Overview

Sweny's Pharmacy is featured in James Joyce's Ulysses. Today, the chemist is maintained by volunteers, celebrating Joyce's life and works with daily readings, cups of tea, Dublin gossip and not forgetting, of course, the lemon soap. Loose yourself in the second hand books and imagine yourself back in 1904 among the old pharmaceutical paraphernalia.

This was such a wonderful visit. The window displays were already great, but nothing compared to the inside – one step over the threshold and you’ll feel as though you have stepped back in time! Sweny’s is a quaint apothecary shop, featured in Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’...More

The tiny apothecary shop now staffed by volunteers who are keeping the James Joyce novels alive and well is a must see in Dublin. I came in to buy some lemony soap before going to see Ulysses and found myself in a reading of The...More

I was lucky to visit this with a group of people, including one who worked as a volunteer at Sweny's. We had just enough time to sit and do a read-around of a short story from the Dubliners, and it was totally magic. Favorite afternoon...More

Visit to see an historic pharmacy now a James Joyce museum. Buy some lemon soap, now a favorite of mine. Staffed by volunteers, if you are lucky you may catch a live rendition of a tune in Gaelic. Free admission.

Sweny's is a place where a five minute visit can turn into a one hour long reading of Ulysses, a place where a commentary about your country of origin can turn into a recomforting conversation on the beauty of discovering new places (all accompanied by...More

We walked into another world here. We received so much knowledge and felt so incredibly welcome. The owner/manager played the guitar and sang us an Irish song and spoke to us like we were long lost relatives. This place is cool if you're looking to...More

It was by accident that we wandered by Sweny’s across from Kennedy’s Pub. This serendipity lead us to what may have been the highlight of our trip. Sweny’s is the chemist/pharmacy that plays a minor role in Joyce’s Ulysses, and several years ago, when the...More
