It's almost hard to believe a pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick actually starts here and traverses more than 20 miles. The renovated church is really beautiful as are the grounds/cemetery. The activity center connected to the church provides a good deal of informational materials on the...More

Off the beaten track, it's well worth finding this Abbey. Still in use as a place of worship with the original ruins still attached. Peaceful and beautiful. Lovely also walking around the outside and admiring the grounds too. There is much history here.

The beautiful grounds are a striking backdrop to the exquisite and restored Abbey. It is truly a real masterpiece dating as far back as the early 1200's. If you enjoy Irish history, then this will definitely wet your appetite for more. Dress warm, as the...More

The history is palpable, St Patrick baptizing people here back in 441 AD. The abbey itself has been here since 1216 AD. There are old photos hung inside the church documenting the destructed roof and all fixtures before restoration. It is really a miracle that...More

Founded in 1216 by Cathal Crovderg O’Connor, King of Connaught, mass has been offered without a break for over 800 years; the roofless abbey has continued to be used even through the dreadful penal times, despite being roofless for a number of centuries. However, the...More

We stopped here after dinner so it was fairly late in the evening. There was a service being held so we spent most of our time in the grounds. It is well worth the time to wander the grounds and we were able to take...More

We wanted to go and visit places of historical interest and this surely fits the bill as there is an amazing history to be found here so full of anecdotal stories and 802 years of Mass being said without ever being halted even though Cromwell...More
