It was lashing with rain when I visited Kilkenny and Rothe House was a welcome sanctuary from the rain outside. The house itself was interesting enough but the gardens at the back were the highlight for me. Even though it was still bucketing down, I...More

By chance we managed to visit this little gem in the heart of Kilkenny. It's a self-tour, but I think that adds to the appeal. The restored gardens at the rear of the three houses is simply gorgeous. I'd highly recommend a visit - it's...More

This was recommended to us by our bartender, it was a great place to visit, lots of history and interesting facts. Well preserved.

This old dweliing is in the middle of Kilkenny town. We were greeted by friendly custodians and the entry fee was modest. The oak bones of the building were restored in recent times but it is left pretty bare so you can see the amazing...More

We self-toured Rothe House at the end of our first full day in Kilkenny, late in the afternoon, virtually alone and with the sun low in the sky. Beautifully restored home reflecting upper society life back in the day. Plan on one hour. We especially...More

This is an extremely interesting house or I should say houses. Walk all the way to the back of the courtyard and climb the stairs to the garden. It's lovely!

I guess I just don't appreciate museums like this but when they said there was a garden I thought that would interest me but never saw a garden just a few plants in pots. Apparently they also have a genealogy library for an extra charge

This is really a complex of three houses and gardens built for a family with twelve children. The stone exterior of the first house closest to the street is attractive and there were a few interesting furnishings. I liked the first smaller interior courtyard with...More

This is actually a series of three houses linked together, plus a simply wonderful garden. From the street, you have no sense of the size of the place. The exhibits are small, but the architecture of the structures are worth the visit. The structure of...More

Allow 1-2 hours, that should be sufficient, but if you are on a whirlwind tour like a lot of Americans who come here, see the castle first, enjoy the touristy shopping mall opposite the castle, the high street and the... More
