- SummerasalifestyleMalibu, California3,575 contributionsBlendsTerrific blending of the old and the new. Although I’m not much on paintings-sculptures from the masters of old (hundreds of years ago), I certainly enjoy works from present days towards the past. The national gallery provides a terrific frame of reference in art.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 4 October 2023
- MKTBETopeka, Kansas4,090 contributionsWonderful Irish Art Exhibition! We enjoyed a lovely afternoon exploring the highlights of Irish art. Who knew that W. B. Yeats, one of Ireland's most famous poets, had a brother, Jack Butler Yeats, who is an equally famous Irish artist? We also appreciated the works of some of the masters including Rodin, Cezanne, Monet, and Renoir. We struggled getting the tour scan to download to our phones, so we really appreciated a kindly volunteer who helped us to navigate the large gallery. We also love that all of the National Museums of Ireland are free to the public.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 October 2023
- Stefano SLusiana, Italy1,439 contributionsIt is a visit worth. The National Gallery of Ireland is quite small, compared to the huge museums of other European capital-cities, but it would be a mistake to skip it. The entrance is free, which permits you to aim the masterpieces and pass away from the innumerable little artists. Do not miss the "Taking of Christ" form Caravaggio, or the "Portrait of a Venetian senator" of Tintoretto, excellent painting are "The Virgin" of Sassoferrato and "Saint Francis receiving the stigmata" of El Greco. There is a little collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist painters as well: Monet, Caillebotte and Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 9 November 2023
- Colleen BSeattle, Washington108 contributionsAmazing collection!I didn’t realize that Ireland had such a spectacular collection of art! For a relatively new country, that’s impressive! They have a Caravaggio, a Vermeer, a Van Gogh, and a couple of Rembrandts! They also have an impressive number of paintings by female artists! The gallery attendants were very helpful too! I appreciated that the museum was more accessible than many of the attractions in Dublin! My mom has trouble with stairs. This is well worth the visit!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 November 2023
- Byron RLaguna Beach, California696 contributionsLovely architecture and well curated collectionPopped in on a rainy Dublin day and strolled through the various rooms of very well curated, eclectic collection of art. We were almost able to make it through the collection but not quite so make sure to allow enough time quite worth it. - Paul LNenagh, Ireland70 contributionsThe art of Dublin's culture. This gallery is one of the best in Europe and the best free-to-enter museum I have ever visited, in terms of cultural excellence in art being for Dublin what the Rijksmuseum is for Amsterdam, displaying an incredible diversity in the styles of paintings on show with some equally interesting sculptures and crafts to complement these paintings. The staff are very welcoming, helpful, efficient and friendly. There is a brilliant book and gift shop and a superb cafe on the premises.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 December 2023
- david cLos Angeles, California171 contributionsAmazing museumAdmission is free! Free! Free! The gallery consists of multiple buildings in old city Dublin. We saw amazing art. Dead bog people. Taxidermy animals. Ancient Egyptian artifacts for some reason... This is a must see for anyone visiting IrelandVisited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 December 2023
- Bozeman-DublinTrim, Ireland11,334 contributionsGreat GalleryReally enjoyed an unplanned visit to the National Gallery. Always enjoy it here, the Jack B Yeats exhibits in partular. Very friendly, helpful staff. So much to see and plenty of it is free with only the special exhibitions being ticketed. Honestly, I'd be amazed of there wasn't something for absolutely everybody in here.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 January 2024
- permia64,782 contributionsSuperb antidote to wintertimeBeautifully fulfilling its title of Lavery on Location, a superb collection is shown. From France to Palm Springs and Monte Carlo to Morocco, Lavery an inveterate traveller wonderfully and evocatively captures the scene. France and particularly around Grez was a favoured destination and is reflected in works such as On a Bridge in Grez and An Afternoon Chat. Morocco features in great paintings, portraying the White City of Tangier. Croquet – A Group Portrait is a lovely canvas and shows the Scottish Clark Family at play. Windy Day from the first decade of the 1900s shows a woman walking on a Moroccan beach tightly holding onto her hat from the ceaseless wind cutting through the Straits of Gibraltor. These and many others are the perfect antidote to a cold wintertime.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 January 2024
- AbiRugeley, United Kingdom624 contributionsVery Good and I’m not an Art FanDuring our visit to Dublin we visited the National Gallery, mainly to please Hubbie as he loves Art, whereas I can take it or leave it! It is laid out very well big open spaces and plenty of seating so you can appreciate the Art on display, although some visitors seemed to whizz around. There are a few floors but plenty of lifts for access and a cafe in the basement. There are also lockers for bags, costs and pushchairs. Free access and no restriction on timings. We didn’t even have to book. There were a few key pieces by very famous artists, if this is your thing I would definitely recommend a visit.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 March 2024

The collection as it was on view when we visited had its limitations. Specially for its status as a national gallery it is lacking. However there is a nice mix of paintings from Europe. I specifically enjoyed the collection of works from the Low Countries and the gallery containing 20th and 19th century modern works had a few gems. Having no entrance fee charged as its status as a national museum (something I wish my own country would do with its national collections) its definitely worth walking in if you find yourself in Dublin.

A vast collection of paintings, photographs, and a few statues in a really bright and open space. The general collection is free, but you need to buy a ticket for the temporary exhibitions. We enjoyed everything, from the classics to the modern pieces, and especially the photography.

Hard to believe entry to the gallery is free! I've been to lesser galleries in Europe and paid close to €20 for entry. Well worth a visit if in Dublin. The portrait gallery is fab. Also worth visiting a few minutes walk away is the Natural History Museum (also free!).Both collections are fantastic.

I believe this is the first big Aet Gallery I have been to and I was not disappointed. There are many levels to the Gallery and its work ensuring that you take a good couple of hours to take in the full experience. Unfortunately I ran out of time but would definitely recommend to anyone going to Dublin.

A free art gallery deserves a full day visit. Particularly enjoyed the Special Turner exhibition and some of the photography. The main collection seems to have one example from all the great master painters, which is not bad in a small country that never pillaged the whole world. The cafe was particularly good.

I stop in here every time I am in Dublin and they just keep improving the visitor experience. From 15 years ago to the present the difference is noticeable. Great for all ages, great for one of those rainy afternoons you know that will happen. A small donation is all that is asked in return for viewing great art.

My wife and I visited this wonderful art gallery (again) on a Saturday. We were lucky to catch the 1:30 PM guided tour by one of the gallery's most knowledgeable art history docents. Her tour revolved about "Costumes and Culture" (we now wish we had written down her name). The group of about 25 visitors followed the docent around from one beautiful painting to the next while she told the most interesting stories about the subjects in the paintings and other facts related to the history and the artist. Our favorite painting and the docent's most interesting description came in front of John Lavery's painting titled, "The Artist's Studio: Lady Hazel Lavery with her Daughter Alice and Stepdaughter Eileen." The docent made the painting come to life and told things about Hazel, her husband John, the daughters and the painting itself that piqued your interest in finding more information about this fascinating family.
If you can visit this art gallery on a Saturday make sure you do not miss one of the guided tours conducted by a gallery's art historian.

We enjoyed the Gainsborough Exhibition but found the restaurant abysmal: unwelcoming and very expensive for a stale scone and barely warm coffee. There used to be a lovely restaurant here. Would advise visitors to go elsewhere.

My first Carravaggio happened there. And it was brilliant! If you like Picasso he's there as well. And Rembrant is too. And many of genious Irish artists that i met there. Galery looks like a labyrinth, shaped in modern style, with guides and curators all over the place assisting and explaning everything you are looking for. You can easily spend 3 hours of enjoying of world class art and later relax in beautiful cafeteria on the ground floor.

Incredible collection. Very well arranged in this beautiful building. We could have spent a full day here as there’s so much to see. The Caravaggio is breathtaking, there’s no restriction on taking photos, just don’t use flash. It’s an amazing gallery, we will be back!

The cloakroom is located at the entrance of the gallery and is free of charge. While coats and bags may be left at the cloakroom, large suitcases and large rucksacks are no longer accepted.
We allow bags that are similar in size to Airplane cabin baggage so suitcases like the carry-on small ones are acceptable to take.

Hello there,
The gallery and you can google them will advise times of tours. I have to say I like meandering by myself but then again I have a diploma in Fine and Decorative Art. I attended extra mural lectures in Trinity College Dublin on Northern Paintings and History of French art from 1850-1910,
I know what I like.
They have a marvellous Carrivaggio - it's like Jesus in the garden and the final betrayal
The Hugh Lane gallery and Chester Beatty should also be on your list.
