This is a fun family day out and offers a unique view of Cork harbor. You have to take a ferry to visit spike island which is very exciting for young kids. Go on a dry day as the island is wind swept but definitely interesting. Catering is basic, there is hot tea and coffee as well as low budget... More

There is a lovely boat trip over and back to the Island. One feature is the house where Little Nellie lived, the wonder child. The whole experience within the former prison/fort is brilliant. While the prison area is very small the history of the Fort and its artillery and the dual purposes that the Fort has served is very interesting... More

It is worth a trip if you have nothing else to do. Most of the buildings are closed off to the public. If you walk around the walls it is very windy but the views are lovely. That's the best part really. Its all self tour too so there is no information apart from a few reading pieces. Really nothing... More

It is great to be able to experience such an interesting part of our history. A huge amount of effort and investment have gone into preserving the island and allowing us to experience it easily.

Very interesting place - good history. Plenty of info for the visitor. Very well restored (with more being developed I understand). You get to go into the gun emplacements and its easy to imagine the noise and smoke when they were fired off. Only disappointment was the weather - so the views were rained off...but this is a place you... More

This is an amazing place. Well worth a visit. If only the walls could talk! Bring good walking shoes and a buggy if your kids are very young. It can be cold out there in the middle of the harbour all year round so dress for the occasion.

I took my mom to Spike as our brother worked there years ago and wow what a reception we got. As my mom was 88 yrs we were content to stay in the cafe and look at the video as mom couldn't walk around. We met a gentleman who saw our plight and lo! we were taken in a jeep... More

You catch the boat from Cobh and end up in another world. The guide on the day was very informative and brought us up to the 1980's when it was still a prison. Wear sensible boots and rain gear as you dont want to get too wet
