- Charles GEugene, Oregon234 contributionsLove the subway! The Glasgow subway is small compared to other cities, but convenient to popular sites and easy to use. There is only one loop that runs in both directions (see the attached map). You can buy either a one way or round trip ticket at the entrance to the stations.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 September 2023
- Anne K2 contributionsPerfectnight outWe had a superb meal in the prancing stag restaurant glasgow. It was a taster menu for burns night. My husband had the main selection and l had on the most part with some vegetarian option . They also had a selection of wines to compliment the dishes at very reasonable additional price£22. I would thouroughly reccommend this restaurant. The staff were great very helpful definitely a place to visit.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2024
- JP326734 contributionsWorth a look but not worth walking toWe drove over to the West End during our 3 day stay. It can also be reached on the tube. We found the historic little streets although there were only a couple. We then went and sat in a lovely park away from it all with view over looking the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and the University.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 August 2024

Walking in West End of Glasgow city is an unique experience, because everything change from a moment to another. We saw here a lot of various attractions like restaurants, pubs, shops. Here we saw the impressive Victorian houses of many celebrities. The quarter includes Woodlands, Hillhead, Hynland, Byres Road, and Kelvingrove with its wonderful park.
A walk in Glasgow West End is a very relaxed way to achieve the visit in Glasgow.

The West End of Glasgow is famous for its beautiful architecture, charming, interesting shops, lively nightlife, parks and is centered around Byres Road. The neighborhood attracts a lot of people, many students studying at Glasgow University. People come here for shopping, lunch and meeting friends. Ahston Lane behind Byres Road is a popular cobblestone lane lined with many pubs, restaurants and Grosvenor Cinema where you can watch a movie over a glass of wine or beer. It is a district of elegant townhouses and many attractions including the Kelvingrove Art Galleries, the new Riverside Transport Museum, Botanic Gardens and Kelvingrove Park. The Glasgow Underground runs throughout the West End making transport to the City Centre easy and quick. The West End Festival, one of Glasgow's largest festivals, is held annually in June. Always great to be visiting the West End. It is a place full of energy . Don't miss it when u visit Glasgow.

After the hustle and bustle of Glasgow city centre I would suggest taking a walk west to the west end of the city. Crossing the motorway you can feel the tension release.
There are some beautiful buildings to admire along with Kelvingrove. Highly recommended.

Maybe a good idea for this area would be to allow children to be allowed in bars for at least a while in the afternoon without food required. The west end is so backwards it is unbelievable. Fine in Dennistoun. But the west end is anti children. Tried to find somewhere to sit with a drink for 1 hour before going to a restaurant to meet my father. My son felt like an unwanted individual as I asked bar after bar at 3 in the afternoon if we could sit for a drink. I have travelled a lot of the world and lived in Glasgow for many years. But it has to be said. The West end of Glasgow is not a family friendly place. Backwards is best to describe it. Could maybe look to the continent for ideas. Or maybe east. Not for familys.

Glasgow has lots of big talk buildings, which I love. But Glasgow City seems very dirty and messy. Central train station are reminded me of the city Gotham. Lots of people seem to be on drugs or drunk. Once a great city no doubt ,now appears to be decaying. But it opened my eyes so still an enjoyable experience.

This review features the West End jewel,Park Circus. The magnificent architecture rivals similar type constructions in Edinburgh. Construction began in 1872 and the Circus is yet another example of Grand Victoriana. It is situated right next to Kelvingrove park,so you can easily swing by and enjoy this magnificent sight if walking in the park At 6 park gardens directly facing a park entrance you can see the former headquarters of the Scottish Football Association before its relocation to Hampden Park. An area jam packed with historic interest

Came here with my boyfriend on a day trip when we went to see the University of Glasgow and Glasgow botanical garden, because the west end is the area where you'll find them. Overall I enjoyed walking along here because there are many small shops, grocery stores, and restaurants that you can check out. It's definitely a good place to go to take pics here and there and kill time, even if you aren't wanting to spend money.

An average, dirty street with poor selection of shops and you will have the misfortune of seeing lots of junkies and beggers.
Some ok coffee shops and a marks and Spencer. Could be way better and way cleaner.
Ashton Lane is so over rated and pretty boring. If you are going dont look down the filthy side streets on your way there!

Is there parking around botanical gardens?
Written 26 August 2017
Hi, parking is not easy around the Botanic Gardens. You can park in Byres Road, if you are lucky enough to find a space. Some of the streets off Byres Road have parking meters which sometimes are quiet and very busy at other times.
Waitrose at the top of Byres Road, near Botanic Gardens has a parking area above the shop. Normally you can get parked there but only for a limited time. Not sure how long, perhaps an hour or two. The lift from the carpark takes you down into the shop, you can then get out of the shop into Byres Road.
In general, I can usually find a suitabke space but sometimes hou have to drive around to get one. However, Botanic Gardens and Byres Road are worth the trouble of parking.

I would like to know why there has been no hot chocolate available at this restaurant for the past four weeks despite the matter being reported to McDonald's and their franchisee Andrew Gibson. Is this the standard of service we can now expect under the Mcdonald name? I am having no success in my enquiries.
Written 24 April 2017
I wouldn't eat or drink in McDonald's as there are numerous coffee shops and tea rooms who would I am sure, make you a hot chocolate drink. We scots you know love to please.

How to I get from Glasgow city centre to the west end ?
Written 16 May 2016
Really easy! Hop on the Subway from Buchanan Street or St Enoch and get off at Hillhead. Come out the station turn left and you're in the heart of the west end. You'll love it :)

Don't know your price range but I think that for European food Ubiquitous Chip near parking and underground would be good if a little pricey. Ox and Finch near Kelvingrove does sharing dishes which could work really well for a large group but I'm not sure if their seating arrangement would accommodate. Worth checking. If it doesn't have to be west end, can recommend Guy's in the Merchant City or Piccolo Mondo (Italian) in Argyle street Hope this helps.

What hotels or guest houses are within walking distance to the bars and restaurants in the West End. Is there a specific street where good bars and restaurants are in Glasgow.
Written 5 February 2015
Great western Road and into Byers Road are the two that I explored. Byers Road leads down to a busy area for bars etc. there are pleanty of hotels etc in this area. I actually stayed in a Hostel as I was working at the Games.

If you want basic ,cheap but well located the IBIS on west edge of the city centre is good for city centre and walking (if you're fit and a walker!) to kelvingrove/university/west end.
