A truly fantastic very well established guiding company led by the highly experiencedand professional Russ Mills. One of life’s true Gentlemen. I’ve just returned from a Ben Nevis weekend in Scotland and it was absolutely superb. From initial booking, subsequent correspondence, final arrangements and right through to departure at Glasgow airport the entire weekend was slick and efficient. I couldn’t fault it any way. As for the hikes themselves they were absolutely incredible - Ben Nevis on the first day & 2 Monros in the Glen Nevis valley on the second - they surpassed all expectations. Transport to and from the accommodation (which was excellent also) and the added experience of an additional local guide Rich made both days simply incredible. The views and location were spectacular. This was my third time using Mountain Trails Dublin and I’m already looking forward to my next booking ! Friendly, professional, qualified and highly experienced - if your considering a booking I couldn’t recommend them enough. If you do decide to book you won’t be disappointed. 10 out of 10 every time 👍

Excellent course! I took the Intro to Mountain Skills Course 1, led by Russell; 2-3 days. We were a group of six of varying degrees of outdoor experience/navigation knowledge; the majority being novice map-readers/navigators. Russell's course includes a zoom 2 hour introduction on the night before Day 1. He provides a detailed syllabus. The information re: contour interpretation was completely new to me, and as I learned over the following two days, it is particularly critical to navigation. I would recommend *not* skipping the zoom intro; it was definitely helpful to have had some of the terms and definitions already in one's brain when they repeatedly come up in the field. The following two days started at 9am and ended at 4:30PM. It's part informational classroom in the field, and part hiking & application of exercises. He covered a broad range of information ranging from map-reading/navigation, outdoor gear, leave no trace principles and more. I was impressed by the level of detail provided for each topic. E.g. the outdoor gear session included displays of his own gear and highlighting all of the clever elements included in well-made outdoor wear. The difference between true waterproofs, and those with weaker elements was news to all of us. There were specific design elements to which we weren't even alert; one such item was a series of "ranger beads" which can be used for counting paces. And of course, he went over how to look for quality boots (never realized that the heal of a boot was important for going downhill.). He pointed out that my own boots may better suited for a wider foot. I am excited to apply what I have learned on my next outing. My most immediate take-aways: measurement! We learned three different ways to measure distance: the first being actual physical distance, the next being by time, and the last: by one's own paces. You might think you know how to count paces and could do this on your own, but there's a framework which Russell will teach you and it will take your counting to the next level(!). Contour interpretation might be my favorite lesson from this outing. It's also one of the more challenging elements for me. I am eager to be able to recognize a spur, a reentrant, a saddle, with nothing but a glance! I will work on this and get it down pat, in time for my next course. I will definitely be taking Mountain Skills II at some point in the future. Thanks Russell and to all who participated and made this outing so great!

We started the day with zero map reading knowledge. We finished the day with enough navigation skills and confidence to try a day in the hills on our own. It’s hard to think of a better way to spend a day - getting outdoors, amazing scenery, a bit of exercise and learning a new skill. And all in the great company of Russell. Highly recommended.
