About
Scotland's most visited art gallery and the centre for Glasgow's extensive modern and contemporary art collection. Found in the heart of Glasgow in Royal Exchange Square, GoMA is FREE to enter. GoMA is part of Glasgow's civic museum service and provides a thought-provoking programme including displays of local and international artworks from the City’s collection alongside temporary exhibitions and events with artists. There is also a permanent display that charts the history of the building. Have a look at our website for the full programme. There's also an opportunity to visit a great shop, lovely library with free internet access/PCs and cafe. Outside the gallery sits the statue of the Duke of Wellington that is often adorned by a traffic cone. Sometimes confused for being an art installation that the Gallery is responsible for, the cone(s) on Wellington's statue are placed by daring passers-by, usually very late at night. It seems to have been going on for about 30 years.

- gingerdad1Kendal, United Kingdom171 contributionsIf it’s raining it’s freeWhat can I say. It’s amazing what rubbish they can define as art. So glad it was free Would love to learned more about the building and its past built on the lives of slaves and others. But it’s just full of crap art that I’m sure the artists couldn’t believe someone would pay for. Thanks for your visit and feedback. Like all museums and galleries, not just modern and contemporary art ones, we, like you, acknowledge that the displays may not be to everyone's taste. GoMA is unique in Glasgow in that it has to balance care and display of the city's collection within an iconic, historic building (a tourist attraction in it's own right) with providing a thought-provoking programme including displays of local and international artworks from the City’s collection alongside temporary exhibitions and events with artists. We concentrate on art from post-1945. As with many local authority/municipally-funded museums and galleries we have to use our budgets wisely and provide as much variety as we can whilst retaining free admission. Nonetheless, we hope, visitors find the iconic, centrally-located building of interest. There is also a permanent display that charts the history of the building across the Balconies called Stones Steeped in History that talks about the connections to chattel slavery - perhaps you missed this? And we have a number of original craft commissions inside and outside the building by artists such as Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely and Tim Stead. GoMA is part of Glasgow's civic museum service and we do have a changing programme of museums' collection and loaned-in exhibitions and associated public programme. We hope that next time you visit you may find something more to enjoy. - Anne MKemnay, United Kingdom223 contributionsGood way to while away an hour or so in central GlasgowIt’s free and has a pleasant enough cafe and library in the basement. The art on display was modern. There was a display of the history of the building but feel a lot more effort could be put into enabling visitors to see the interesting historical architecture but featuring the art displayed. Thanks for your visit and feedback. I loved the statue in front of it, the facade design by Niki de Saint Phalle and the library inside. I was pretty sleep-deprived and waiting for my hotel check-in, so it was great to find a quiet, free place where I could relax and wait a little. Thanks for your visit and review. glad that you found us and were able to relax.Written 31 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 May 2024
- BeanyExplorerLondon, United Kingdom349 contributionsReally not worth the time and effort…..sorry!This is a stunning building, exceptional to be fair, but the art or lack of art really is a shame, disappointing to be fair! Having visited many galleries world wide this has to go down as the worst! I am trying to be fair and subjective in my review having read the other comments and GoMA’s responses, but it really is hard to be anything less than critical. The best bit is outside the museum and this is art by accident - Duke of Wellington and the cone(s). I don’t know whether this is due to lack of investment in the arts by Glasgow or the Scottish Government, but I’d stick with going to Kelvingrove Museum, if art or museums are your thing! Sorry!?!Thanks for your visit and feedback. Like all museums and galleries, not just modern and contemporary art ones, we, like you, acknowledge that the displays may not be to everyone's taste. - DeniseLairdEdinburgh, United Kingdom99 contributionsLove this building but not too impressed with the exhibition that was on.I have been to this museum before but on this occasion I was not very keen on the exhibition by Enzo Camacho and Ami Lien. Don’t get me wrong the art on paper and from natural materials were very interesting and done well but I feel there wasn’t too much to see in my opinion. I feel the sheets with projected images took up too much space and would have appreciated more of the artworks on the wall. Thanks for your visit and feedback. - liverpool1023London, United Kingdom1,250 contributionsStretched very thinYou would like to be more encouraging but really this does represent a missed opportunity. The museum needs a curator - some of art work is simply not up to scrub in terms of quality and the space is used I a rather random manner. It needs a small high quality permanent collection to anchor itself. A great pity because the actual space in the old Royal Exchange building is awesome. Thanks for your visit and feedback. I agree with other reviewers about what a gem this place is, right in the heart of the city centre. I'm not very knowledgeable about art but found the galleries enjoyable and all the staff members were smiley, which makes a difference when you're in such a space. There was lots of information about the different art on display which helped to contextualise it and aid appreciation. There was a good variety too, of different media and styles, so would certainly recommend a wander around!
There is a lift for all floors and at the top we found some portable stools, which were very much appreciated! It can be hard though to manage carrying a stool, sitting, getting up again... So more permenant seating particularly on the top floor gallery would be welcome.

Interesting gallery organised over a number of levels. Features video and mixed media works as well as paintings. The gallery is clearly learning how to operate mid-Covid, with an overly zealously enforced one way system and a lack of seating throughout. This marred the visit for us to a certain extent - and we are by far not the least able of guests. The Covid risks of sharing seats needs to be weighed against the gains of being able to experience art in its fullest... And ensuring art is accessible to all.

My wife and I had the pleasure of visiting the GOMA in Glasgow for the first time to see the Banksy exhibition and what a wonderful experience it was. We knew that it would be popular as we could not get a booking on line and decided to chance getting a ticket at the box office. We were lucky and right from the start it was so well organised. Entry times were at 15 minute intervals and the staff were very efficient and the queue to enter moved swiftly. We had plenty of time to view all the exhibits thanks to the fact that you snaked your way through rather than having to go to various rooms. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The staff were very pleasant and professional and we will certainly visit this art museum again.

The Gallery of Modern Art is an art museum in Glasgow. Beautiful neoclassical building was built in 1778. The mosaic on the facade, tower and dome are magnificent. It now houses a museum of modern art. On three floors you walk between art forms, photographs, sculptures, painting. There's a good library downstairs to have a sit and read on a rainy day. Moreover, the staff was very nice and helpful. Worth visiting for the building itself, the library and for coffee in the cafe. Easily accessible on foot. And it's free. Great place to visit.

I was so excited to see Cut and Run and there was high expectations that this was a slick and well drilled operation and first impressions were good but once you pass the compulsory phone in a locked bag zone, things immediately went down hill.
You walk in to back of the queue from the previous time slots and then stand and wait in this darken corridor which creates and an air of claustrophobia. You’re then stuck in this never ending corridor of bodies and slowly you move forward waiting for your turn. There was slight relief when you enter the main room and you break out of the continuous throng of bodies. Sadly I had enough at this point and moved through the main room to rejoin yet another line of people, herded into another corridor of despair and I longed for some fresh air and daylight.
Cut and Run shows you the inner workings and thought processes of Banksy and the highlight was the creative work of ‘Love is in the Bin’ but this was all tarnished by a poor exhibition design layout, there was little to no room to really appreciate his work
An extremely poor experience overall but this was the wrong venue for this exhibition.

GoMA needs a new curator because this display of tired and lifeless ‘art’ is embarrassingly awful.
Are abstact images projected onto curtains really still contemporary in 2024? That idea was dull 40 years ago - who truly thinks it has any relevance today?
The rest of the gallery was sparsely populated with work that a Foundation Art student would reject. Not a single item felt contemporary.
What a waste of space and a missed opportunity. Dull, dull, dull.
My advice - take the train to Edinburgh. It’s only £16 return and in less than an hour you can be visiting their outstanding galleries and museums.
Scotland has some great places to visit. This is not one of them.

Good gallery with a range of different types of artworks considering it's size. I'd say it's ideal for those who maybe haven't been to any modern art galleries before or students studying art as it is free. We didn't take too long to get around it probably about an 1hr maybe an 1 1/2hrs. However it had some good little exhibitions. You could probably spend longer there. The main gallery itself is a work of art. If you're visiting the city it's an easy thing to do although if you have kids I'd say they would find it a bit boring.

We enjoyed a visit to the Gallery of Modern Art. Like most museums in Glasgow, GoMA is free and operated by GlasgowLife (i.e., funded by Glasgow Council). It houses a thoughtful collection of modern art in a variety of media. The artwork is supported by clear interpretation which goes beyond the name of the artist and title of the work to provide some context.
We particularly liked the museum's support of local artists, including non-professionals. Works displayed in "Thistles and Dandelions", a temporary exhibition, highlighted women's history and contributions to their households and communities.
At least two new exhibitions are planned to open in 2021 and we hope to return to see them.

I was charging my laptop from one of those floor plugs and I had not closed up the lid back into place because I didn't know how. this didn't worry me because my friend and I were seated near the very end of the lib section. After about 10min, a man walked from the other end of the room, went and unplugged my laptop charger and threw it hard on the floor. He said loudly. you cannot charge from here. When I asked him why, he said he said I was not allowed. I asked him why he didn't stop me when I was plugging it in, and we had locked eyes when I was plugging- which he later said he was on phone and hadn't seen me do it.. He said firmly that he was the security. "Sorry love you are not allowed to charge from here love."
I asked him what his name and he covered his badge and it's that point when I asked for another staff member for the manager.
Manager was kind enough to come and also see the socket which she apologised that the sockets were not good enough for use and also that they were not covered. She then walked with me back to the reception where the rest of staff members were, and we spent about 15minutes at the least resolving the issue.
This was humiliating because after my friend came to give his part of the story, was the first time the security man admitted he had actually dropped my charger hard on the floor as he disconnected. The manager after resolving the case Infront of everyone including other library users, said sorry and asked me whether I was happy with everything which ofcourse at this point I wasn't.
Please note, there no one point where this security man apologised even after portraying me as a liar and proving he's the one that lied- which the manager witnessed.

Any time I’m in Glasgow city center I pop in here for a visit. With such a good location it’s easy to visit when you’re out for lunch or shopping. There’s a cafe and a nice shop too and it’s great that entry is free.
This is a small gallery so you’ll be out in an hour. There’s always something interesting to see, even if it’s not your cup of tea. There are often new exhibits and displays so each time you’ll something new. The baking itself is great to walk round, I love the stained glass windows.
The only real negative is that it closes at 5 o’clock. It would be good if the gallery was open later.
