countermine and the bottle dungeon. There is a visitor centre with exhibition.

We where of course in St.Andrews to play golf, but we found time to do some site seeing as well. This ruin of St Andrews castle was one of the first places we viseted (After a trip inside the Golf Museum of course). Interesting enough, good view og some fine history of a siege. You can even visit the tunel... More

We went to visit the castle while staying in St Andrews. My daughters are 10 and 12. It was a cold but dry day. We stayed for about an hour. There is a small exhibition that gives you a short history about the castle and the town. It is informative. Just the right amount of detail. The highlight of the... More

As many reviews suggest it is all about History. On a different angle, the beach nearby is lovely to spend a day with loads of restaurants with friendly staff, ideal for a family/couples day out!

We visited on the last day of the year and it was bitterly cold. We were welcomed by Sophie who was very helpful and knowledgeable about the property. There's a small exhibition of the history of the castle and a gift shop. The castle is atmospheric and in such a lovely spot. Some great photo opportunities. Be sure to visit... More

As this is a few hundred of years old, it does offer a different view. People used to be shorter back then and they used to build these lovely structures close to the sea. People living here were in less danger to be attacked, unless Jack Sparrow came from the sea.

St Andrews is full of history and there is a lot to see, but I suggest you put the castle (or the remains of it) on the top three of your list of things to see. You'll learn a lot about the history of from a visit here and it is definitely worth the entrance fee.

Title says it all, to just be around the ruins of such a historical place will bring goosebumps to your arms to imagine all that has taken place right where you stand. Maybe to some it is just an old building but to me this is knowledge.

Particularly fasinated by the siege tunnels and counter mines. A really unique experience. This site is a ruin but there is a good range of information signs and the visitor centre included an informative exhibition. I did notice that all info is given only in English - and a large proportion of visitors during our visit had a first language... More

spectacular clifftop setting and well preserved historic ruin. Within easy walking distance from town centre, beaches or caravan parks. A must see.
