We had previously done gorge walking at the same location 12 months ago. We had thoroughly enjoyed this, and so Canyoning was just a bit more of an extension in terms of skills, involving ropes and some abseiling. We are a family of five, but my wife was unable to join in, but nevertheless children ranging in age from 12 to 17 thoroughly enjoyed it (I am 47).
We had a small group with two other smaller families, and started higher up at the falls of Bruar. Wetsuits are all provided, and they are of high standard. But you do need old trainers with a good grip. The difference compared to gorge walking, was that we had climbing harnesses. The single instructor was excellent, and he was accompanied by an action photographer (Sophie I think), and she took some truly brilliant photographs of our family. The abseiling segment was relatively straightforward if you are reasonably fit, and there is some basic rope work, crossing cliff faces (the key skill being taking carabiners on and off the rope, and having the confidence to lean out). This was all very well explained and very closely supervised. We felt safe throughout. We all enjoyed the jumps, culminating in a slightly larger jump at the end of the trip. After the initial slight cold shock of immersion, the wetsuits are extremely effective and kept us warm throughout.
My only slight comment was that the midges higher up in the forest were intense, and I suffered around 30 bites in a five minute period during the safety briefing. People were distracted by the midges and were not able to listen to the critical information in the safety briefing. As a human factors facilitator in the NHS, I would suggest performing this at the site before departure.
I would like to thank the team as they were brilliant. And the experience represents good value for money. Well done Nae Limits!!!
