Overview
More
St Andrews Castle is the ruins of the castle of the Archbishops of St Andrews, dating in part from the 13th century. On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the city's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews and the focal point of the church in medieval Scotland. Explore the underground 16th-century siege mine and counter-mine, and the 'bottle dungeon', one of the most infamous castle prisons in medieval Britain, which was cut out of the solid rock. John Knox and George Wishart may have been imprisoned in this dank and airless space, and this is where its believed Cardinal Beaton’s body was kept when he was murdered in 1546. Good one hour distraction from golf. I enjoyed reading the history of the place. Pity erosion and man have destroyed most of the place.

There is so much history embedded in this castle; it was fascinating to learn about the changes over the centuries! The weather cooperated and we walked all over the area.

Fabulous if all too brief visit. The mine and counter mine one of the best things I have ever seen in a castle!

There is not much left of the castle, as with the Cathedral, but there is an interesting historical display in the visitors' centre and the underground tunnels are a must see. These are 50 metres of the siege tunnel and counter tunnel dug by defenders....More

I love castles and if its' in ruins--all the better! Combine this with the cathedral ruins and you will be in "ruin heaven"! The grounds are not very big, so you could probably explore in an hour or so. Hopefully, it won't be raining. Then...More

How breathtaking to walk through the ancient walls of this castle. So easily we were captivated by the sheer beauty, capturing our imagination of ages gone by, Kings, queens, a way of life few would have experienced. Beautifully maintained, easily walked. Lynda

St Andrews Castle is located at the eastern end of the town, adjacent to the cathedral and about 15 minutes walk from the first tee on the Old Course. It is a ruin with links going way back to the start of the last millennium....More

This was a great exhibition of setting the scene prior to going outside to seeing the remains of the Castle. We were glad that we had been to Dunfrmline the day before as there were a number of references to its Castle. It was a...More

We were in Scotland for a week. I toured the ruins for something to do while my husband golfed. It was ok but you can see most of it from the road outside the fence. Seen one ruin, seen most!

Castles are all over Britain, mostly ruined, and most standing in an isolated and romantic kind of splendour. And most of us think we know the stories behind them! The occupied ones are a boon to their owners, in the income they produce; but their...More
