One of Dublin's most beautiful tourist attractions. An unspoiled gem right in the heart of the city. Established in 1707, Marsh's Library is a wonderfully preserved library of the early Enlightenment complete with its original oak bookcases. Visitors often comment on the wonderful smell of the old bookcases and books. The library contains over 25,000 rare and interesting books relating to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, covering medicine, law, science, travel, navigation, mathematics, music, and classical literature. There is also some material of a very scurrilous nature. Every year an exhibition of rare and curious items is presented from the holdings of the Library. The current exhibition is '1916: Tales from the Other Side', exploring minority experiences of 1916 and the years that followed.

I wouldn’t necessarily put this on your itinerary, especially if you have also seen the Long Room of the Trinity College Library. It has much the same feel and, frankly, was a bit disappointing given the entry fee. That said, if you are visiting St. Patrick’s Cathedral and don’t mind the extra expense/time, it was a beautiful old library with... More

Many thanks for your review. We also love the Long Room at Trinity College, but we think that each library has something to unique to offer. As the oldest public library in Ireland, and home of precious books and manuscripts, we’re very proud of our place in the cultural heritage of the city. We’re sorry to hear that you were... More

Very interesting, beautiful and unexpected. I bumped into it by chance when I took a friend to St. Patrick's Church and found it amazing. The explanations are funny and packing and the exhibition about the books connected to Joyce's works was very interesting. The only downside was that people were talking a bit too loud for a library, but all... More

Brilliant library, over 300 years old, and still functioning as a public library. Tour guides very knowledgeable and friendly and very inexpensive to visit.

Really cool history and beautiful library! Would love to have a chance to read some of the books, but it was a very cool experience to visit such an important place in Irish literary history.

Marshes library is genuinely important and massively so for the bibliophile. It is hard to find tucked away at the back of St Patricks Cathedral but inside its like a journey back in time. Well worth a long poke around

The three features of the library are authentic old environment maintained, clearly exceptional old book collection (contents only of interest to relevant scholars) and attentive and diligent guides. I read on Trip Adviser that it was a must see but it disappointed me as not exceptional and was just an authentic old library that did not surprise - on the... More

Thanks for your kind words about our book collection and guides. We're sorry the Library didn't 'do it for you', but we find that the vast majority of people who come are amazed by the survival of the building entirely intact from the time of Jonathan Swift. Visitors currently seem very excited by the exhibition of books James Joyce read... More

Even the entryway, through a brick gate and little secret garden, will enchant you as you visit this library. In our world of e-books and glowing screens, this beautiful library is a sign that always, always, the tangible nature of a book will appeal to our senses and preserve our knowledge and our human stories. This library is not as... More
