On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the town's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews - the focal point of the Church in medieval Scotland. Today explore the underground 16th century siege mine and countermine and the bottle dungeon. There is a visitor centre with exhibition.

Although it isn't the most amazing castle I've ever visited, it is free and the view of the beach is very cool.

What a fantastic place to visit. Full of character and lot's of nooks and crannies to look into. Best bit was going down the tunnels but be sure to duck and don't wear your most expensive clothes and definitely no heels. And it was sunny to top it all off! Great fun

Although this castle is in ruins, we still enjoyed our visit very much. It sits right on the coast. Going down into the tunnels under the castle was fun. The signs all around were very helpful to learn about what we were seeing.

Early thoughts were that this was going to be dated, as the information boards outside the railings were faded with time and hardly readable, but the history came alive inside, along with views from the great location. A siege in historical times had an attempt to be broken through a mine (tunnel) but those inside managed to dig down and... More

I have not been in St Andrews castle for many years, my daughter and I spent a lovely afternoon here. It starts with entry through the visitor centre, easy to navigate and informative. Staff at reception lovely, happy at work which sets you up nicely for your visit. Easy stroll on a gentle slope out to the castle ruin. Information... More

The information signs and displays made this otherwise ruin and pile of rocks interesting. We have membership in Historic Scotland, so it was free to us as well as the cathedral. Ok for a quick stop.

Doesn't compare well with many of the other castles you can visit in Scotland. Highlights are the beautiful views over the water and an informative learning area before you visit the ruins.

Recently while visiting Dundee, my wife and I drove over to St Andrews to take in the sights. Our first stop was St Andrews Castle. It is on the Scotland Explorer Pass program so if you have a pass, entrance is free. The castle ruins are not large and even with reading everything in the museum, you can see it... More

The indoor exhibition was well put together and interesting. The outdoors had explanation along different points as well indicating what had been there and how it would've looked like. The views of the sea were beautiful. Must explore the tunnels!!
