We found this place by accident as we were late for a different tour in a different place in Kilkenny. A tribute to local enterprise, this facility has been extensively renovated in recent years and enables the visitor get an interesting aspect on the history of Kilkenny over the last 200 years.

Definitely worth a look if you are in Kilkenny. We really enjoyed walking around and reading about its history. The garden is fantastic too.

Self guided tour, beautiful traditional house, the real thing, complete with a full history and beautiful gardens to the rear. The owner was rich and played a major part in the town. As a place of meetings and political views contained within these walls. When you walk the mile, don't miss this opportunity to see the past. . .

There are a great number of artifacts that are demonstrated in this house to try and show what life was like. The owner was a wealthy merchant and local politician, well respected by the townspeople. The size is overwhelming for a private residence but interesting in its simplicity. What we marvelled at was the precision of the construction with very... More

This is part of the "Medieval Mile" walk, and we'll worth the small admission fee (I think it was 4 euros) for a self-guided tour. The houses are neat, and have good history), and the courtyards are beautiful, but the garden is AMAZING. I want to live there, garden there, work there, just BE there!

We visited Rothe House and found it a very interesting experience but we felt that there was so much more that could have been done to improve and add to this experience. There has been a great effort to present the historical information to visitors but it needs serious updating to appeal to modern visitors. There could be updated computer... More

We found the Rothe House fun to explore. This is Ireland’s only surviving 17th century merchant’s house.

We weren't aware of or planning on visiting Rothe House but as we had a while to wait for our tour of the Smithwicks Experience so we crossed the road and gave it a go. The three houses are beautifully maintained and restored and we were amazed at the before and after pictures of the gardens its hard to believe... More

An interesting structure of 3 interconnected houses, each built behind one another with intervening courtyards, presumably as the family expanded. The stone buildings themselves are lovely and things like the well and the garden give you a sense of how a family might have catered for themselves. Sadly it was raining heavily on the day we visited so we weren't... More
