On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the town's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews - the focal point of the Church in medieval Scotland. Today explore the underground 16th century siege mine and countermine and the bottle dungeon. There is a visitor centre with exhibition.

Title says it all, to just be around the ruins of such a historical place will bring goosebumps to your arms to imagine all that has taken place right where you stand. Maybe to some it is just an old building but to me this is knowledge.

This site is a ruin but there is a good range of information signs and the visitor centre included an informative exhibition. I did notice that all info is given only in English - and a large proportion of visitors during our visit had a first language... More

If (like me) you like medieval history then this is a must (not sure the wife was so taken with it). Very informative. I visited on a crisp cold sunny November day. If it was a normal scottish day you are going to get wet as there is very little cover....its a ruin after all. A visit is a must... More

I visited St Andrews Castle yesterday whilst on a day trip. I think it is worth mentioning that it is possible to buy a ticket which entitles you to visit two attractions - The Castle and the Cathedral. This dual ticket will save you money and also allows you to climb St Rule's Tower at the Cathedral site. If you... More

This was a most scenic spot right on the ocean beach. It is a very breath taking view. There was a beautiful walk way up to the castle a long the shore.

When we went to the castle the first thing we did was bishop dungeons, you went down some narrow stairs into a dark room. There was a big hole in the ground full of money. Then we went into the kitchen and all the food was stone. After we went into the kitchen we went to the mine. The mine... More

when we went to the St. Andrews castle we first went to the cell that had a big under the ground bucket thing, it was filled with loads of money, gold and precious items from the olden days! Next was the cell on the left which had a tiny little crumby Windows that had bars at the end of it.... More
