I preferred the area around the river, lots of restaurants and bars. Pretty too as well as very majestic. We did the walk along and across the bridges and really enjoyed it.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 February 2024

The river wends it's way through the centre and beyond. Very relaxing, extremely beautiful and a lovely way to take your mind off the rigours of life. Find a quiet spot, watch the birds making their living off the water and feel life's stresses ebbing away. The riverside walks are simply lovely and you wont want to stop your wander.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 March 2024

We parked on the opposite side and wandered across the bridge and there are magnificent views both ways to be seen. There are walks alongside the river with plenty of seating to while away the day..Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 May 2024

The river ness means “mouth of the Ness”. It separates Inverness into two with a beautiful bridge in between.
The river view is simply breathtaking and relaxing! Will recommend for a selfie or with your loved one – especially on the other side of the town – where mostly residential houses are situated. On the lively part, you will get lots of commercial building and food corner.

River Ness and Ness Islands are beautiful day and night.
Whilst walking around the islands we found a little sculpture of a leaf man, which was really cute.
Then walking back over there was the town and castle in the background.
On the night time the river is lit up and castle is just stunning.
Very peaceful walk and I will definitely return.

We absolutely loved our walks along the river ness whilst on holiday in Inverness. The air is so fresh here I honestly could not believe it and the scenery is so beautiful especially in the autumn time. Would highly recommend a walk here especially if you are a couple as it's very romantic.

A lovely, picturesque walk along the river bank crossing bridges to the 'islands' to get to the Botanic Gardens and back along the other side of the river to visit the cathedral.
The botanic gardens, though fairly compact had an amazing collection of plants from all parts of the world. There is also a very pleasant cafe with both indoor and outdoor seating.

The perfect experience. The castle is closed for renovations and there's an admissions charge to the cathedral, so it being a rare warm sunny day, we decided to walk up to the islands. An excellent choice, with quiet private benches on which to sit and just listen to the river and birds. Perfect for a picnic if you're so inclined (and with many nearby groceries from which to stock up). Tall evergreens and beech trees provide shade for much of the walk and there's no question that you will leave most of the tourist traffic behind.

An extremely pleasant riverside walk, lovely views of the Castle. The water is crystal clear. Several bridges along the walk. Stopped off for an ice-cream at street vendor selling delicious Carte d'or Ice Cream (very reasonably priced). Very relaxing and enjoyable walk.

I knew Inverness was a beautiful city, but the River Ness and it's amazing walks just blew me away. I have had the pleasure of visiting many a city around the world that have rivers at their heart. But nothing prepared me for what Inverness had to offer let alone the amazing River Ness. Whether it be day or night, rain or shine, a walk along its Bonnie banks is a breath of fresh air like no other...and take a picnic and hang out on the Ness Islands :)

Visited Inverness for 2 nights in May 2023. The river runs through the city and is easily reached from anywhere in town. Well marked trails on both sides of the River with pedestrian bridges to both sides and the little islands in the middle of the river. Stop along the way to see St Andrews Cathedral, the Inverness Botanical garden, the statue of the 3 Graces and the distillery/brewery. Grab an ice cream or snack from one of the food trucks. Revel in the natural beauty of the trail/ riverwalk

Really nice hotel, surroundings and rooms and I have stayed previously. Arrived on Sunday afternoon 10th March to find out they had no running water. Really disappointed as I had been travelling for several hours only to be told that it would be the next day before it would be looked. Then I was surprised to hear that there was no refund or partial refund for this inconvenience. A few drinks would have gone a long way. Nice hotel all the same.

This is a beautiful setting and has paved pathways on both sides. There is a pretty suspension bridge for pedestrians that moves when you walk on it. There are numerous restaurants, pubs and hotels alongside the river and easy access to the city center.

Hello, I'm interested in doing the river island walk I've read about - anyone done this and how long should it take? Also is there a map anyone used and found useful or is it pretty easy? Thank you :)

If you mean walking around ness islands, then it's as long as you like, you could speedwalk through them in ten mins, or stroll through in a couple of hours. We started on the south side of the river in town, walked along the river, crossed onto the islands, and then played crazy golf on the north side and walked further on to whin park for the kids to play, then walked back along north side to Inverness town past cathedral. Probably spent 3-4 hours doing all that. It's a truly stunning part of the world. Would loved to have done it at night, it's got lights all around the paths apparently. It's very clean too
