About
The Cairngorm Mountain Resort is situated on Britain’s 6th highest mountain in the Cairngorms National Park. Enjoy a trip on Scotland’s only funicular railway to the highest restaurant in the UK reaching the Ptarmigan building at over 1,097m. During the summer months any visitors who take the train are not permitted to exit the top station in keeping with the Cairngorm Conservation Plan. It is a place of outstanding natural beauty. In winter the resort is a haven for Snowsports. The Cairngorm Mountain gets the most reliable snow in Scotland and provides plenty of terrain for all levels. Whether you are a beginner or are looking for something more extreme, you are sure to have a great day out. In Summer, guests can enjoy activities such as guided walks or simply enjoy the views from 635m (Car Park Level). Our Adventure Play & Tubing Park is a must do activity with incredible views . Visit our café which is open all year round. Our new mountain biking trails are fully open.

- undertheclockSaline, United Kingdom127 contributionsOn the chilly side - very refreshing! My sister and I loved our visit to the Ptarmigqn on Cairngorm. It was great to see the skiers out in the snow and stepping outside for a short while was quite an experience - not one to be missed. Railway staff were lovely and polite but some of those inside the restaurant were somewhat lacking in professionalism at times. The exhibition is beautiful to watch, it’s like flying on the back of an eagle. Although we are Scottish, we felt the voice over for the exhibition was a bit fast at times for us to fully understand.Visited February 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 February 2023
- Leigh M6 contributionsBest day of the season so far 😀I finally made the trip up to Scotland after seeing that snow was coming and wasn’t disappointed. I arrived on Saturday, keen to get up the mountain on Sunday. I found out pretty quickly that the busses to the mountain don’t run on Sundays but managed to get a ride up and down after putting a message on their fb page. Day 2 was very snowey, 35cm during the day so the mountain closed after a few hours. Day 3 was amazing, lots more snow coverage and more runs and lifts open. It wasn’t too busy and the mountain railway was really handy to get up and down the hill. The snow was great, a bit heavier that what I’m used to in the Canadian Rockies but the groomed slopes were fast and the upper mountain was full of deep powder. This was my 25th ski resort in my 7th country and I think I hit the jackpot as far as it comes to Scottish skiing and I feel so fortunate.Hi E5967JPleighm Thanks for your comprehensive review. Unfortunately we have no control of the local bus service and appreciate the major inconvenience on your behalf. We are delighted that you enjoyed our lovely fresh snow/deep powder and we do hope we can welcome you back again. - Heather HEdinburgh, United Kingdom424 contributionsGood afternoon out.Easily accessible by public transport, although you do have to plan around the timetable as it isn’t as regular as you may think. However, this made the trip up enjoyable for all as we could sit back and appreciate the view. Good facilities when you get there too. Would go earlier in the morning next time and stop at Rothiemurchus on the way back for a bite and some shopping.Hi Heather, thanks for your review. We are delighted that the public transport timings worked well for you and you enjoyed our lovely facilities up here. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon. All the best. - Emily bowerChesterfield, United Kingdom32 contributionsGreat visit with some slight issuesGreat views from the top and great ride on the train. Gift shop very expensive. Sad dogs can’t go up on the train. Surely they can just nip out of the top station for a wee then be allowed back inside. One person had to miss out on the trip to the top as our dog isn’t fit enough to walk up. Heard lots of other people saying the same thing which is a shame. Cafe and tubing closed. Later found out tubing is only on weekends but no info on cafe on website. Apparently staff issues so we couldn’t get dinner from base camp with our dog. Still a lot of works being done so maybe next time we visit it will be better. Website defo needs updating with cafe opening so people can bring food if it’s not open.Visited May 2023Written 10 May 2023
- Gregg BirminghamBirmingham, United Kingdom91 contributionsInteresting Experience, Top Station a little lackingFour adult family members made the trip up to the mountain railway in May this year. The weather was good. The railway itself is very interesting going up and down the mountain. There is a huge cafe and restaurant at the top. But the viewing areas really feel like an afterthought. The viewing platform facing down the mountain is a bit tricky to find and why did they not build a platform with 360 degree views? Can only face one direction. It’s a bit underwhelming as a viewing area tbh. Would not go up again but was a must do for us who are not good enough walkers to hike closer to the top ourselves.Hi GreggSheffield Thank you for taking the time to review us and that you enjoyed the views and mountain railway. There are plans in the pipeline to extend the viewing terrace which will add to the experience. - gary15 contributionsTOTALLY disappointed and ripped offVERY disappointed! The veiwing area was half open with workmen laying paving. This would have been OK if we had been warned. Booked online- no notice there, no notices at the bottom, Told about the work on our way up!! GEE, thanks! Totally spoilt our trip. To make matters worse , you cannot go outside, supposedly to preserve the mountain top- REALLY? If loads of people walk up they can go where they please AND to add insult to injury, can come in , use the facilities and the same "viewing" area- what a joke. We felt totally ripped off, ALSO , on the way down no tickets are checked. We could have walked up for free AND got the train back down without paying!Dear blade3565 We are very sorry to hear that your experience was a disappointing one. We operate a closed system or Cairngorm Mountain Conservation Plan during the summer months and this was put in place as part of the conditions when the funicular was built. We are aware that there are walkers on the mountain but they have not used the train for access out onto the mountain. We also sometimes have to do essential maintenance on our outdoor area and we are working on an exciting new extension to our viewing terrace for our future customers. - lara16 contributionsAn Expensive DrinkUnderstand that the Funicular Railway has recently re-opened - I went on the group rate of £14 which others in the party considered expensive. The ride up only takes 7/8 minutes and at the top you enter a complex, which comprises a shop, restaurant, gin bar and viewing platform. It was a sunny day but view was still a bit misty from the viewing platform. I would guess that you would get a fantastic view, in the winter with the snow covered peaks. As others have said you can't get out onto the mountain - I don't think this message is clearly articulated, although I understand the rationale. A Gin and Tonic was £7 which is broadly similar to London prices. Nice to sit and ponder the view with a G&T in hand but combining that with the cost of the Funicular, makes it an expensive drink. Having done the Nevis Gondolas, I would recommend that as trip as at least you get out in the air and stretch legs. A very expensive option for families and sadly I think its a one off trip for most.We appreciate your feedback and comments. The group rate is a highly discounted rate and we apologise that it did not meet with your expectations in terms of value for money however we are offering a unique experience on the funicular railway. All customers are advised before they purchase their tickets that under the Cairngorm Conservation Plan and the terms and conditions of the ticket for the train there is no outside access permitted except on our outdoor viewing terrace. The weather is out with our control with some days offering different views with a natural variation to enjoy but hopefully always a unique one. - Marion SMonifieth, United Kingdom131 contributionsDisappointing visitWe enjoyed our drive up to the railway but unfortunately not the experience we had hoped for. The sound quality on the train was poor and as a previous visitor stated there was no attempt at making it available to overseas visitors. The viewing gallery was very small and yes the workers were there laying another area. On the whole the area was a bit of a building site and certainly not value for money. Five minutes spent and we returned down to the car park.Apologies that you felt your visit was not what you had expected. We are continuing to invest and improve our facilities and hope in the meantime our visitors can appreciate that the building site is only here for a short time whilst the extension to the terrace are is being built. We also are aware about the train audio and are looking at alternative methods to deliver other languages which will improve our overseas visitors experience. - JoshieAberdeen, United Kingdom550 contributionsCostly but Worthwhile! The Cairngorms have always had a special place in my heart, we had been planning this trip for a while and read ahead on the pricing and policy once up the mountain. I do find the reduced rate of £17 quite costly, nevermind the full rate once the maintenance has been completed. I understand they have had set backs on reopening the railway and getting it back up to spec but that shouldn't be charged back to tourists and skiers. They have definitely modernised the whole experience with a refurbished carpark/ticket barrier system, modernised restaurant and viewing terrace at the top with a theatre experience all about the Cairngorms. I couldn't believe the views as you travel up/down the mountain, definitely worth a picture or two! Staff were really friendly at the base station and on the train but found the restaurant staff at the top quite unfriendly which let down the experience slightly. I would have expected more for the £17 whether it include a coffee/cake at the top or a short tour into the mountain range but I suppose with current inflation and the location it will make its money. All in all it was great to finally get on the funicular railway and have lunch at the top of the mountain although the cafe is quite costly and the selection of sandwiches are a bit poor if you are just wanting a bite to eat rather than a hot meal.Dear Reviewer Many thanks for taking the time to review us and great to hear that you had a positive and enjoyable visit. As you say the views are amazing giving one an unique experience. I do note your comment re the restaurant and will pass this to the appropriate department. - Bean_LimerickWigan, United Kingdom9 contributionsWonderful Views. We had a quick lunch at the Cairngorm Cafe, and it was lovely. We had sandwiches and tea and sat out enjoying the fabulous sunshine and the incredible views. We didn't have time to take the funicular nor did we have time to take a walk on the mountain (unlike our last visit when we spent a lovely afternoon walking). Its a wonderful place to visit and far more enjoyable, I think, than Aviemore.Hello Many thanks for your review and delighted to hear that you had a enjoyable visit and yes the views are even better when the sun is shining. Place has seriously went down hill over past 10 years. Rubbish lift system. Overpriced.
Sometimes you have to book in advance and they will not refund you when you discover it is totally rubbish.
Considering the amount of tax payers money has bailed them out over the years.
Some staff very nice, some staff quite intimidating.
Save your time and money and hike to slide the mountain or go elsewhere.

Well it would appear the Grinch is out early! The lady infront of me pointed out that the main doors were still locked and only the back door was open 20 minutes after 'opening time'. The miserable lady behind the till just ignored her. I asked if they were serving any hot food as the big board had a list of food available after 11am, it was 10am. Without speaking, she just turned a small sign around with 3 bap options on it and gave me such a look I turned around and walked out. Happy Sunday to the grumpy woman!

Amazing drive up with beautiful views. Couldn’t rate the tube slide staff more - they were so friendly and helpful with our kids. The kids loved the tube slides and little play park, while we got to take in the stunning scenery. The cafe is nice and welcoming and we were really surprised by the number of vegan options available too. Great watching the bike track from the cafe too! Sad the train wasn’t working but just an excuse to come back! Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area

We went tubing at the Cairngorms ski resort this afternoon and had a blast. The whole family (2 adults + 2 teens), spent 30 minutes tubing down the 2 bigger slopes and walking back up without much queuing. The staff was very friendly and appreciated the brief safety talk at the start. We’d defo come back.

I knew before visiting the mountain railway was closed for maintenance again, but I still wanted to visit for the walks and views. The website refers to a few walk options, but (unless I missed them) I couldn't see them signposted. I did follow a trail to a waterfall, with lovely views, but I think there were a few missed opportunities here, particularly if the railway is so often closed. It also looked like the cafe was closed, which surprised me. This was, however, on a weekday, and after a few days of bad weather, so perhaps that played apart. I hope to visit again some time when more is open!

I come to Aviemore a few times a year to walk the dogs with the other half. I snowboard here at least once a year. I decided to try the trails as a new offering. I booked an e-bike ( had to phone as couldn’t book an e-bike on line). Upon arriving at the mountain the hire process was straightforward, all staff were extremely helpful. The trails are suited to all levels with different start points at different heights up the mountain. The upper level start point is a 5 min ride uphill on an e-bike from the magic carpets, the trails flow nice and have a small number of different lines to take etc. e bike although hard tail was sufficient, I’d definitely recommend the trails and will do them again during my next visit

We travelled up to the top of the Mountain via the Furnicular Railway which is a fantastic experience as it ascends rapidly amidst spectacular scenery. At the top and within the Dome plenty to do with a 3 D Vista experience and walks if booked. The only downside is the prices in the Cafe very expensive probably because of the cost of getting the materials there. Overall a first class experience and an attraction welcome back after being closed for so long

Return visit, we came in Feb for skiing, which was great. This time we came for the bike tracks. The whole set up with the moving walk way to help you up and the designed down hill tracks was amazing. All abilities catered for and even bike / helmet hire if needed.
Tubing - great fun with three different slides. Nice twist on the normal tubing experience with something for kids and adults. Staff made it real fun with spinning the tubs, going backwards etc…
Staff - very friendly and helpful, all of them. The gentleman on the gate (sorry didn’t get his name) and James in the bike hire area were so helpful when my daughter damaged her bike. Thank you!, she was able to finish the day thanks to you both!
Facilities - cannot fault them. Made to feel like a ski centre (the resorts main purpose). Clean, tidy and well maintained.
Cost - a little on the expensive side but what else would you expect? It’s a resort on a mountain. Everything is more difficult to get up there and as a result, more expensive for the resort. I think it’s very good value for money.
We will be back for skiing and biking.

Will the funicular railway be open by Nov 2022? How much will it cost? How much time should I allocate for this funicular rail trip up to summit and back?
I understand tubing may take at most an hour - would anyone advise how to spend the remaining hours of the day after that? Is there a cafe nearby that I can sit in to watch them tube?
Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd

Hi, the funicular will not be open in November this year. We plan to have it open early next year. Please keep an eye on our website/social media for updates. The tubing session lasts 30 minutes excluding the safety brief. Please check our website nearer the time re availability. CMSL team.

YES, cafe open and no restrictions on kids playing, but be mindful of the cars in the car park
If we take the bus to the base station can we walk up from there to the summit? And how long is the walk (distance wise)?
Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd
Aviemore, UK
Hi. We are presently covered in snow so would advise that you have winter walking gear. Depending on your fitness and the weather conditions it can take anything from 45 minutes to 2 hours to walk up to the summit. It is about 3 to 3.5 kilometers depending on your route.
