About
The Hunterian Art Gallery boasts one of the most distinguished public art collections in Scotland with works ranging from Rubens and Rembrandt to the Scottish Colourists and Glasgow Boys. It also features an outdoor sculpture courtyard with a small display of modern works by British artists, one of the world’s best collections of the work of James McNeill Whistler, the largest single holding of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and The Mackintosh House.

    Amazing Gift Shop
Unfortunately, we arrived at the gallery too late to enjoy the extensive collection. But we were able to peruse the gift shop, and wow, were we impressed. They have numerous unique items and we purchased a beautiful Mackintosh stained glass piece, which is now proudly displayed in our home.

    Worthwhile, but....
A return visit. Would still recommend the gallery and especially Mackintosh House. However, sadly fewer Whistlers are now displayed than previously and painting labels (which are not sadly included in first two rooms) have a very small type face making them hard to read, especially given lighting.

    Great little art gallery
Called in on after walking up from Central station. Decent little gallery not the biggest and when we called in they had just closed down one of the special exhibitions. Enjoyable hour spent round and for any art decco/ macintosh fans I guess visiting the macintosh house recreation would be an essential.

Humterian Art Gallery & Mackintosh House
This is a short walk from the Kelvingrove museum (10 minutes). Free admission. So glad we made the effort to visit. Some quality paintings on display, old masters and modern. Took one hour to look around. We also went to the Mackintosh House (admission charge). Oh wow, fantastic to see the original furniture and interior designs. Its not really suitable for children as you are not allowed to touch the furniture. Mackintosh has left a design legacy that is known around the world. We didn't have time to visit the Hunterian museum.

Interesting art collection with a few standout pieces. But the display is absolutely maddening: the labels next to each piece are printed in a small font in a pale colour, on a background colour that mirrors the wall colour, so that they are nearly impossible to read. On our visit, each room had about a half dozen visitors, and all of us had our faces about an inch away from the labels, peering and squinting and trying to read them. This is just ridiculous - Hunterian, please improve the labelling.

I really enjoyed visiting this gallery. I have mixed views on the "experimental" approach to displaying the art. I didn't enjoy the first room so much, the booklets provided didn't seem to match what I could see and while I could see the logic behind not displaying the information, I personally found this a barrier to the experience. I thought the "pairing" room, where art was displayed with a partner, was really interesting and I feel I learned a lot from the information on display. Efforts made to challenge our assumptions about what makes "good" art, which was really refreshing.
My suggestion would be that the information was quite small so a larger text would be helpful. Some rooms had benches but others didn't. A staff member very kindly got me a portable chair- which are great but not the easiest to manoeuvre around as you walk so more benches please! :) I was asked to use the lockers for my bag, which I was fine with, but had to ask for help with unlocking it and I don't think I'm alone in finding them confusing- better instructions for the lockers are needed. Toilets are available by the lockers, which can be accessed on the lower floor by lift or stairs.

the gallery would have been excellent withoutout the original house inside the purpose built outer shell but there is so much to see. there are more Whsitelers than i have ever seen in one pace and neatly displayed and set with other paintings to highlight points being made. Colourists and some masters plus exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable staff.

As well as the Mackintosh House, this lovely gallery houses some of my favourite portraits and Whistler paintings. Bus stops right outside. No cafe though, so if you are in need of sustenance, pop across the road to the University Postgraduate Centre which has a sweet little cafe open to all.

As others have noted as well, the presentation of the art in this gallery is unusual and not only did it not work for us, we found it quite annoying.
Empty spaces on the walls waiting for the next great piece to present itself. Really?
That said, there are some good pieces and plenty to interest here...so wouldn't put anyone off going.
If you think skilful curating should help people to enjoy what's on offer, you might not be a fan either. If you're ok with being preached at and with gimics, you might agree with the curators here that they've found a ground breaking formula.
The Mackintosh House is worth a look if you're a fan of his work.

I was basically clueless about Charles Rennie Mackintosh before this trip but learned a great deal from the gallery and house tour. A particular worker, Nigel, was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable that we gained much more appreciation from the back stories. What gorgeous modernist/art nouveau aesthetics! The Hunterian Gallery was also a nice collection.

I knew I wanted to see the Antonine wall exhibit, but we really had a good time viewing the other collections; the medical equipment, the fossils...what a great eclectic bunch of exhibits. We also had a lovely time with the museum docent, she really helped enhance our visit.
