This is a lovely partly restored castle close to Port Glasgow there are lots of nooks and crannies and beautiful views over the Clyde estuary. The shipbuilding yard is close by and being part of the history of the area adds extra interest. Well worth a visit. There are grounds but I am not sure if you could picnic there.

The castle is a wonderful introduction to life in the past. For children the size is ideal: lots of places to discover but not on a grand scale. We spent about 1.5 hours with smaller children (7 years old or so). The castle has very brief but helpful signage to explain its history and function. It is peaceful on a... More

After purchasing our historic Scotland passes we decided to visit the nearest attraction which was Newark. The woman who worked there was so approachable and knowledgeable about the castle which we really appreciated. The history of the castle is absolutely fascinating and we would highly recommend it to anyone. We will be going back definitely.

Yet another great Scottish Castle with lots of history and beautiful architecture. Great help from the custodian who had lots of wonderful stories to tell. Easy to get to and loads of parking. This is the 3rd time we have visited the Castle and each time we find out something new about it.

Finally visited with two five year olds, after driving past for ten years. Since we had joined Historic Scotland earlier in the year, entry was free (Huge Plus!). The castle itself is undergoing some restoration work, so not all areas were open, but this had been well publicised on the app. Have to say, this a very well maintained castle,... More

Speaking from experience, I am glad that I missed the birth of all four of my children while hunting Pokémon here, such is the pursuit of the ultimate Pokémon master. On hot days, when I am a fan of a fan, I have encountered magmar, charmeleon and countless growlithe, amongst the myriad of the hoi polloi of pidgey, rattata and... More

Newark Castle was built in the 1500’s and largely survived the industrial revolution and the building of shipyards literally all around it as it became ‘invisible’ from land due to other buildings. It managed to avoid attracting vandals or any attention at all. When the shipyards began to close local authorities rediscovered the largely intact castle. Heritage Scotland acquired it... More

Older children would enjoy going round castle there is storytelling, and great scenery to be seen from ramparts. Could do with a cafe to relax.
