Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Why on earth close for the winter? Looked the museum up in Google which said it was open today. The sign outside days open 10am to 5pm. It does not say it is only certain months. A lady going in (to work?) said "we're closed for the winter" as if we should know that. It's not as if there's much else to do in Elgin! If there are people working they must have to hear and light the place so why not open and get some donations to help run it? The north east of scotland seems to have no clue about attracting tourists.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience yesterday. Our own website home page gives the opening hours for 2017 and says we would be closing on 5th November, and that we are open at other times by appointment. Our permanent poster in the glass case also gives our opening period as April to October. Yesterday afternoon I also made posters to say clearly that we are now "closed" for the winter, although events and lectures continue - and please to follow us on our website, facebook and twitter. Coincidentally my additional posters will have just missed you. I am very sorry however that the volunteer you passed was not more helpful. We are all volunteers, apart from a very part time Museum Assistant. It is only through the winters when there are no visitors that we are able to attend to collections care and other essential maintenance activities. There is not room here to go into further detail, but this is an independent museum and our band of volunteers strives each to their utmost to keep the show on the road and I hope that others' reports reflect our efforts. Should you want to try again before we reopen on 30th March 2018, please contact us preferably by email, but access may be restricted as we are carrying out a comprehensive and essential review of our collections stores. We are always looking for more volunteers so that we can do more.

This museum is well worth a visit. We spent over two hours in here, it looks small but there is more on display than first appears!

The staff were very friendly and happy to give more information on any of the exhibits. There were also folders by every exhibit providing more information. It's all well laid-out, with a good range of items on display - something to suit every interest.

Entry is free but the museum is certainly deserving of any donation you can give.

Firstly the welcome you get on arrival and to be told a bit about the place, really very interesting lots of good stuff to see and get history from, also great family friendly with little work stations dotted around with dress up areas for the youngsters, upstairs little to see so for those who have difficulty with walking or wheelchair no lift. But 100% will be going back with my granddaughter. Free entry but donation boxes around as this is not funded and run by volunteers,so give generously.

There really is quite a lot to see in this museum. Lots of cabinets with timelines and events. Specific periods of history were covered as well with info on Victorian Elgin. Upstairs there is the Peruvian mummy as well as an interesting space there one of the museum curator lived. Staff were very welcoming and deserve a mention! If you’re in Elgin it’s worth popping in.

For a small independent museum the amount of different items on display is incredible. The variety of thinks to see is incredible. The have serveral displays and art work. Some exhibits are about life over serval centuries with tools from the bronze age and fossels that date back even further. It has interactive parts for children (or grown up children) to enjoy and I think that no matter how diverse your group is there would be something for everyone to enjoy.

Great little museum: Its not large but is housed in an attractive building. The exhibits are across two floors. The majority on the Ground floor.
Its maned(or womaned) by volunteers and this shows in their enthusiasm as you will be assured of a warm and informative introduction to the museum,

If you are interested in Paleontology, its a must.

They also have a number of very interesting and unusual exhibits. Chief of which is a Mummified Peruvian Princess in a glass Jar. Also a shrunken head from Ecuador.

They also sell work by local artists. For this year entry is free.

Its just the right size to spend an hour or so, well worth a look.

A real treasure of a museum, owned and managed by The Moray Society. Originally set up as a science-based museum it houses objects of local, national and international interest. It opened in 1843 and is Scotland’s oldest independent museum.

We spent a good couple of hours looking round the interesting exhibitions and artefacts which spanned the centuries & included an example of a shrunken head, the history relating to the Romans in Moray and an area dedicated to local art to name a few.

The volunteers were very welcoming and willing to provide additional information on request. Some areas have restricted mobility due to the listed nature of the building.

The museum is free to visitors during 2013.

Well worth a look. We will definitely visit again.

Local history, fossils, archaeology, Victoriana, geology! This is the best museum in this part of Scotland, and it's all run by volunteers.

The Local Authority in Moray no longer funds this sort of thing, preferring to spend their (our) money on reconfiguring car parks and installing unnecessary traffic lights.

This just looks from the outside like it may be a one of many little town museums, but wait til you get inside! It's jam packed...in a nicely designed way...with pieces of history from a mummy, to pictish stones, and lots of memorabilia. Free to enter, but please donate...it's soooooo worth keeping it up!
