- lapsyboyCleethorpes, United Kingdom48 contributionsBest museum in GlasgowQuite unbelievable how this boat has been restored and the access you are given around the vessel is awesome. The fact that it is free is staggering, there is some great video in the hold and the Captain’s quarters are not to be missed. Combine this with a cocktail at the Anchor Line bar in the city centre for the historic shipping experience of luxury cruises.Sounds like you had a great day out, thanks for your review!Written 14 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 October 2023
- Andy CKingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom48 contributionsBrilliant time here.Fantastic museum. One of the best I have been to. Fantastic array of transport from trains, cars, motorcycles, cycles, trams etc. the museum also has a street where there are old style Glasgow shop. I spent about 3 hours at this museum and probably could have spent more. I would definitely recommend this museum as a must place to visit when in Glasgow. The museum is actually free though you can donate. There is a card scan where you can donate £5. The £5 is definitely worth the money. Thanks very much for your review, and for your kind donation!Written 14 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 October 2023
- Thomas GAmsterdam, The Netherlands1,876 contributionsSurprisingly goodThe Riverside museum is very cool, which I did not expect. There were many cars, trams and more. You can even get in several trams and subways. The highlight for me was the street, which portrayed a street in the 1920s, where you can enter several shops and a bar with information. The outside of the museum is also very impressive.Great to hear you were pleasantly surprised, thanks for the review!Written 14 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023

- Sandi RInverness, United Kingdom6 contributionsFREE activity to do when in GlasgowGreat visit! Very informative and plenty things in interact with! Very clean throughout. Best thing is it's FREE! There is a wee cafe but I noticed there were several pick-nick areas with benches and families eating food they had brought with them. This is nice to see as it can be expensive eating out all the time. Gift shop was also well stocked. There were buses, but we got the train from Glasgow Central to Patrick and was only a 5-10 min walk to the museum, signposted as you leave the train station. Thanks so much for coming along, we're delighted to hear you enjoyed your day!Written 14 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 October 2023
- vickykksaKuala Lumpur, Malaysia285 contributionsCars, planes, bikes, trains and The Tall Ship!Visited the Riverside Museum, a fascinating place that you get to go into for FREE! It was really interesting, seeing all these different modes of travel and the history behind them. I didn't see so much of the museum itself because I found myself at the door to the Tall Ship and ended up in there for so long, I had to miss the rest of the museum! The Tall Ship was another fascinating exhibit. The story of its life, and how it was brought to this site, to be refurbished and opened to visitors, is a testament to the foresight of the people concerned. It was amazing to walk all over the ship including the vast hold, There are videos playing in the hold, telling stories of the history of the ship and its occupants. The log of one of the young boys who signed on as apprentice was also on display, giving a glimpse into his life. The cramped crew quarters contrasted greatly with the luxurious one of the captain, complete with bathtub and fine china! Also have to say, the staff were really friendly. As I left, I was trying to figure out how to get to my next destination, and the security guard at the entrance took the trouble to come out with me and point me in the right direction. Altogether a very well spent morning, now I need to make another trip one day to really explore the museum proper! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a nice review, please come back and visit us again soon!Written 14 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 October 2023

- BonnieRed850Huntingdon, United Kingdom578 contributionsBrought back some memoriesIt was a wet day in Glasgow so a visit to the Riverside Museum seemed a good idea, and we were not wrong. For day visitors to the city like us, the museum is easily accessed via the Metro and a ten minute walk from Patrick station. Entry is free and there is a great variety of things to see. From old cars from the 60’s to children’s toys, it is all here. I lost count of the number of times I said, “Oh, I remember those.” It was also nice to see and read about the former shipyards that occupied the site. We didn’t get to board the ship in the dock as it was raining so hard, but I wish we had. All in all, we had a good time which cost us nothing, so what’s not to like! Thanks very much for your lovely review! - Brad DPlymouth, United Kingdom68 contributionsTop MuseumGreat experience from start to finish. It was like a tardis as we walked in. We weren't expecting there to be much to see , but we were so wrong after every corner there more and more. We both thoroughly enjoyed it. There were the usual school groups but they weren't in our way at all and were all well-behaved, the coffee shop on the top floor was lovely with a nice view, all staff were welcoming and answered any questions we had. We will definitely be back. Thanks so much for your lovely review!Written 14 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 November 2023
- WisdenPompey102 contributionsMore Than You Might ExpectWent there expecting the visit to be a couple of hours. Spent a lot more time going round all the exhibits. Whilst transport is the main theme there were streets and shops to explore. Cafe excellent. Whilst it is not that close to the centre of Glasgow there are, I believe, bus links. We took a train to Partick, also on the subway line, and had about a 10 minute walk. Signposting not great though. Well worth a visit but make sure you give yourself enough time. Thanks so much for your nice review!Written 22 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 November 2023

This museum is free to enter but would be well worth paying£5 to come in. There is a lovely street of old shops to explore. And if a steam train buff some lovely trains , a amazing collection of bikes and a wonderfull funeral hears pulled by horses. And every form of transport. The café is nice ,soup was thick and good with fresh roll.
A excellent place to visit.

What an interesting museum to visit, with all forms of transport to look at, from Cars, trains, trams, bicycles, skateboards etc. A street with old shops the interiors actually transported to the museum to show how it was originally. It has a restaurant on the ground floor (which we didn't go In) and a little Cafe on the 1st floor, which apparently makes the best coffee, I had a green tea and a lovely biscuit, made fresh with raspberry and lemon mmm. The best bit for me was the free tour and out Guide Jean was amazing, born and bred in Glasgow, she was full of stories and Information, and made it really enjoyable. We were lucky enough to be the only ones who took up the offer with this tour slot, so we had her to ourselves. We were like old friends and was sad to see her go after spending time chatting. I would recommend this museum for all the family, and there were quite a lot of toddlers there today, which was nice to see. The museum itself is free entry and there is a ship outside you can go onto that is also free but the weather was awful today so we decided not to go onboard. Definitely ask for Jean to be your guide and you won't be disappointed. Thank you Jean you made our day. We'd 2nd November 22

The museum is free to visit but again no direct public transport acess unless you are on the city sightseeing tour buses. You have to get the subway or train to partick and a long walk along a busy road
There is plenty to see but the main hall seems to be very cramed in
I have a "Hidden disability" that means I struggle to use a masks. I had my lanyard on show but as soon as I walked in I had a member of staff shouting at me to put a mask on I felt that was quite unprofessional considering its a tourist attraction if it was paid admission I would have got the manager and asked for a refund.i found this experience quite distressing

...and free! The suggested donation of a fiver isn't enough for this awesome interactive museum. Do many cool modes of transport under one roof, so many historical stories - the world's worst shipbuilding disaster was heartbreaking and unbeknownst to us. Oh, there's a supercool tall ship moored outside as well. Just a brilliant half day out.

Great day out, very interesting. This would have been a 5, but we were a group of 13 meeting in the cafe, which took an age due to very unclear/confusing signposting in the museum. Other than that we loved our day out and I loved the street in particular. The real shame is how unaccessible the venue is by public transport, but a taxi does the job.

We visited (my oldest grandson who is 6 and myself) on a Saturday. The museum is fairly well sign-posted and there is plenty of on-site parking. The car park was about half full so the museum was busy. Parking is £1.60 per hour but entry to the museum (and the adjacent Tall Ship) is free.
Mask- wearing is compulsory though compliance was patchy. About 20% didn’t bother at all which is poor is an indoor environment with lots of kids.
The exhibits were as good as we remembered. As well as car, buses, trams, trains and ships, there is an old Glasgow street with a subway station and shops including a pub. A real taste of Old Glasgow.
The first floor coffee shop was closed but the main restaurant was open (but very busy so we didn’t bother).
It’s an enjoyable visit which you do at your own pace. We spent about an hour there. But you could easily spend a few hours looking at all the exhibits.
A good place to go.

I know everyone is trying their best in covid times but the rapid museum emptying times at the day's end is causing me to leave what would normally be a 5 circle review attraction only 3 circles.
We had booked online in advance (which you have to do at the moment) but could only get the 4pm slot. We knew the place closed at 5 and just had an hour.
That was all understood and fine. What we didnt expect was to be evicted from the museum prior to 5.
At 4.45, a tannoy announces museum closing in 15 mins.
At 4.50, another tannoy announcement. Closing 10 mins
At 4.55, staff approach and tell you to leave.
Was most annoying as we were just finishing off the AV presentation about the Raleigh Chopper bikes which is very close to the exit door. Literally it would have taken all of 10 seconds to get from there and off the premises.
A man approached at 4.55 and told us to make our way to the exit. We hovered a few seconds more, then a lady told us to leave. Then the first man said we had to leave right away.
We were outside the building by 4.57.
I really think, with these booking times, a less rigid approach would be welcomed. The museum was quiet. We would have all been out of there by 5 of our own volition.
I would not advise taking the 4pm slot for this reason. 60 mins is enough time for a quick over view of everything but, really it is 55 mins tops you get and you cant really relax after 45 mins due to tannoy reminders.

Sorry to hear that your visit was spoiled by the tannoy announcements. We start them at 1645 to give people the opportunity to use our toilet facilities prior to leaving, and also so our gallery assistants can sweep their areas thoroughly. Hopefully you can make it back for another visit some time.

Had a week off from work so had a staycation. We rucked up to the museum only to be disappointed to find out you need to book 24 hours in advance. We knew it was free entry so didn’t think about booking….DOH! Thankfully there were places the next day so we booked and returned the next day.
We had been at the old Transport Museum and remember some negative reviews when this one opened up. I don’t know why it got negative reviews in the past as we both thought it was fantastic (and we both loved the old museum too). The setting on the Clyde is fantastic. Our favourite part is still the old Glasgow street. Because of COVID you couldn’t get inside the old trolleys but it was still good to just get up and wee them all. We went to the Tall Ship afterwards and enjoyed that as well.
There are two food stalls in front of the museum and we had lunch there afterwards. Loving setting.
If you have an electric car there are several charge points in the car park - including 2 rapid chargers. They appear to be heavily used, but people charge and go so it was easy to get charged up.

We were staying nearby and enjoyed the walk along the Clyde to this museum, however there is a large payable car park area if you are driving.
Entrance is free but you can make a donation either on entry or at one of the collection points around the museum.
The whole place including toilets and restaurant was very clean.
There is a good collection of cars, bikes, fire engines, trams etc and the mock up cobbled streets with shops is excellent.
Some of the exhibits need a little more investigation into their use as some of the placards were slightly misleading.
The cars on the wall were interesting but some of them are just too high up to view.
The tall ship docked at the rear looks good, but we didn't get on here as it is closed Mondays & Tuesdays.
It's a good place to visit for a morning or an afternoon and I would recommend visiting here for great nostalgia for older people and to let younger people see how transport & daily life has evolved over time.

We took the open top bus trip round Glasgow which was pleasant and informative and decided to visit the above museum. We were advised that walk in visitors would be allowed as the booking process had been a hindrance for tourists!
So we were very disappointed to find that the rules had changed again thanks to Nicola, and spreadsheet man was very happy to tell us that we were NOT allowed to visit even though there was nobody, or so it seemed, visiting the morgue.
The place was empty and despite our pleas we were told no booking no visit.
I’d like to say to Nicola that she has put the fear of God in her fellow countrymen and women and that fear has ensured that the tourists will be pushed away from what is a fantastic country with normally warm and friendly people

Sorry to hear you were disappointed yesterday. We have asked the open top bus tour operators to inform customers that they need to book a ticket for The Riverside Museum the day before their visit, as we are currently welcoming fewer visitors each day due to Covid restrictions. This is to ensure the safety of our visitors and staff.
