Very imposing and grand..quite unbecoming for a cemetery really!
I visited this place as part of a walking city tour. this is right behind the cathedral and the Tennet beer brewery is nearby. There are a lot of interesting headstones to see and some very sombre epitaphs to read. I recommend spending about an hour walking here as many locals sems to use this place to jog/run.

Guided tour of the Necropolis with Claire
I contacted the Necropolis non-profit to try and arrange a tour for my wife and I when we visited Edinburgh. I'm so glad that I did! Our guide, Claire, was outstanding. She knew all about the place, told us some amazing stories, and was our guide for almost an hour and a half walk through the city of the dead. We took several photos, but I won't upload them here since they won't do the place justice. When you reach the top of the Necropolis, you'll have a commanding view of the East End of Glasgow. Well worth it! It was one of the best tours we had on our vacation to Scotland, and I would highly recommend it to anyone!

    Not to Be Missed
Atmospheric, inspiring, intriguing site! I was shocked that the guidebooks I consulted didn't highlight the Necropolis more. Absolutely fascinating, with beautiful views. Don't miss the "Jewish enclosure" and beautiful little monument to William Wallace.

Took some distant relatives for a walk around here
My Australian cousins were over for a visit and wanted to see Glasgow. They were blown away by the Necropolis. Having walked past and through it so many times you tend to forget how amazing it is until you see someone experience it for the first time.

    Fascinating
Yes it’s “just” a cemetery when it comes down to it, but what a cemetery! Effectively a monument to the merchant class’ self-aggrandisement in the 19th century, it is a fascinating place to wander around and look at the variety of monuments of many shapes and sizes. There are also excellent views over the city. Don’t forget the very small Jewish section as well as the Wallace memorial. Our highlight, though, was seeing the tomb of the writer of the nursery rhyme “Wee Willy Winkie”!

    Amazing!
Came here recently during my visit to Glasgow. It's situated right next to the cathedral, so easy to combine as one visit. It's a really impressive place, with lots of monuments on display. Well worth the walk from the city centre!

    History in Tombstones
This place is amazing, unlike anything I've seen before. The massive "necropolis" sits high atop a hill, adjacent to the also massive Glasgow Cathedral. Glasgow's history is on display here, told through the thousands of graves, tombstones, mausoleums, and other monuments. It's actually a beautifully landscaped space, and quite peaceful to walk through.

    Lovely old cemetery
I love to visit cemeteries and had I been alone would have spent much more time wandering around reading the gravestones or taken a tour. Unfortunately my family doesn’t quite share my enthusiasm so our time was limited. What a great place, with lovely views and interesting history. The website said it closed at 4:30 but we arrived after 5 and the gate was open with lots of people inside so maybe confirm times before you go.

    Peaceful and interesting
When my partner first suggested going I wasn't convinced but it really is an incredible place. We spent a peaceful morning walking around and reading all the graves and tombstones. The monuments are just wow and loved the vast view of the city from the top of the hill!

Vast area to explore! Very interesting
We ended up missing the tour for another activity we chose. It probably would have been nice to know more information about the area, but we also didn't feel too much like our experience was lacking to be able to just explore around! We spent about an hour beginning to end, but I would imagine one could spend hours exploring everything! We had intended to return, but didn't end up with enough time before traveling to another city

When anyone comes to visit, I take them here if it isn’t bucketing rain.
It’s just so, so interesting (especially to North Americans) and the history is fab. I’m a photographer - and it’s heaven.
The best views of Glasgow are also from here. So many truly interesting and astonishing structures! It’s huge, so prepare for good walking up and down hills.

What is really special is the Jewish part of the cemetery and its history as it’s a bit apart from the main cemetery.

Be certain to go through the Glasgow Cathedral, too, at the entrance. These two sights are both gems.

Absolutely visit!

Visiting the Necropolis in Glasgow was a hauntingly beautiful experience. Perched atop a hill overlooking the city, this Victorian cemetery is a striking blend of art, architecture, and history. Strolling among the grand monuments and elaborate mausoleums, I was awed by the solemn beauty of the surroundings and the sense of reverence that permeated the air. It's a peaceful oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life, offering a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the legacy of those who came before us. A visit to the Necropolis is a must for anyone seeking a glimpse into Glasgow's rich past and a moment of quiet reflection amidst the chaos of everyday life

After visiting the cathedral I wandered over to the cemetery. I was a very windy day and there was no one there. I wandered around a bit. I didn't do any research to be honest, to see if there were any must sees at the site. As I was alone I felt the need to get out of there.

I was brought up just across from The Necropolis, in the Toonheid in St Mungo St, I have walked all over Glasgow, been to all attractions and famous sites, But I have NEVER ever been in The Necropolis !
This sounds silly, but I have tried hundreds of times over the years
(I am 70 now)
But I get to end of bridge, and I cannot step off it into cemetery,
It's like an invisible wall,
I remember even trying to go in with my kids during summer hols, lovely hot sunny day just couldn't, don't expect to go in now, not even in a box

The Necropolis is right next to Mungo's Cathedral. Nice to walk around this green area. Nothing much to see, other than the toumb stones, and some of them quite fancy.

This is a very interesting place to visit, because of the 'beautiful' gravestones and the best view of the Glasgow cathedral. Stroll here for half an hour, and enjoy the scenery.

Although this place is not in the center of town (just east of it), a visit to the Glasgow Necropolis is highly recommended.
It is interesting in itself to walk through a (mainly) 19th century cemetery, but the elevated location makes this place really special: views in all directions.

A photographer's paradise!
