Travelled right through the cairngorms on a lovely sunny day. Amazing scenery and worth the three hours it took driving right down through Braemar and Balmoral.

We read about the Snow Roads route and decided to do it north to south via Grantown on Spey, Tomintoul, Ballater, Braemar and Blairgowrie. The drive was surprisingly easy, despite the fact that you go through the Cairnwell Pass on the A93 road between Glenshee and Braemar which is the highest main road in the United Kingdom, reaching an altitude of 670m (2199 ft). This is a stunningly beautiful and varied area. The scenery is very diverse- lochs, forests, mountains and lovely villages. It is a haven for wildlife and outdoor pursuits. The forests are strewn with trails and cycle tracks. The Speyside Way is also well known as a long distance footpath and fun to do sections of the walk if there isn’t time to complete it all. There are lots of great walks and water sports. In the winter there are good skiing facilities. Aviemore is the hub for accommodation, eateries and outdoor shops. But there are plenty of other great places locally to stay. Trains and buses all go to Aviemore.…
