Overview
More
Underneath the church are five long burial vaults containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin's most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families, including the legendary Shears brothers and the highly decorated coffins of the Earl's of Leitrim. Since Victorian times visitors have descended the vault steps to see the mummies and Bram Stoker, creator of the "Dracula" stories is believed to have visited the vaults in the company of his family. In one vault can be seen the remains of the "Crusader" though in fact he is only 650 years dead. The early visitors to the vaults were responsible for many of the myths and legends surrounding the bodies, though modern scientific investigations have cast doubts on many of these stories. Nevertheless, a visit to the Crypts to see the historic mummies is a remarkable experience.

This very old church boasts underground crypts with real mummified bodies. Our guide took us through the crypts and told us many eerie tales going back to Ireland's mimicing the French Revolution. We were able to touch the mummies!!! It was all very fascinating and...More

This was an unexpected treat! I love touring old churches in general, and the church itself is an understated beauty. A simple building, built with the varying sizes of warm gray stones that makeup the foundation of Ireland's terrain. Inside appears rather simple at first,...More

Seemed short, but this was only the first part of the visit, where the mummies are shown. The second part of the visit and the stories told - very detailed, very interesting. The guide, of course, did great. An actor - applause :)

Very interesting place with a great guide to take you down into the crypt. We went down as part of a group of mixed nationalities but the guide was quite animated so got his point across using words in all languages. A must visit in...More

Regardless of your age, the crypts underneath the church are a must see. One of the best things I did while in Dublin!! Our tour guide was very informative (and funny) and told us all about the crypts and the people buried there.

The tour guide was really great, he talked very slow and gestured so everybody could easily understand him. And as we were in a big group, he gave us all the opportunity to look around. In general the church staff was very welcoming. I definitely...More

This tour was very different then other attractions. We went through the church on our own with a pamphlet and were greeted by our guide who took us directly to the crypts. We were told the history of the church and crypts, very interesting. We...More

Edgar Allan Poe would have relished an expedition down to these ancient burial vaults...coffins piled one atop another, crushing those at the bottom, revealing the odd leg, arm, head... At the far end, open coffins reveal mummies....one, mouth wide open, "Must have been a woman!"...More

Ok, if you like to do things out of the ordinary this is for you. There is a crypt with the mummies from about the 13th century of a nun, a crusader and someone else. You can still see their fingernails. Gross, creepy and fun!...More

I know it says April 2014 above but didnt have the option to go back further. I was there several years ago but this is a truly unique place. Something in the air has preserved and mummified the remains. It is well worth a visit

Yes, there are tours throughout the day, never any formal times, just present yourself at the door and ask, you might have to wait no more than 30 minutes for a tour to start. Not sure when they close.

No, we just showed up during hours they were open and paid a gentleman the fee and waited in the pretty church for a tour guide, who showed up eventually. This operation is very informal, but I imagine the fees we curious... More
