Beautiful Serene Lake

Not a ripple on this magnificent lake while we were there. We enjoyed the walks around the lake while staying in the Lake Hotel

This is the lake at Ross Castle and in which Inishfallen Island is situated. The Lake takes its name from the objective of the monastic settlement on Inishfallen. The monks were there to teach and learn and thus the name of the Lake. There are opportunities to cruise the lake, including one that will land you on Inishfallen Island.

A constant feature in the background of our time in Kerry. Lough Leane provides a gorgeous backdrop to any tour of the area. Calm, tranquil, surrounded by mountains, this is a lake that compares strongly with those in England's lake district or the Italian lakes. You won't be able to miss it when in Killarney and it will certainly bring... More

Loch Léin is the lowest of Killarney's Lakes at sea level, hence the term "lower lake". It is most commonly known as the Lower Lake by locals. It is also the largest of the lakes, and closest to Killarney town, easily assessed from Ross Road or the National Park. It is home to Ross Castle, Killarney's most famous landmark. Several... More

I was able to hire taxis to take me out to remote areas to see the beautiful vistas of Lough Leane. I was told by one driver it means lake of knowledge. It's the largest and lowest of three lakes. I've seen it now from the vantage points of Muckross, Ladies View, Ross Castle and Aghadoe. Each vantage point is... More

Definitly take a small boat ride to St. Finian's abbey on and island in Lake Leane. Avoid the large tour boat. The islands in the lake are beautiful. Very scenic. Also you can take great photos of Ross Castle from the lake

Make sure you stop somewhere along the N71 driving through Killarney National Park to enjoy time by this beautiful lake. Peaceful and serene.

One of our favourite destinations in Ireland. Walk around the lake or take a glass top boat cruise around it or take a rowing boat out to inishfallen island to visit the ruins of Ireland's oldest university .
