The Black Isle

The Black Isle

The Bonnie Black Isle is, on a bright summer’s day, not black. Nor, on any other day is it an island. “Bonnie” (Scots for “beautiful”) however, it assuredly is and it affords the visitor many beautiful views, seascapes, wildlife and places of interest. The “Isle” is in fact a peninsula strategically lying between the broad expanses of two Firths, Moray and Cromarty.

The Glory of Ross

The Glory of Ross

Still very unspoiled and remote, Wester Ross is very often missed from the visitor’s itinerary, possibly through pressure of time.

If there is one area of the Highlands that affords different and breathtaking views as another bend of the road unwinds, then it is this spectacular area. Mirrored, majestic mountains, heather hills, tree lined lochs and wildlife abound here.

My guide, Seoras, was exceptionally knowledgeable, and his passion for Scottish culture, the Highlands and the Gaelic language is palpable. He is a natural storyteller, eager to regale you with tales both personal and epic.  I had the absolute pleasure of touring Inverness, Culloden and Chanonry Point. Including visits to famous inspirations for the book and tv series Outlander. Serolas was incomparable with his generosity and eagerness to share. Unmissable tours with amazing guides!!

We were so lucky to have Andrew Mc Donald as our guide! He picked us up at the hotel in his lovely Kilt and a Mercedes van. From that moment on we experienced a day full of great and truly memorable sights and stories about the Highlands. Andrew‘s vast knowledge of Scottish history and his delightful way of delivering it to us made everything come alive in front of us while he sang along lovely folksongs. What an unexpected treat !! What a fine scotsman! XXX Amélie, Linda, Peter & Felicity

We were very concern about this trip as we were traveling with a 2 years old child. But the tour was amazing. The car was comfortable, it was provided a seat car for our daughter, Andrew drives safe and he was so kind and nice with us, told us lot of good history and the places visited! It was excellent. Thank you Andrew!

Thank you so much for your kind review. It was an absolute pleasure to guide you both. Your daughter Melissa was no trouble at all. I too was a little concerned about a two year old and a long day but enjoyed every minute of our time together.

We were picked up at our hotel in the morning and off we went for another fabulous tour...this time with Steve Cairns. We went to The Isle of Skye and on the way we went to Urquhart Castle and did the tour...fascinating and it wasn’t too crowded so we actually got a feel for it...it is one of the most picturesque castles in Scotland and somewhat rebuilt after the british destroyed it...but...still the remodelling of it is authentic and the experience leaves you with an understanding of the legends of the time and their brutal history... On the way to the Isle of Skye which is a long drive we saw so much of the highlands and the homes, farms, animals, waterfalls, hills, valleys, mountains and heard the history all the way...it was a GREAT day and we loved Steven he was a fun guide spending the day with him was most enjoyable.

On behalf of Steve and myself, thank you again Gwen. (I sound like the groom at a wedding.) I was really glad that Steve was available to take you to Skye and that you didn't miss out on that wonderful Island experience. Great pleasure meeting you both and sharing our lovely country.

Andrew arrived at our hotel to pick us up at 9am and delivered us back at 5pm. In between was a phenomenal tour of many of the places or similar ones that we had read about in Outlander or seen in the series. We asked that he show us not only related Outlander places but to give us a FEEL for Scotland...and he outdid himself doing just that. We saw the simple beauty of the scottish highlands as he SANG to us different ballads and songs of the people ...giving us a feeling of the land and history. We walked Culloden meadow and walked and went the museum there, the history of Scotland is fraught with wars, we saw castles that were built some in1300 -1400 hundreds...and they still stand or parts of them do...their turrets jutting out so to be able to keep watch for danger...there is a sadness that permeates the land though... portrayed in the music and culture and ways throughout the highlands...a land of people that have always wanted the most basic desire...their freedom. We saw Bleuly Priory where Jamie and hid out after Culloden, Clava Cairns, Castle Leod a 14th Century Scottish Tower/Castle that still stands and has been in the the McKenzie family ever since... and the beautiful tree garden there.some of them hundreds of years old....we went to Wardlaw Mausoleum where the clan Frasers were buried...we saw Fortrose Cathedral...or what was left of it after Oliver Cromwell destroyed it and so many other beautiful buildings in his reign of terror ....(my opinion) We saw Chanonry Point where the dolphins play...and learned about the brahan castle seer a 17 th century seer who forsaw the deaths of 4 sons of Countess Isabella and she had him burned in a spiked barrel of tar! We went to the Clootie Well where people still take clothes or pieces of clothes of sick people in their family dip them in the water and hang them there ...the belief is that it will cure the sick person....and we went to a delightful pub for lunch and we couldn’t go to Cawdor Castle because the Duchess of Cawdor was in residence but we got to see it...and then the next day we went with Steve Cairns one of Andrews friends that took us on a day trip of the Isle of Skye...through the highlands...what a delightful treat and more of the beautiful scenery and life of the highlands...and another lunch ...although Steve does not sing he is a fount of information just like his friend Andrew....they really gave us the best of the best and we felt like we really got a feel for Scotland. Thank you both so very much. You made our trip.
